If you really want to be impressed, consider that this was 1991 so there was no such thing as Auto-Tune. Yet, they were good enough to keep hitting the notes in front of 1.6 million people, in a nation that had been openly hostile towards the U.S., and surrounded by the USSR military. Not the most comfortable place to play a concert. That song's album hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 for 4 weeks and has gone 16 times Platinum.

@sharis9095 Жыл бұрын
The helicopters were actually using their downdraft to circulate air. And keep the crowd calm. This was a festival over 2 days but the biggest crowd was there for Metallica. The other interesting thing is this is the 1st open air concert after the fall of the Soviet Union... prior to this you could only hear Metallica on bootleg tapes. But everyone there knew them They don't really know how many people...they stopped counting after 500,000 and estimated 1.6 million but there are estimates for this point of the concert as high as 2.5 million. At the time I wanted to be there... now I wonder where the washrooms are.

They were under communist rule for decades and this was the first rock festival allowed in the previously Communist Russia. It was basically free because the crowds couldn't be controlled. The previously USSR soldiers joined in with the crowd because they had no control because of the sheer number of people. Dozens of people died in the crowd and it was utter chaos. Many of the soldiers were likely happy that communism fell as well. All rock music was banned in russia before this concert.

That moment, when Matallica realized, that if you had only one chance, one concert and one moment in life to prove a point and now was that time, show them what you're made of and don't hold back. This was that concert. that fact that over 30 years later that the question could be asked, was the music that good or that much better then than now is not up for debate. To be fair I don't think they would ever let the crowds get this big again given covid and such. Mascow had to be shitting their pants allowing them to play there.
