If you really want to be impressed, consider that this was 1991 so there was no such thing as Auto-Tune. Yet, they were good enough to keep hitting the notes in front of 1.6 million people, in a nation that had been openly hostile towards the U.S., and surrounded by the USSR military. Not the most comfortable place to play a concert. That song's album hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 for 4 weeks and has gone 16 times Platinum.

My man Wayne was 100% right! The choppers were fanning the crowd! There were so many hot sweaty bodies in that small are, it created its own microclimate of evaporated mist over the crowd. I've been in large metal show crowds. You sweat so much you don't even urinate. But if you have to go, you go right there. And rumors are there are still people there trying to get out of the parking lot. ;-)

The helicopters were actually using their downdraft to circulate air. And keep the crowd calm. This was a festival over 2 days but the biggest crowd was there for Metallica. The other interesting thing is this is the 1st open air concert after the fall of the Soviet Union... prior to this you could only hear Metallica on bootleg tapes. But everyone there knew them They don't really know how many people...they stopped counting after 500,000 and estimated 1.6 million but there are estimates for this point of the concert as high as 2.5 million. At the time I wanted to be there... now I wonder where the washrooms are.

Wayne was actually correct when for real said the helicopter was the fan blowing air down on the crowd. They were under communist rule for decades and this was the first rock festival allowed in the previously Communist Russia. It was basically free because the crowds couldn't be controlled. The previously USSR soldiers joined in with the crowd because they had no control because of the sheer number of people. Dozens of people died in the crowd and it was utter chaos. Many of the soldiers were likely happy that communism fell as well. All rock music was banned in russia before this concert.
