1.6 million people, 53 people died, the “security” was the army. The crowd was the horizon. That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow, Tushino airfield. 1,6 million people saw Metallica, AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera. That was a legendary MoR. The entrance was free.

In the aftermath of a failed coup, Russia's prez invited AC/DC to play a free show in a Moscow airfield in Sept. 1991... Metallica, The Black Crowes, and Pantera were the opening bands... 1.6 million Russians showed up to see all 4 bands play Russia for the 1st time. Metallica were riding high on a #1 self-titled album (aka the 'black' album) all over the world... so they were in top form. Unfortunately, Russian military were on hand for security, and violence broke out during their set... It was out of control, but Metallica were powerless to stop it. By the end of their set, a number of people had been beaten to death... reportedly over 100 rapes... It was a shocking reality check for the band.

Some context here... this was 1991. The Soviet Union had just fallen... only four years earlier was the famous President Reagan "Mr. Gorbachev... tear down this wall" speech in Berlin. The Soviet Union went from a totalitarian ruled closed society to becoming somewhat free and open to the West - basically overnight. Even under that oppressive regime little bits of Americana leaked past the Iron Curtain... and that included Metallica. Metallica and the style of music they play was HATED and feared by the ruling class in the Soviet Union as it represented everything the ruling class tried to suppress. This concert was a generational level epic event. I was an intelligence analyst in the US Navy from 1985-1991 and I remember when this happened... it was unbelievable. Only thing I could compare it to in today's world would be if North Korea suddenly opened their borders and the real world poured in. And even that would be small compared to when the Eastern Block collapsed and the West flooded their cultures. There was no internet... no digital media... no 1000 channels of cable or satellite TV back then. Just a few pirate analog radio stations beaming Western music and culture past the Iron Curtain. That makes the scale of this event that much more impressive...

This was a concert headlined by AC/DC, NOT Metallica. Metallica was the opening band after a full day of live music. Many Metallica sites, videos, etc... claim that 1.6 million fans came to see them. FALSE. It is called Monsters of Rock and tours the world.

Metallica’s intro is the very theme from the good the bad and ugly. They come out to it at every concert to this day

We all came to see someone different than Metalica. Metalica just came on stage after we were all riled up already.

Some concerts go down in history and the 1991 'Monsters of Rock' festival in Moscow was no exception. Known as one of the biggest concerts to ever take place, with a huge 1.6 million attendees, it marked the most momentous of performances for the heavy metal band Metallica. OTHER PERFORMERS TOO!!!

Listening to Metallica on the Alpine back in the day took the music to a different level.

Ask any metalhead...we all have 1 rule: If someone falls down, you pick them up. We don't stomp on people! It applies to all concerts no matter who's playing or the location.

I was there, i was 20 years old. Never heard that someone died there. There were fights with police and army guys, `cause they never been trained to interact with such big crowd, were frightened and nervous and started to beat everyone with rubber sticks. But there was a lot of drunken people and when the gig was finished, it looked like a battlefield, because of bodies, laying on the ground.

The concert occurred just months before the Soviet Union quietly faded away into the dustbin of history. But at that point, the Powers That Were had already greatly eased up on their attempt to control and micro-manage the entire society. That's why the concert was not only allowed, but supported by the authorities: They were hoping against hope that being substantially less authoritarian might save the regime. I think it was obvious from the faces and behaviors of even the regime's soldiers that that wasn't going to be enough.

My wife’s family areUkrainian andstilllivethere. My father in law told me during the Soviet Union, he and his friends would hide in the apartment complex basement listening to AC/DC in secret because you would be arrested and jailed for listening to Western Music. Even jeans were illegal. His friend spent 14 years in prison for selling a pair of jeans to an undercover policeman. He was charged with treason.

You see this amazing crowd and think this has to be the biggest concert ever with 1.6 million people but no, not even close believe it or not the Rod Stewart free concert at Copacabana Beach (1994) had 3.5 Million people.
