1.6 million people, 53 people died, the “security” was the army. The crowd was the horizon. That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow, Tushino airfield. 1,6 million people saw Metallica, AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera. That was a legendary MoR. The entrance was free.

In the aftermath of a failed coup, Russia's prez invited AC/DC to play a free show in a Moscow airfield in Sept. 1991... Metallica, The Black Crowes, and Pantera were the opening bands... 1.6 million Russians showed up to see all 4 bands play Russia for the 1st time. Metallica were riding high on a #1 self-titled album (aka the 'black' album) all over the world... so they were in top form. Unfortunately, Russian military were on hand for security, and violence broke out during their set... It was out of control, but Metallica were powerless to stop it. By the end of their set, a number of people had been beaten to death... reportedly over 100 rapes... It was a shocking reality check for the band.

Just to let you two know, this concert was THE LARGEST AUDIENCE METALLICA EVER PLAYED IN FRONT OF; 1.6 MILLION (LET THAT WORD SINK IN A BIT) PEOPLE!! IT WAS HELD AT TUSHINO AIRFIELD- AN AIR FORCE BASE. The largest recorded attendance for a concert was in 1997, by an altogether different band. The number in attendance was 7 million people. But, in the same country, Russia 🇷🇺!! If you want to know the name of the band, just tell me and, I'll be glad to get that information for you two. Peace!!

Metallica is the best metal band ever 🤘🤘🤘 Saw them first about 1985 and again and again over the years. This guys are awesome ! They are pure energy 🤘 Now I am almost 60 and still a metal head 🤘🤘🤘 My youngest granddaughter watched Metallica Videos with me and she said - granny, don't worry, if you are 70 or 80 I will build a black wheel chair for you and integrated huge speakers so it doesn't matter if you don't hear well anymore" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love this girl so much 💝🤘❣️🤘💝

I saw Metallica on the Enter Sandman Tour. Fantastic concert! What I loved about music of the 70s, 80s and some of the 90s was the music sounded even BETTER in concert. It was their voice as the played music, rocking their asses off🤣

in front of one and a half million people. understanding the significance of such an important concert is not a trivial matter in the face of an incredible event, which few times in the history of music has occurred with numbers of this type and above all also considering the socio-cultural context in which the concert was made in full post Soviet era, incredible !!!! Love it forever an EPIC event

I was there, i was 20 years old. Never heard that someone died there. There were fights with police and army guys, `cause they never been trained to interact with such big crowd, were frightened and nervous and started to beat everyone with rubber sticks. But there was a lot of drunken people and when the gig was finished, it looked like a battlefield, because of bodies, laying on the ground.

The concert occurred just months before the Soviet Union quietly faded away into the dustbin of history. But at that point, the Powers That Were had already greatly eased up on their attempt to control and micro-manage the entire society. That's why the concert was not only allowed, but supported by the authorities: They were hoping against hope that being substantially less authoritarian might save the regime. I think it was obvious from the faces and behaviors of even the regime's soldiers that that wasn't going to be enough.

This was in 1991. Two years earlier, the USSR traded a portion of it's naval ships to Pepsi to get the rights to the soda extended. At that time, Pepsi became the sixth largest naval power in the world. At the end of this year (1991), the USSR (Soviet Union) collapsed.

Some context here... this was 1991. The Soviet Union had just fallen... only four years earlier was the famous President Reagan "Mr. Gorbachev... tear down this wall" speech in Berlin. The Soviet Union went from a totalitarian ruled closed society to becoming somewhat free and open to the West - basically overnight. Even under that oppressive regime little bits of Americana leaked past the Iron Curtain... and that included Metallica. Metallica and the style of music they play was HATED and feared by the ruling class in the Soviet Union as it represented everything the ruling class tried to suppress. This concert was a generational level epic event. I was an intelligence analyst in the US Navy from 1985-1991 and I remember when this happened... it was unbelievable. Only thing I could compare it to in today's world would be if North Korea suddenly opened their borders and the real world poured in. And even that would be small compared to when the Eastern Block collapsed and the West flooded their cultures. There was no internet... no digital media... no 1000 channels of cable or satellite TV back then. Just a few pirate analog radio stations beaming Western music and culture past the Iron Curtain. That makes the scale of this event that much more impressive...

Thinking about the era and current events during this time, this was in USSR that was collapsing. The USSR military was supposed to be security, but most of them took off their uniforms and just joined the crowd. This concert was the first time these Russians had experienced this and it was just pure freedom and joy for them. And extraordinary and important time in history.

Was at an airfield in Russia, estimated to be around 1.5m people attending the concert (i believe it was 3 days). It was also one of the first time that the people of what was known as the USSR were able to hear western society music. The helicopters were used as fans so people don't pass out.

Imagine living your entire life with never being allowed to have an emotional release that cleanses your soul. Then you do. This was as the Soviet Union was falling apart and simple freedoms were being allowed for the time.

@Life with Recklezz In case your wondering, the name of the music that your hearing before Metallica appear on stage is called *"The Ecstasy of Gold"* by Ennio Morricone. You are also correct about that piece of music appearing in a movie, it was called *"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"* staring Clint Eastwood. Metallica usually has that piece of music playing before they appear on stage.
