That sounded quite silly to me as well. I'm not sure of his exact history, but my father had done a lot of time in prison. He had that same mindset where he didn't mind doing time because it became normal to him. My father would say that scared people get taken to jail/prison. If you aren't scared/can fight, you go to jail/prison standing tall. My father had a certain amount of respect from the local Police because he understood they were just doing their job. He was the type to not put up a fight while being cuffed, and be rather comical because he could do the time. Being on parole was "running away from home" to my father.
