NY put too much hope on Bobby Shmurda failing to realize his music is shmediocre. dude was a flash in the pan and the time for him to pop off is past. he ain't that guy for NY hip hop no matter how much of a real one he is. The stuff he's released since getting out is ok-ish but nothing hot that's gonna blow up the scene, shit's changed way too much since he went away

Andre 3000 is really the goat of all the southern artists. What a legend he stood in front of a mean crowd of new Yorkers in 95 during east coast west coast beef and he told them niggas then the south got something to say. That type of attitude and rebellion is exactly what hip hop is to it's core. The south took over with hard work and talent. Facts.

Pop Smoke was gonna take NY to a different level man. It’s been said so many times but he really was a new incarnation of 50. The way he moved and everything. Only difference is, Fif had a grip on the streets so they knew what time it was, he had a small army behind him, Pop unfortunately got caught slipping. It really would’ve been something to see him take over the culture same way Fif did.

After 50 was shot he was blackballed and couldn’t even get a record deal in New York. He was signed to Interscope which is a west coast label, Dr. Dre from California and Eminem from Detroit. The music industry side of New York barely fucked with 50. Unlike other artists 50 could not represent unity and brotherhood due to real street issues and the threats on his life. Everyone who did not fuck with him was already winning so he had to divide and conquer. The problem is that New York did not groom their artist and looked everywhere else for talent rather their own backyard. The south took over music then the internet came and now everyone sounds the fucking same. 50 cent is definitely one of the last authentic superstars that represented New York hip hop but he is not the reason for its decline.

Having lived in both the northeast and the south I can definitely say how NY treats their artists is totally different than the south. Because NY considers itself the birthplace of hip-hop they are always concerned with who is the best NY artist which encourages beef but whenever a new artist comes along in the south entire cities and regions get behind those artists to push them out to a national audience. The vibe is just totally different.
@175dee9

It’s the other way around, there’s more beef in the south fam. In Louisiana it’s a miracle if you make it as a rapper and in Texas it’s hard to make it mainstream because Texas ain’t a industry state and they only have one city and its Houston and they not even top 5. And for the other states like Mississippi, they don’t got no rappers. The only state in the south that I can say you right about is Florida. I been in both too, grew up in queens and Bronx and moved to Dallas more than 10 years having visited Louisiana for family. You got it the other way around shorty

50 was the apex of NY gangsta rap, right man right place right time. Just as hip hop was at its commercial zenith, 50 had the look, the back story, the undeniable talent, the ferocity, the fearlessness, the backing, the entrepreneurial spirit and the business brains which enabled him to package and promote his product as perfect pop music for the time. His music was played globally by everybody everywhere from all walks of life in a frenzy of hype not seen really since MJ. Sure others had been big stars but 50 was something else. A genuine cultural icon. He was both a credible artist and a comic book character for kids. He made a major and credible Hollywood movie and released computer games, clothing lines etc etc . He was a phenomenon. He milked his product for all it was worth just before the music industry imploded and project budgets would have to streamline, of course because of the internet, streaming and social media becoming the global medium. He learnt from the past entertainers and played his hand beautifully. How does a rapper top that ?!

New York is either too interested in Fashion or rappers usually tend to get mixed up in gangs and tragically end up getting shot. For instance, NY literally had ASAP Rocky and if he really wanted to he could be running NY with no problem he has the fanbase and the skills but instead he focuses on fashion too much. Same could be said about Joey Badass who decided to get into acting instead of releasing more music (In his case he is very underrated still). Lets also not forget that most of the NY rappers tend to not unify and always beef with each other more frequent than others in different coasts

Boom Bap Hip Hop ain't dead son ! We can clearly see hardcore Rap artist like Apathy, Vinnie Paz, Run The Jewels, Krumbsnatcha, Blaq Poet, & many others still dropping albums & doing very well. What's going on is the mainstream & popular rap is moved to the forefront over the Boom Bap Rap. The corporations found a way to pimp & profit on popular rap....so in a nutshell us that's staying true to hip hop is now playing the backseat while plastic rappers gets to drive the whip to sort of speak. Also what slowed NY Hip Hop down was NY, (you can ask anybody this), NY only supported its own artist. Other east coast cities like Newark, NJ, Philly, Baltimore, & VA had to be the best out there cities just to get support from NY back in the day....We really can't be mad @ the South & the Mid West for going hard & claim a spot in hip hop by supporting there own artist as well as other region artist......💯👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I blame the “This is real hiphop” boom bap rappers and fans. Out of pride from the birth place of hiphop. New York attempt to take back the crown. Instead of being humbled that hiphop is growing they hated anything that wasn’t New York. Completely forgetting why hiphop was so fun. They created a lyrical niche genre only east coast can love. Early New York hiphop had simple lyrics and they forgot that. This also affected the west coast because the west felt they had to prove them selves lyrically and west coast music started to sound boom bap as well. Meanwhile the south didn’t care about lyrics and produce music that appeased to both good beats and decent lyrics. It wasn’t until the age of the internet where music started to blend. Chief keef from Chicago sounding like he’s from the south. Kendrick sounds like he’s from east coast but he’s LA.

Even 50 hasnt made a hit record since Scott Storch and Dre stopped carrying him, like most rap fad chasers there styles are forgotten and replaced by other underwhelming rappers who will be forgotten as soon as there ten seconds dry up. Maybe it's because the mixtape culture (and now social media) is where all the action is, but I came from a place (Bay Area) where stations were running independent hip hop around the clock. Pop Smoke evolved drill though, I do not put Pop Smoke in the same boat as any other NY or UK drill rapper. Go back and check 2018 drill, Pop used adlibs and did things differently, him and Fivio evolved the sound. Then, looking further, Just look what the producers did on shoot for the stars, nobody infused trap/drill like that, Pop was 1 of 1 for sure, and was the future of NYC. Everyone was Jacking the drill wave and claiming it was 'up next', not trying to be that dude who was like; 'I been saying', but I knew once pop died all of these dudes were way too generic to carry on the torch. When CJ popped off and I heard Whoopty, my first thought was; 'Its not awful but its generic', and then he turned around and never produced a hard hit again. People spent all of 2020 debating who was 'next up' and then the scene died. Pop put NYC on the map again, and gave it its respect back after what Takashi did (even though in his prime, he was on fire), and for that, he's the most recent king of NY in the past decade, and that's real.

New York never had a great class of rappers after da 90's and early 2000's nyc rappers. Papoose is the best nyc rapper to come out 2005 and after. He never reached his full potential. In my opinion they don't have a halfway decent rapper draft class 2005 to present day. Plus only a few you could consider a lyricist and Nyc followed trends too much trying to sound like the south and other regions.

*A Ranking of the 4 Major Regions in the Rap Game From the Strongest Region to the Weakest:* -*#1 the South* : No region does it better, the most creative of the 4 major regions. No region is more diverse in terms of sounds and styles than the South, no region has created more Rap subgenres than the South and no region has had a longer reign than the South. -*#2 the East Coast* : This region has always found a way to stay relevant, even at times when they aren't the top region. -*#3 the West Coast* : The West has a noticeable lack of technically proficient rappers compared to the other regions which is a knock against that region from the perspective of stylistic diversity. They also tend to go through periodic droughts where they only have one or two rappers. -*#4 the Midwest* : The weakest of the major regions, the only region that has never had a reign. There's never been an era when the charts were dominated by Midwest artist or by a Midwest sound. The Midwest is also the only region that has never developed any identifiable sounds that represent their region which is a major blow from a production standpoint(The South has Crunk, Trap etc.; the East Coast has Break Beat, Boom-bap etc.; the West Coast has G Funk, Gangster etc.).

50 let his situation with ja rule lead him to believe he was superman because he started going at rappers who he was over commercially but lyrically not even close being in the same weight class (Nas & Jadakiss). He also couldn't keep up the commercial momentum after 2005 which can clearly be seen in the lack of quality music. During the Rick Ross (Ja Rule #2) situation he saw his run was over.

New York is to Hip Hop, what Hollywood is to the movie industry. It’s the Mecca of hip hop. Other places get their moment in the sun from time to time, but it always comes back around to New York. It’s impossible to overstate how huge the scene is there. There are tons of MC’s in New York who are virtually anonymous outside of New York, but they’re getting over huge in the underground there, blowing up shows and on the mixtape scene.

In all honesty, I don’t think the change of sound in Hip Hop is directly related with New York “falling off” as they say. It’s just that a new sound was developed since the mid 90s in the south and it became the wave. IMO it’s because not only is something new but also people can relate more to that sound. Plus the fact that it’s something that can be transformed into Pop music easily. It’s more of a melodic sound and that makes it easier to be shaped. Personally I think that even with NY’s Hip Hop scene being on the top of the game, this change would have happened anyway. Plus I don’t believe 1 or 2 radios have the power to influence that many people in the times of the internet even in the early 2000s.

I don't think New York will get their title from the 90's back. The south ain't letting that shit go. Not only was the south's rise to fame based all off of working to get it and running into the spotlight after Tupac and Biggie were out, the south was unified in a way New York, not even LA ever saw. The south is a connection of Atlanta, Memphis, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, it's too big and too unified to give it up.

Kanye beating 50 Cent in the albums race ushered in a new era of hip hop. People wanted something different. Kanye's style and approach created a demand for more creative and adventurous sounds. Something that strayed away from the tropes of Gangster Rap; something more vulnerable and relatable. Hip Hop simply evolved past its gritty street roots, as the genre became more palatable and branched out into other demographics like Suburban America. But NY just did not adapt are started lagging behind. NY was too attached to its rough and rugged identity. Still to this day, NYers still see their city as a cold and rugged place and it is. So really, it was just a matter of time that NY lost its relevance in hip hop. No one can stay at the top forever. Gangster rap/Street rap has made a comeback of sorts but, still a lot of the relevant acts are hailing from the south. Atlanta rose to the occasion and offered a new sound that was fresh and is still dominating the airwaves today.
