This is why I always recommend buying from Romani, Indigenous and other ethnic designers instead of a misappropriated mismatch of different cultures that doesn’t even match what the “hippie” lifestyle is supposed to stand for in the first place. And for all the “wear what you want” people, fine, but don’t claim that you care about marginalized people and are anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and all the other things hippies claim to be, it’s important to hold yourself up to your own standards.

🎀I brought clothes like this from a lady in the market many years ago to wear to my dance lessons. I practiced belly dancing, It never occurred to me that she might be Roma. I just thought that she was a lady with darker features, like her hair was quite dark, almost black and her features were different from some of the white Europeans around me but I always assumed she was European. We went there at least twice a month my family and I and my Grandmother always brought things from her.🎀

Hey, as someone who is Irish, whose people have been murdered, discriminated against, and enslaved, if you are not Irish but want to adorn yourself with Celtic attire, go ahead. I would be honoured for people to love my culture rather than fear it. Even if you don’t know what you’re wearing, no problem. It still makes me happy to see that my culture lives on in any way, shape or form.

I want to add some more info if it's ok- I studied fashion history. Originally in the 60s and 70s this movement wasnt called hippy, hippy was something people used to say to mock them and was almost a slur. They were also called "freaks". They were not a fashion movement at all, they were people who travelled around many countries and used to find things on their travels, obviously it wasnt possibly to carry a suitcase when travelling mostly around the world in van, hitchhiking etc so they would wear it. They would travel either from Western Europe to India and north africa, or USA to south america. At the time it wasnt usually plane travel like we do now, so they would exchange things from home with local people. After some of them began returning home, an aesthetic was born. At home, they were heavily involved in politics especially civil rights movements (in the UK these guys protested the forced housing of travellers and romani community, they were aware of oppressive govt action and tried to help, some went to jail). Long story short- original hippies obtained their look by just travelling and swapping their western stuff with locals, later on it became a "fashion statement" and people just bought random stuff that looked foreign and wore it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess the original hippies are all in their late 70s 80s now! And those guys were really counter culture as opposed to people who do it for fashion.. store bought fashion can never truly be anti capitalist. And thats where the appropriating comes in. The current fashion like the kids in the photo you shared probably have no idea of the history of where their clothes come from, and how anti-hippy it is to buy them from a store. Im just guessing but I imagine the closest thing to a hippy nowadays would be the kind of person who doesnt travel on planes because of global warming and protests about fast fashion garment factory conditions, not ones who wear the stuff. Its a shame how good things end up sometimes, and its great that you make these videos that hopefully change peoples minds before the next time they go shopping for party clothes.

What's interesting. I juggle and recently interacted more with other jugglers and artists (like hoop artists or body contortion and so on). This way of style is very common in the community, together with walking barfoot, a very left mindset, a tendency for marihuana and oftentimes dread locks even if one isn't black. All I've talked to so far are very openminded and easygoing. Many also like to wander around, having been part of various shows and simply juggling on the streets etc. I really would like to know what you think about all this! Since they don't buy their clothes to be cool but really as a way to express themselves and because the clothes are associated with peace, individuality and artisty. Many probably bought from different places of the world. They seem to hold the example of the first hippies quite well it seems to me

Hippie counterculture was a movement in its own right, with its own ideas and philosophies. Yes, they got inspired from different ethnic dresses, but they weren't cosplaying Romani people or claiming they were Romani, so I don't see the appropriation and how this is offensive. It's great to educate people in telling them that the "free-willed gypsy" image is a stereotype that has nothing to do with Romani culture (which is nowhere as "free" as some people think, in fact they are extremely conservative, much more so than hippies), but telling people how to dress or not to dress and shouting "cultural appropriation" at everything isn't helping.

I think it's important to remember that 1. Florian is an actual rom , he has the right to call put what he sees inappropriate when his culture is involved. 2. Similar to p much every whitewashing/cultural appropriation instance, the culture was used and made to serve the bourgeoisie. It was repackaged to be "bohemian", effectively erasing the culture that it stemmed from. 3. They want the visuals yet the people whom the visuals belong to are still marked as "undesirables", dirty, poor, immoral, over sexualised etc... 4. Florian isnt saying never wear anything similar to this, but call it what it is. And also if you want to have the "bohemian" look, you can, just support Romani creators / fashion designersbwhen you do it ♡♡♡

And as someone fascinated by the United States counterculture movements, they’ve often been ridden with appropriated fashions, as well as appreciated ones, but the hippies in particular are so strange. There are so many fashions attributed to “hippies” that in reality either belong to an ethnic minority group or originated in an entirely separate counterculture (beatniks, for instance). Tbh I think the most definitive “hippie” fashion is just being naked, as one of their defining tenants is the “free love” movement. I love your videos, and it always warms the heart to finally see credit where it’s due.

@icantthinkofaname1677Not really- many white boomers who formerly or currently identify as hippies just like to paint themselves as such. My father in law is a civil rights historian and was a kid during that time, and he says that while there was a fair amount of overlap in the hippie, Vietnam protest and Civil Rights movements, ultimately they have separate “origin stories”. The Civil Rights movements has deep roots older than America itself. The first wave of enslaved Africans arguably were the grandparents of the 1960s civil rights movements because they set the first layer of organized resistance against racialized oppression that their descendants built on for generations. There have also always been the occasional white abolitionist or resistance fighter allied to those movements, but hippies aren’t really descended from them literally or ideologically. The truth is that the Vietnam war and feminist movement were bigger factors in crystallizing the hippie ethos of “equality and peace” amongst the majority of white Americans. Young people in general were already feeling oppressed by how their parents- who survived WW2- raised them. It was a very conventional way of raising kids, and standing out was stifled. Then the Vietnam War emerged, and young men didn’t want to die or kill in Vietnam for no good reason. And with the advent of better education for women, birth control, and decent wages the women didn’t want to be stepford wives trapped in oppressive gender roles like their mothers in the 50s. The hippie movement obviously overlapped a lot with the Civil Rights one, but in general white hippies didn’t care as much about black oppression as they did about their own. It wasn’t the root of why they were hippies. But many were happy to paint themselves as advocates for racial Justice all the same.

All races appropriate from lots of different cultures. Instead of it being 'appropriating' it should be appreciating, shared and celebrated. Everyone does it, from clothing, decor, food, music, religion, etc. Live and let live and love, long as nobody causes any harm. I'm an American Romanichel raised in the south. That doesn't mean I need to wear stereotypical southern attire or decorate my home with roosters and live off of soupbeans and cornbread. If a stranger walked into my home and all the pics were covered, they wouldn't have a clue what race or culture I come from. I love all kinds of different things from different countries, cultures, religions and so on ❤️ We shouldn't be so divided.

For sharing education purposes: The term "hippy" came to be in the USA around the time that the opiate problem was breaking out, in the 60s and 70s. I confess that this kinda how I describe my fashion sense, eclectic, flowy, florals and patches, scarves, layers, loose jewelry, stuff like that. And I know it's origin as appropriation (though didn't know bohemianism was specifically a romanticism and appropriation of Romani culture and little to do with the region of Bohemia)...but it's hard when it genuinely is a beautiful fashion (and super comfortable and easy for me to deal with with my sensory issues) and no one should be looked down upon for dressing in their traditional style. I try to buy as much from thrift stores as I can to avoid giving money to people appropriating cultures who are already discriminated against (I'd happily buy from actual people of those cultures but most of them tend to be expensive, which is completely understandable! They need to make back the investment of time and money and be able to support themselvesl!! But as someone living at the poverty line it makes it hard)

I totally get that, there's a lot of styles I really love, but don't want to appropriate. Things I grew up doing and had to learn to stop. Things that I had to learn more respectful versions of. It's all good as long as you're being mindful and trying to be better, and not continuing harmful stereotypes. Like, there were a lot of hippies who started wearing afros "in solidarity" while doing activism. Who then cut their hair to look like "respectable adults" when they were ready to move on and get those paychecks. So for years after, black people wearing afros was 100% associated with criminal behaviour. Same way dreadlocks have come to be associated with dirtiness. Because dirty white people act dirty while wearing it, then cut them off when they want to change styles and be accepted by conservative society. Black people literally can't even let our hair grow out of our heads because a bunch of people appropriated our hairstyles and associated them with counter-culture behaviour. Like what is the "Mohawk" hairstyle associated with? Traditional First Nations ceremonies? Nah. White kids with spiked collars and electric guitars. But no one asked them to stop wearing their hair shaved at the sides, they just call it a cockscomb or rooster comb hair now. Because punks are actually more caring and empathetic than most groups when it comes to actually being supportive. Just saying. I love the aesthetic, and he doesn't say not to wear it, but to be mindful and learn our history before accidentally repeating the harm caused by others doing the dame things in the past.

I think one thing that doesn't get talked about enough is that using the iconography of a marginalised group as fashion shorthand for "countercultural/nonconformist/wild-and-free" often contributes to that marginalisation. A good example of this being dreads. A lot of the time (though not all), white people wear dreads to signify that they are 'street' 'gangsta' or otherwise 'outside the system,' which are meanings that have been put upon dreads by white society. These imposed meanings are the reasons that black people are expected to abandon the most practical hairstyles to look 'professional' at work (i.e. not look 'street' or 'gangsta'). In the same way, I'd imagine its association with hippies and other counterculture movements contributes to the kind of profiling that Romani traditional garb attracts.

Dreads form naturally on white people their hair as well. We don’t own dreads. I think it’s important to remember who is doing the marginalizing/oppressing, bc in my experience the type of white people wearing dreads aren’t the same people who are doing this, and while yes I agree they don’t help stereotypes as they are often unclean, it’s not their fault that white society has tried to punish us for wearing our natural hair, and they themselves tend to be accepting people. I think coopting and esp cheapening aesthetics is a wrong thing to do, but I don’t think hair is something any culture or group can claim, esp a hairstyle that forms naturally in many different types of hair

@@tomseppe6406 I think at the heart of it is the power dynamic. Whether they're creating that marginalisation or using the iconography of that marginalisation to signify non-conformity, the dominant group (in this case, white people) are creating meaning out of those people and signifiers associated with them, rather than deriving those people themselves. Ultimately if we get rid of that power dynamic, the harm of this imposed meanings goes away (though that's easier said than done).

The appropriation comes from not giving credit and big corporations rebranding the clothing. Then you have racists wearing clothes from a culture they are racist to. Buying from native sellers and wearing their jewerly or clothes is different from buying native "inspired" clothes from fast fashion places. Appropriation is when it's only ever ok if anyone but actual natives can partake in their culture without being discriminated against. Wearing it and knowing the history and acknowledging it is OK. But to pretend that it's not a big deal and "who cares" is just saying "hey this doesn't affect me negatively, so it must not be a real issue". It's like wearing native jewerly and not giving a flying duck about native people. It's ass behavior

I feel like that phrase is incredibly insensitive to all the horrific aspects of colonialism that took place. Like for example: I can imagine someone wearing a maxi skirt matched with a head scarf to give off a fairycore, cottagecore, or even grunge aesthetic meanwhile bell sleeves can be worn to fit that 70’s or beach aesthetic. So long as you aren’t ignorantly dressing as something offensive and culturally appropriating said clothing. Nobody is saying cultures cannot be shared. Cultural appropriation is taking attributes from a specific minority culture and using it INAPPROPRIATELY. One thing that is important is knowing WHERE the origins of so "aesthetic" came from and HOW it came to be and WHO are the people effected by it. The whole argument of "cultures are meant to be shared" is just bigoted nonsense from people who just want to do negative things with no repercussions. It should be noted that with cultural appropriation, there is a certain disrespect to it. Disrespect to the people, disrespect their culture and lively hood.

And this never-ending conservative nonsense of "cultures needing to be shared" justifies entitlement and cultural genocide, outsiders have no right to speak on what other people do with their culture. One can love a culture while respecting the people of that culture, in fact a culture and it's people are intrinsically linked. Appropriation is when an aspect of a culture previously used to discriminate against and persecute a group of people is taken, stripped of it's cultural roots, and used in a purely aesthetic way- often by the same people who used it against others to begin with. It is a VERY SPECIFIC phenomenon and this is quite obviously an overlooked case of it. This does NOT mean you can't wear what you want, which was never stated in the video, but the least you can do is acknowledge the issue, educate yourself and apply that knowledge to your decisions. This is not a personal attack, the creator is simply raising awareness and bringing support to an under-priveledged community. I'm tired of people acting as if everyone is out to police their wardrobe, this issue is much bigger than that.

Policing the clothes people wear that may have been inspired by another culture is ridiculous. Every single culture is derived in some way from the cultures before it, and the cultures around it. Limiting your culture to a select group of people that you deem pure enough to partake is a good way to have your culture be lost to history. Ancient cultures still inspire fashion, design, and architecture in the modern day because they were spread across the known world and allowed to be explored and appreciated by everyone who came in contact with them. To cut that off means when the last pure blooded member of your group dies, your culture dies with them.

Seems like people loved the designs and fashion of your culture and others and made it a part of their lives. Why is that bad? Nobody gets mad when a white person loves Mexican food or Indian food Why is it bad to love a different cultures clothing. It seems like you want every group of people to look one specific way and not intermingle and share anything from their cultures. Which seems way more racist then wearing some clothing that came from a village.

Or is it the claim that people can’t wear this style of clothing without being racially profiled? If so I would like to ask how? I’m not racist and I don’t know the history or culture of these clothes well enough to make a racially motivated judgment of someone wearing these clothes so explain to me how this causes racial profiling. Because I would just assume that the person is wearing clothes that they like to wear or comfortable clothing or something along those lines. what racial profiling occurs when wearing this style? Is it the assumption that you are Romani?

it DOES, though, if you buy from people that arent part of that culture, and dont know what those cultural things have as a history or what the meaning is. example, evil eyes: a lot of people wear huge ones bought from shein or some other fast fashion store and claim they're just sooo spiritual, which, the belief is fine, but they wouldn't be wearing the evil eye correctly: the big ones so many wear on their necks are supposed to be decorative things for around your HOUSE. neck ones are small but that doesnt fit their "aesthetic". me when i disrespect people's culture to look cool for other people who probably dont care 🥰

I know where you are coming from really, but from my understanding there is way more to the story than a lot of people know. There are some of these so called 'hippies' that are actually on their spiritual journey and going to places like India and Tibet to learn more from the teachers/gurus there. Many of them have immersed themselves in the culture, history and teachings of those countries and the people that are actually living there welcome them with open arms and appreciate their appreciation of their culture. Those religions teach that we are all one and part of each other no matter what race, ethnicity or nationality we were born with. As a result, many 'hippies' are influenced by the way they dress. Perhaps clothing they have acquired from the local markets during their travels. It is so easy to judge and label one group of people (as many have done and are doing to the Romani people) as bad, but like you admitted at the beginning of the video, you don't really know many of them and their true intentions. Many genuinely just want peace and to not bother other people. This isn't the first time they have faced discrimination. People also used to break up their peaceful congregations in the past (some time in the 60s) and get brutally beaten up because the government did not understand them. Ofcourse, there are bad 'hippies' too that claim to be peaceful but there are bad apples everywhere. There are narcissists everywhere
