I feel like a great point Amala could have made was since she is half white, half black is it cultural appropriation for Amala herself to wear cornrows or is it only okay because she looks black? That could have exposed the cultural appropriation debate for what it is: racially charged prejudice based on something as superficial as skin tone.

@@stevexracer4309 you are creating a victim that is not even present in the video. No one degraded Amala for being biracial. It is not at all that she’s not “black enough”. It’s simply that you can’t claim one side and reject the other. How can she claim being black when half of her family is white. If she was white and Asian would she simply claim Asian? And if so, why? Isn’t it racist to never want to claim your whiteness?

As a person that used to teach people of all races, both sexes, all income levels how to approach an interview, I can say without a doubt that it is not only black women that have "professional" hair regulations. Men, women, trans, literally EVERYONE has some sort of regulation on style, length, color restriction, etc... That is why there is a professional uniform. That's why people in office settings or corporate atmospheres all pretty much look the same. These are real things that have happened: men need to cut their hair and can't wear head coverings unless they are religious requirements. Women can not wear juvenile hair styles like pig tails, pony tails, "space buns" or colorful hair accessories like neon clippies. No artificial colors in any fashion, blocks, stripes, or whole head. No "messy bun" styles on men or women. There are men that have to shave off facial hair and that is not in a setting for safety mask seal regulation. The list goes on. All these things are documented, also. If there is a meeting that is happening and one team is in suits, ties, skirts & blouses with neat combed hair, even if it is long and the other team is wraring whatever, with whatever hair styles or colors, who, if the corporate world is looking in would be taken seriously? If you are so delicate that someone sets the image of their own business on the world stage and it offends you, then you need therapy to gain coping skills. Does this need to change? Can we change the world business stage? Those are the questions that need to be asked.

It’s viewed as beautiful so it’s shared and they actually encourage non-black people to wear it. Just as the Asians love to share their culture, so do Africans and Caribbeans. I told her mother that the Gaelic language was likely part of her roots! I think it’s great when we all embrace each other’s cultures. I think it’s a compliment to the culture to have others wear the clothes, eat the food, style the hair from cultural inspiration. Even though some feel upset, I think the intention behind “appropriation” is very good and complimentary.

Braids were also a common hairstyle in European and Asian cultures. The Celts, Germans, ancient Greeks and Romans had such a hairstyle. Buddha is also said to have had such a hairstyle. Exctly! As I posted on another video about this, it's also a SUPER SUPER common hairstyle here in entire South Am, it goes WAAAYY BACK to pre-columbian era , and its even an escential part of native heritage attire (like the mapuches and aymaras and quechuas). It's also a SUPER common hairstyle in schools, as in most of them its a mandatory hairstyle as part of the schools dress code. We are also a mix of a huge range of skin colors here, so dark skined, white skinned and everything in between, we all wear them. Thinking braids belong only to one race or culture is just riddiculous. These people fail to acknowledge the fact that through history , cultures around the world eventually came to a similar conclussion about how to tie and style hair creating patterns.

Understanding the difference between Cultural Appreciation and Cultural Appropriation is key here. As "one cannot simply walk into Mordor", one cannot truly appreciate another culture by simply staring at it from afar! We appreciate other cultures by learning about their History and traditions, by cooking and/or tasting their cuisine (especially when it's so willingly offered...usually at a reasonable price), by listening to their music, by wearing their traditional garb and hairstyles, and so on! When someone "appropriates" a culture (or just a specific part of it), they deliberately and PUBLICLY claim ownership of it while blatantly disregarding its historical significance and/or origin. With regard to the particular hairstyle in question, this is a case of the former; NOT the latter!

It actually has. However, unfortunately for this young lady, not in the way she insists. Not all of those cultures are or were from Africa, or indeed even from places where the indigenous peoples there would be considered "black" or "not white". In short, there are numerous cultures all over the world where wearing many small braids at once (not just one large one, for example) is a part of their historical, cultural identity. One of those is the culture of the Armenian people. A culture often considered "white" (at least by American standards) The kicker? Kim K is actually Armenian. Making many small braids at once, very similar to what Kim wore, is actually from Kim's heritage. So, in an effort to stop discrimination (as I do believe the young woman, that she really really means well and thinks she's fighting for what's right. She's just foolish), she's actually discriminating against a culture that has experienced very horrible travesties (ie The Armenian Genoc*de. Sorry for the self-censorship. YT often auto censors comments with certain "offensive" words. Even if the context shows that the person is being critical of said offensive thing) Now, Kim K is incredibly privileged as an individual, and I don't pity her. I can’t believe how people are acting nowadays. I am a 16 year old girl and even I know that even though it’s important for people to be educated on which styles come from where, we should still all be able to appreciate them. Whatever deity that created us did so for us to be equal and we should all be able to appreciate and love each others cultures while being able to wear what we want. When you go to. We have wars being taught, people dying and do you think those people are thinking about what culture your hairstyle came from? My family is a blend of all cultures and do you think my Asian cousin is upset that my black cousin is wearing Asian attire? Not at all. We should all focus on more important things in life like the relationships we build with others and to love those who we have before they are gone. No one should worry about whether or not what they like to wear offends someone, don’t let it stop you from loving yourself and don’t let anyone drag you down because they just want to separate people ❤

I was curious to learn what hairstyles are classified as "black hair" and see where they pop up historically as a cultural style other than Africa. My quick internet search brought up three hairstyles; cornrows, fulani braids, and bantu knots. Cornrows were the traditional hairstyles of the Roman Vestal Virgins. The Roman Vestal Virgins were the Priestesses of Vesta, who was the goddess of the hearth. Artwork and sculptures that date back to ancient Greece also typically show the warriors and heroes with cornrows. I could not find Fulani and bantu knots (which I've learned were also called Zulu knots) originating in or occurring in other places other than Africa. Again, this was a quick internet search with my morning coffee in one hand. I learned quite a bit, since learning about anything to do with cultural and mythology from that past is always interesting.

According to how long I wanted to spend doing it to why I was doing it. Keep it out of my eyes…French braid from part to ears. Keep off my collar when in uniform…Crown braid. Gladly, it's a fringe movement, but it exists, and they're loud. So in essence, aren't these leftists appropriating American outrage culture? Checkmate, kinda. Maybe I should tell them... and also that Europeans (and everyone else for that matter) have always braided their hair. A famous example are the ancient Germanics, whose men loved to braid their hair and beards. I'd like to see those leftists time travel and unleash their outrage on a braided Viking, telling them he can't do it because people in some far away land he isn't even aware of do it too. The argument that Black women are discriminated against for wearing braids, while Kim Kardashian is not has no bearing on the argument of appropriation. That's a straight racial discrimination issue. Furthermore, the whole idea of "Cultural Appropriation", when someone wears hairstyles or clothes as their own personal style is stupid. Who are Blacks, or any race, to say you can't where my race's traditional fashion, or use adopt my race's lifestyle? This is the U.S. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is every individual's right. The issue is when a person mimics a person's racial identity in a derogatory, mocking way. Blackface is racism. The Cleveland Indians' use of Chief Wahoo was racist, because it's an unflattering caricature of a Native American. However, I don't think that Cleveland using the name Indians is racist, although it is racially insensitive, since Native Americans object to it. Certain tribes of Native Americans have proud warrior histories, which is the reason for adopting the name Indians. But, they are not Native Americans, and they are calling themselves that, so this would actually be a case of appropriation. A non-Native American person claiming to be Native American, when they know they are not, is cultural appropriation. But, a non-Native wearing a bone necklace is just someone liking the style and/or admiring the Natives' warrior history. I'm Japanese, and I wouldn't wear a bone necklace. But, it's because I have been mistaken for a Native American, even by Natives from reservations. (I have also been mistaken as Chinese by Chinese, Korean by Koreans, and Latin American by Latin Americans, Oddly, Japanese think I'm half-Japanese, although I am full-blooded.) I wouldn't wear a bone necklace because it would seem like I'm trying pass myself off as a Native. It wouldn't be appropriation, because, if I did wear a bone necklace, because it would be I do like the style and admire Plains Natives warrior culture. I just don't, because I don't want to cause misunderstandings. Being Japanese, I wouldn't have a problem with someone wearing a kimono, if they wanted to emulate traditional culture. I'd think it was weird, for the extreme to which they were taking it. But, then I think it's a little weird when traditionalists Japanese, actually in Japan, wear kimonos outside of ceremonial functions. Is it racial appropriation if non-Europeans wear pants? Is it gender appropriation if women wear pants? I got jumped, when I was a kid, for being Asian. I was called racially derogatory names in childhood and adult life. It wasn't as bad as Blacks or Latinos, who get followed in stores, or don't get hired for jobs, because of their race. But, I have experienced racial discrimination. Minorities should focus on real issues... ones that matter, and not focus on people that actually appreciate our cultures.

Well, that what she said...if K kardashian is not black she may not wear that hair. She doesn't notice that not allowing her (KK) to do it bc of her race it's racism and then they speak about cultural appropriation is = racism... the logic! -🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

In the nineties, I remember black people used to love it when other races copied their hairstyles. My sister and I used to braid our hair like that back then and we always got compliments… I don’t know why people these days get offended by anything.

I think wearing braids and such is okay- as long as someone doesn't forget where these styles came from and respects that. Saying you invented a recipe or hairstyle isn't okay- but saying you were inspired by a specific culture in your choice is acceptable. It may educate someone on this topic and promote a more open dialogue. Some people are just so focused on being victims that they are too busy crying about their victimhood rather than doing something about it- that young lady should be focusing on furthering herself and showing others that having braids isn't going to stop her from achieving her goals.

I know this is a talking point, but that doesn't make it less true: To appropriate is to appreciate.

Look everyone, as a 40 year old Croatian Electrical Engineers, I'm going to speak for all Croatian Electrical Engineers, we don't want you using AC motors anymore. That is cultural appropriation.

I was always under the impression that appropriation was taking things that were meaningful or sacred to a culture (such as traditional native headdresses etc) and using them in a way that trivialises and disrespects the culture of origin. Wearing an everyday hairstyle that actually had no meaning or significance other than protecting the wearers hair or keeping it out of their face isn't disrespecting a culture in any way.

So you determine the line that is crossed as a culture. So as an Italian American I can declare to one eats pizza again or makes pizza again unless they are of Italian descent. This whole argument is childish.

🤣🤣I can tell you what she would say..."Your name is not Italian you are appropriating the Italian culture...."🤦‍♂🤦‍♂You can tell her "to appropriate" comes from Latin, you may not use it...
