In anticipation of 'landmark's release, Hippo Campus performed a full album preview at Minneapolis club Icehouse on Feb. 7. Nearly 200 lucky guests filled the room to get a live first listen of the quartet’s 13 new songs, courtesy of The Current.

My daughter made me go to a Hippo Campus concert at First Avenue last winter because she was only 17, and needed a parent to get in. When the music started, I was mesmerized---If you can imagine, they are even more amazing in concert than they are on their albums! Ever since, my daughter and I both look for opportunities to see them again (thank you, MN State Fair!!). These guys have real talent as musicians, poets, and showmen. So happy for the success of these Minnesota boys!!

I hope they always remember the positive impact they are having on so many people ...and that they are doing such an amazing job! Not afraid to be themselves at all. Who needs fast, distorted and sloppy guitar shreds when there are these amazing guitar tones and harmony.

This is the first band I've stumbled across where I can truly discern between each individual band members instrument. It's amazing to just listen carefully to each individually and see how they perfectly tie in and harmonise. They're all so equally talented and it truly feels like a band, not just lead vocals and a little background strumming.

As someone who's just found this band today, I'll say there's a lot to appreciate there. I appreciate each member's individual skill, and that they understand composition as well, to the point that they feel confident starkly separating each instrument's role while still blending together cohesively. Greater than the sum of the parts. Also it's actual music, and not modern attention-seeking crap, which is definitely not something I say as often as I'd like these days. But the one thing I will say is that they don't elicit a range of emotions from me. They're very good at drawing out one or two particular emotions, something like the infinite euphoria of youth, viewed from both present and past, but when they boldly go beyond that, it's a bit too nebulous to pack that kick, and falls a bit flat with me personally. Too vague to connect with me. This was 5 years ago now, so I'd be interested to see if their range has improved since then. I'd like to hear a few more grounded, crunchy tracks from them, with more than the upbeat but floaty ethereal sound paired with falsetto.
