I hate doing anything inside of car doors. No matter how careful you are, by the time you've got what you were doing completed and unstuck off everything like latches, locks, handle mechanisms, wires, speakers, crash protection etc, your hands and arms will always have a million cuts.

When I worked in a dealership we had a recall on the locks of a simular crossover. At least there was no butyl tape on the vapour barrier here. I think I gut up to changing all 4 doors on up to 3 cars in an hour at the end. Practise really is useful when it comes to that job but is also kind of vehicle specific.

Those jobs, like unsticking stuck window winders and doorlocks were the jobs that my Father got me to do as a 10+ year old, smaller arms and hands. Often needed doing everytime he came home on leave with the car being in the unheated garage, with Pigeons and other birds nesting in the roof occasionally Wasps, for up to 9 months or longer at a time. Stored covered semi dry, on blocks/stands, just water drained but the oil/filter changed each time. Another of my unpaid jobs if not in term time. Admiralty issue 20/40.

Ah happy days with our old freelander regularly replacing window mechs and door locks. Btw what’s the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One’s really heavy, the other’s a little lighter.

That's a fiddly job, but you did it! I found these jobs as a mechanic always the worst. But weirdly satisfying when finished, yeah I'm weird. Bummer the rear door window regulator wasn't good. Good job Matt.

Enjoyed that, keep up the great work. Despite its bad reputation, I enjoy driving and working on my Freelander. It's not hard to work on, for most things anyway. One day the tailgate wouldn't open, removing the trim panel while sitting in the boot was quite challenging.

@furiousdriving what is the situation with the W123? Surely it should be in a lockup or in the barn under cover to stop it rusting further into your driveway. Also in Australia once you agree to sell a number plate it must be removed from the car in question ASAP & you must inform the DVLA within 7 working days of this happening. Also we can only have number plates made up by the DVLA themselves you cannot go to any old place to get number plates. It costs around £150 to get a set of number plates. And if you need to replace them again you must order them through our equipment of the DVLA for around £85 for a set. Everything is controlled by the DVLA in Victoria Australia.

At least you know how the window motor goes in now so will take less time next time. A very frustrating and fiddly job. Remember having to refit my Volvo 240 drivers glass back in the channels as window motor bolts had gone very loose. Mine held in with a type of metal clip to the glass.

Congratulations! 🙂 I don't know how those mechanisms are supposed to work so I would not have had the confidence to tackle such fiddly jobs. The inaccessibility of the mechanisms made me think that the door design is fundamentally flawed. Perhaps the door "cavity" could have been formed with a completely replaceable inner panel. I am just thinking aloud.

This is how VW did it in the late 90's/early 00's, check out mk4 Golfs and B5 Passats. The window regulator is attached to a "carrier panel" which comes away from the door, leaving the door completely open once removed. They have their own issues, but it's not too bad to work with and better than trying to work through tiny holes like this. Or C5 Audi A6s, once you remove the door panel the inner door is totally open! There's a steel frame supporting the window frame but no sheet steel whatsoever.

Land rover don't learn, I had to do the seized locks on my sisters Freelander many years ago. I had to do the exact same job, but for the exact same fault on her 2015 Evoque. I have done drivers door and rear passenger side door,I look forward to the other 2 doors getting stuck shut. They had the foresight to make it possible to take the door cards off with the doors closed mind you lol 😂

@@furiousdriving nope, you can take the door cards off the Freelander with the doors closed too lol. As a bonus, the Freelander was baby poo green and the Evoque is a slightly different shade of baby poop green. As a plus point, I fitted a dash cam in the Evoque, and it only took 30 minutes due to the huge gaps between the trim and rubbers 😂

Looks like a painful job will probably find lots of cuts on your arms later! A check for testing door locks is to push screwdriver into the lock catch and test it without shutting the door. That way if anything goes wrong the door is still open!! MGFs really prone to lock failure as well, such a pig to work on.

British number plates are a mystery to anyone not British. I understand there's the year of manufacture in there, but then there are personalized plates? It's very confusing.

since 2001 the first 2 letters say where the car was registered, the 2 numbers which half of which year, the last 3 are random, if they say something its a random and suddenly valuable, like finding a good Pokemon card...
@TassieLorenzo

@@furiousdriving Are personalised plates, like say FURIOUS, allowed? :) In Australia they are allowed and they are not even that expensive (something like a $220 annual fee); it's the single, and double digit historic plates that are uber expensive (e.g., you might see the plate "9" or "27" on a Rolls Royce belonging to some important person). Triple digit historic plates are expensive too, though not quite as much as the single and double, you might see 115 on a CR-V or something, lol.

Sorry but trickle chargers are horrible things. I hate them with a passion as a mechanic. I will only use them if I’m leaving a car for more than 6 months. If your battery won’t start after a few weeks sitting. Then it’s a crap battery or you have some sort of battery drain. Also just my personal experience you are using batteries that do not have enough capacity. Always always put the biggest CCA battery you can physically fit into the slot in your car & never buy a cheap battery. That is one item I will never cut costs on I will always buy the £150 or £200 battery every time I want these to last a good few years. For instance I have a 2002 Rover 75 V6 connoisseur as my daily driver it has a 760CCA battery in it. I have left it for 90 days & it starts on the button every time.
