Freelander 1 Rear Door Fix - Door Won’t Open - Easy Fix!

Having had this issue myself in the past I must admit to stopping at the point where it was the micro switch and buying the whole handle off eBay. I love how you went that step further to fixing the root cause. Great video would have saved me the £70 odd quid I spent on the handle ! Keep them coming

Excellent comprehensive video 🙏 I had the same problem. Did away with the pivoting handle altogether and mounted a good quality A4 stainless push to make with large button on a bit of ply. Replaced the solenoid at the same time. These little weak points are sent to try our invention :-)

Great video, question though ... what do I do if jumping the wires doesn't activate the mechanism? Is there another way to get the door open? thanks. All the fuses are good related to rear window / wiper / central locking. apologies, just rewatched your vid. I have to struggle to get those lower screws out of the internal door panel ... right?

Thanks. Yes if the solenoid is not working you have to get access to it inside the car via rear panel.

Another question. I am going to do you switch change, just ordered the part, but ... Im assuming my real issue is elsewhere. The solenoid or perhaps a wiring fault in the door. The windows / demister and wiper all work though. Any suggestions as to my next diagnostic? Also, have I understood correctly that when the microswitch is pressed two things happen ... a) the solenoid is activated unlocking the door and b) a message is sent to the window that draws it down a few mm. If (like on mine) neither of these things happens, what does that suggest to you? Thanks @@comeinhandynow

a) and b) yes to both. If neither happening then probably the microswitch at fault. Needs changing. Confirm by manually connecting the microswitch wires together to activate a door unlock. However I just noticed you already said you tried this and it didn’t work so I guess the problem needs tracing back through the wiring diagram to see where the wires go to. wiring in haynes manual. @JohnsSpoonArt

Thanks so much for the reply. Yeah it has to be wiring I think. Clearly no power getting to the microswitch so my hunch is either chaffed wiring in the tailgate or perhaps a dodgy relay. (Think i read there is one behind the side panel of the boot, offside.) The rear window works so it cant be solenoid and a window motor issue. Fixed .. for free! Huge result. It was a broken wire (orange / black) only just noticed it, figured id join the ends together and see what happenned. Flashed across the microswitch wires and the window dropped / door unlocked instantly. So .. the £300 Freelander takes another step closer to resurrection! Got to deep clean the biozared that is the interior now, then it needs a coil spring and it's pretty much ready for an MOT. Will post some videos on my channel when it's all done and send you a link. Hi how am I supposed to attempt to fix it if the door won't open ? I hearvthe microswitch and I hear the solenoid jumping in the door skin but it will not budge..😮

Did you actually watch the video? I talked about that scenario at the start. Taking the inside door card off while the door is shut sounds difficult but some people have managed that and it’s the only option if the solenoid is working but not opening the door. Try repeated pushing / banging the door to see if it will unstick while pressing the handle repeatedly at the same time, before you go that far though.

@comeinhandynow I did mate door cards off.. banged it with rubber hammer repeatedly & soaked with wd40 between the tail light the boot shut where the latch is I dismantled the handle & micro switch thats ok. Dont know what else I can do I think the latch I siezed. 🙄

Thanks. Probably the solenoid motor wore out or oxidised up or the lock got stiff. You will probably have to take the inside panel off to get to it, as briefly mentioned near the start.

What if when the wires touch the door doesnt open , checked all the fuses and they’re fine , we did this then it stopped working again took it apart then when touching wires together it doesnt open ….

It sounds like you did have it working and now it’s stopped again, which would imply a problem with either your wires or fuse, which I see you have checked. Have you definitely done a double unlock on the fob remote? It won’t work unless all door are unlocked. If non of those then you have to get to the solenoid in the lock to check - that is the awkward inside job of removing the rear door cover. Not something I have had to do, yet.

@@comeinhandynow yeah checked everything and your video worked great bought the button and it started working then i just stopped and like when the wire touch nothing soo ill have to take door off i think ...
