Also I hold world records for my memory and was the USA Memory Champion until a couple months ago (I didn't go this year). I don't understand whatsoever how remembering games like that is possible without memory training. I feel like I'd never be capable of remembering games like that without explicit memorization and occasional rehearsal

This speed run at lower levels (my own😊) is like a box of chocolates! Takeaways for me - theory matters, and understanding why the theory is what it is matters even more. In GM Danya’s videos I’ve seen plenty of examples even in trad openings where in the first 10 moves, simply obeying “opening principles” can get you into trouble.

I don't know if you get a chance to read these comments Daniel, but as you get into games in the 1300 and up rating I would really enjoy if you gave an example of how to play with the Pirc. I've had several games where I thought I understood how to go on the attack only to flounder due to a positional oversight and end up a move or two too slow to win, and would love to hear your assessment on how to structure an attack and under what circumstances you need to hold off to prioritize defense.

The reason the Hippo is so common at this rating level is because people that play at our level are learning openings that the Hippo exploits. It's hard to know what to do against these off the wall openings. It's almost gambitish.
