I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 25 years old on April 17th, 2019. This video tells the story of my symptoms leading up to diagnosis, my visits to the doctor, and the days following my diagnosis. Being diagnosed with a chronic illness can be very scary and challenging, but I am doing so much better now. Hey! I am a type one (going on 7 years) and i know that you (and many in this audience) are new diabetics. I remember what it felt like to search for others going through the same thing. I just want to sat that this is a hard hard thing to go through and process and understand (sometimes even years after your diaversary) and i just want to say--to anyone who may need to hear it--that it is going to be okay, and that there is a community of us out here who understand and care deeply ❤️

In June of 2020 I had my yearly checkup done and everything was perfect. By August of that same year I lost about 35 lbs pretty quickly and was VERY thirsty and tired. I'm 6'2" tall and was 178 lbs. I decided to go see a doctor and my blood sugar was 598! I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 45! Talk about a shock! Insulin dependent for the rest of my life now. I'm just thankful that I didn't just ignore it.

I just came across your vlogg and your diagnosis story sounds exactly like mine. I was also 25 y/o when I was diagnosed, and so on. Remember this, you are incredible, everyone who does live with t1d they are champions. no-one understands how much this diagnosis affect our lives, we can explain but no-one understands how much work it is around it. It is not just about injecting, controlling your gl and have sweets in your bag it is so much more than that. Thanks for opening up Laura, you are brave :)

Hi Laura! I found your channel today after searching for some T1D content. I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago, and your story is the first one I've heard since being diagnosed myself. Laura - Stay strong. I was put in ICU and ended up in coma. DKA and ended up staying for 10 days. I had all the same symptoms but put it down to menopause! I was 56 when diagnosed. All good now. That was 2.5 years ago. The biggest challenge is learning how much insulin to take. Please stay strong. I know the confusion, first time the nurses make my own shot was scary. The disbelief, frustration and hurt you described in your video I can 100% relate to. When i first got diagnosed i was on the brink of being in coma and I remember that the doctor saying to me that my bloodsugar was at around 35/45 when it should be 4/7 im grateful that im alive but its so hard living with all the equipment

Amazing story. I was diagnosed two mounts before you, at age 30. We have a lot in common, I’m also a biologist and know that it helped me to understand how to manage this new situation. My boyfriend was also there to support me (now my husband) and l can tell you that this situation only made our relationship stronger. I cried for almost this whole video. My story is so similar to yours- especially the part about the first few injections. I cried every injection for the first week and it was just so hard. It was cathartic listening to you talk about this as I always feel like I’m trying to avoid my diagnosis and pretend it doesn’t exist or that it’s just an insignificant part of life in the hopes of returning to normalcy. Feels good not to be alone.
