awesome video, I'll have to check out the book. Not a huge anime nerd but I can see a lot of the same trends in "fandoms" all over. I think it's related to my interest in so-bad-its-good movies, which seem to form subjectivity in a similar decentralized way as to these fandoms.

i never thought about moe elements like a collection from a database of prescribed characteristics exactly like that before. when u brought up gelbooru it started to click with me. it's easy to see connections in characters over the decades but when i look at all the variations of combining moe elements in otaku oriented shows, it seems more like they're adding many specific tags to a character rather than imitating one from the past and only slightly changing the formula.

Bless these booru databases that satiates my aut... otaku consumption desires on compiling and searching for specific moe elements

Wonder if this is the database consumption thing Digi once mentioned. While it is unique, it also gives me a tinge of uneasiness as it resembles how a hive-mind works and the way we all derive meaning from the same 'database'. Cool vid !

Very interesting, good video and thanks for the reading recommendation. Otaku analysis literature always seemed interesting, but I never got a recommendation that really caught my eye (that had an English PDF, anyway)

There are many good English texts on Anime and Otaku by authors such as Patrick Galbraith, Marc Steinberg, and Thomas Lamarre (just to name just a few). If you check out Pause and Select's channel, there's a book club podcast centred around anime, manga, and Japanese media more broadly. It's a good place to find books about the topic and people talking about them to hook you in so you don't go blind (amusingly, joe in that episode is quite harsh on Azuma but has of recent mellowed his criticisms because of the value of database consumption as an idea). Also, if you're having trouble finding PDFs of texts, try out library genesis (libgen), as its a database of academic books, similar to scihub. Should also mention that I happen to be a participant in the latest episodes of the Pause and Select bookclub too on 'Media Theory in Japan', which helped as a reference for this video. Hope this information helps.
So its like by interacting with anime you learn about these "moe features" and can be influenced by and/or gain knowledge of this theoretical database?

Wow, great take on the book. Most discussion I see online of this misses the point usually by getting unnecessarily pedantic cause nerds.

To anyone watching this video, just read the damn book. Its easy to read, short and available online. You'll never get as good of an understanding of the idea from a second hand source.

Good book, I read it some time ago, but he's wrong in describing moe. Moe is not a type of design or a series of features, moe is a relationship, a form of interaction between characters and fans/consumers, it can be enhanced but never fully manufactured, for every Dejiko and Rei Ayanami there are dozens if not hundreds of forgotten characters, failures.
