I hid myself, my anxiety and my oddity, trying to manage other people's impressions like Hitori with her friends at home or at a restaurant with Re. But I've always been like bocchi at a festival. And my wit worked) that's why I wasn't even an outcast in the class, rather a ghost, although I probably just embellished... although one friend even said that there was always some kind of fun atmosphere around me... a social phobia can have social skills but remain a hikikomori. And now after leaving college I became a recluse, or continued to be one... I even started talking to myself although I used to think silently. And soon I'll have a guitar

Introversion is most definitely a spectrum (or a shrubbery), and I'm somewhere between Hitori and Ryo. I've even got an embarrassing "horror story" that makes me feel cringey just remembering it. Back when I got my first car, I decided to explore my hometown a bit more thoroughly, because I'd only been to a couple restaurants with my family beforehand. And so, each day, either before or after work, I'd go to a different restaurant at random (this was back when a single sit-down meal cost like, twenty bucks instead of forty). It was a fun bit of urban exploration for me as a teen. And then one day, I decided to go to a slightly fancier restaurant. It was pretty busy, so even after I'd been shown to a table, it took a half hour for someone to take my order. I wasn't bothered by it, because I had decided what I wanted, and then spent the rest of the wait reading an ebook on my phone. Ordering and receiving my food didn't take that long. The food was delicious, and I managed to finish the book I was reading. So, I decided to order dessert. Now apparently, I'm a lot more expressive while reading than I thought I was, because my waitress returned with my dessert and my receipt, having given me a 50% discount on my meal, before telling me I'd find The One someday. ........yyyyyeeeaaaahhhh, she thought I was waiting for a date, desperately texting said date after awkwardly ordering a meal, and then getting teary-eyed and ordering dessert because I'd been stood up. I was *_absolutely_* too awkward to say anything other than "thanks" as I got up to leave with my dessert in a to-go box. Like, if she'd asked me if I'd been on a date, I could have laughed and said I was just reading a somewhat intense book, but she surprised me with the discount, gave me a verbal pat on my head, and then left before I could say anything. That was the last place I visited alone for like, two months.

I don't think Bocchi is an introvert at all. She doesn't like being by herself, she doesn't want to be by herself; she's is straight up lonely, and suffers by herself. This really just makes her situation even sadder. She wants to socialise more than anything - she needs to socialise. It might look like introversion from an outside point of view, but I don't think it is. If she was fine by herself, she would not go to such lengths to socialise. The reason she flees now and then is to rest and recover. She needs to recharge her batteries as it were. Trust me; fighting against your anxiety is exhausting. It's not that she wants time alone - she's just about to have a nervous breakdown. Crippling social anxiety, yes. Introverted, no.
@almostcheesecake2 ай бұрын
I see what you mean, but even introverts need a friend or two. I would argue she's going to such lengths because she has absolutely no one, and Kessoku Band is where she finds that small friend group most introverts have
@yamazaki7522 ай бұрын
A lot of people misunderstand what it means to be introverted. Which, to be fair, the definition doesn't help either. Introverted folks are able and willing to be social. They enjoy it as much as any other kind of person does. HOWEVER, what makes the introverted different from the extroverted is the concept of the social battery. Introverts have a very limited social battery, and it needs recharging every so often, usually by being away from social situations. Extroverts are the opposite - they need that social time to be good with alone time for extended periods (which is why a lot of people went stir crazy during COVID lockdowns). It is worth noting that this isn't a black and white concept. Some introverts can handle a lot of social time without needing a lot of alone time to recover, and vice versa.
@domgo3492 ай бұрын
I mean, introverts still like having friends and spending time with them, especially on a deeper level. An introvert likes being alone, but not their whole life. Bocchi spent practically her entire life alone and therefore hated it since she was always isolated, so she forced herself to go out to strengthen her bond with kessoku band.

Those are different elements separate from being introverted. The only thing that being introverted means is needing "me-time" to recharge and decompress after socializing so much. That's it. Everything else is misconception and mislabeling.

I don't get enough out of social interaction to justify the effort of purposely seeking it out. Now at 30 I work from home, get groceries delivered, and spend months at a time without seeing another human. I had friend groups in high school and college since there were some alright people there, and if I'm forced to be around people, I may as well make the most of it, but it didn't even occur to me to maintain those friendships once I graduated. I've always been quite annoyed with people having a false definition of introversion. I'm an introvert. I know this for a fact. I'm someone that can live perfectly content and even somewhat happy from not having super close friends for a year, just acquaintances that I'd socialize with in classes (don't ask me, it happened from moving). However, people that I'm close to (who are typically people that I'm very social with) are very surprised when I say that I'm introverted. A therapist for my brother once made it very clear. Introversion and Extroversion has nothing to do with being lonely. I repeat. NOTHING. Introversion and extroversion is purely about something described as a social battery from this therapist. It's bad to have this battery drained. Extroverts charge this so called battery by socializing. Parties, groups, etc. Introverts, on the other hand, charge this battery through being on their own instead. Literally the opposite of extroverts. In the real world, it's never good to overcharge your battery, or else you may permanently damage how well it can be used, and the same applies here. It's healthy to consistently drain and charge your battery, rather than in a perpetual state of charged (and if it's in a perpetual state of drained I question your ability to make decisions for yourself or if you're actually not a extrovert/introvert). This makes it very clear that introverts have no problem socializing. In fact, introverts love socialization on some level. They're sill human, and socializing with people they're close to is important for them. Although some just socialize with an infinite amount of close acquaintances, others tend to have a very close knit group of friends that they drain their battery on. They just typically know when their battery is drained and choose to let it charge instead of pushing past 0 instead. This is the same for extroverts, they socialize a lot, but eventually need to let it drain as to not overload themselves and their lives. Being socially anxious has nothing to do with introversion or extroversion. I knew a couple of extroverts that were socially anxious, however, their need to socialize makes it more common for them to move beyond this anxiety. With introverts, their inherent want to be alone more than socialize encourages social anxiety, and thus, why social anxiety is usually associated as a *problem* for introverts instead of extroverts. However, this association eventually became mistaken as being one and the same by many people, introverts and extroverts included. Although I personally am not someone that enjoys Bocchi too much, I can appreciate it trying to shed light on stuff like this. However, much of the light being shed just falls flat because, not to their fault, people simply don't know the difference between introversion and social anxiety, and thus, can't really benefit as much from what is taught in the show. Also, I know you were talking about most of these points in the video, I just thought I'd give a little different of a style on it with a bonus perspective.

@@ArtificialDjDAGX-- Eh, that depends on the battery. Some batteries prefer being stored full, others at mid charge. Some batteries can be reconditioned by deep cycling, others can never be recovered. Some batteries are good at deep cycling, others are damaged by it. Even within the same battery technology, differences in charge controller, temperature, cooling, wiring, and manufacturing can change their temperment even before you use them. Lonely people know they are alone, and don't know how to respond. Society cultivates the idea and practice that you should feel bad when lonely, and prescribes this response. That worsens the effect the initial loneliness had. Some people or (even most i guess) are somewhat "introverted" as in they feel better alone than with other people, the reason is most likely cause we break character and feel awkward whenever we socialize in order to sound "normal". And doing so consumes our energy, so the longer the conversation the more awkward it becomes until we run out of energy and show our true shades, and guess what? Not many people would like us for that 🙃. So basically i believe that this " somewhat of condition" is the Fear For Not Being Liked By Other People, or we're basically overthinkers that try to fit in.

Who is Ryo? For the blind, she is their vision. For the deaf, she is their music. For the mute, she is their voice. For the anosmiac, she is their aroma. For the numb, she is their feeling. For the atrophied, she is their muscle. For the starved, she is their sustenance. For the thirsty, she is their water. For the exhausted, she is their energy. For the depressed, she is their happiness. For the disillusioned, she is their hope. For the pessimistic, she is their optimism. For the disadvantaged, she is their champion. For the marginalised, she is their justice. For the oppressed, she is their salvation. For the righteous, she is their symbol. For the enlightened, she is their muse. For the erudite, she is their education. If Ryo speaks, I listen. If Ryo questions, I answer. If Ryo orders, I obey. If Ryo opines, I agree. If Ryo fears, I assure. If Ryo hopes, I dream. If Ryo is happy, I am jubilant. If Ryo is angry, I am apoplectic. If Ryo is sad, I am disconsolate. Ryo is my ideal, Ryo is my romance, Ryo is my passion. Ryo is my strength, Ryo is my compass, Ryo is my destination. Ryo is my language, Ryo is my culture, Ryo is my religion. Ryo is my ocean, Ryo is my mountain, Ryo is my sky, Ryo is my air, Ryo is my sun, Ryo is my moon, Ryo is my world. Ryo is history, Ryo is present, Ryo is future. If Ryo has a million fans, I am one of them. If Ryo has a thousand fans, I am one of them. If Ryo has a hundred fans, I am one of them. If Ryo has ten fans, I am one of them. If Ryo has only one fan, that is me. If Ryo has no fans, I no longer exist. If the whole universe is for Ryo , then I am for the whole universe. If the whole universe is against Ryo, then I am against the whole universe. Huh, I guess I just went through the anime too quickly, or your video just did a good job of highlighting it. It sounded like I was hearing a self-portrait when you were describing Ryo. I'm competent and comfortable in any social environment (even if sometimes I fuck with the atmosphere to humour myself), so much so that people think I know everything that is going on. I don't blame them, I somehow end up being one of the more favorably seen people in any group I insert myself into. It has nothing to do with my looks, I'm butt-ugly. It's just social charisma. The funny thing is that I'm usually the last one to know about social developments. The most recent drama, who's dating who, etc. I don't give myself many opportunities to find out, because I don't care. I'm entertained by myself easily, probably too easily. Even the best friends that I would easily die for, I'll go years without ever talking to them. Only reason that hasn't been the case lately is because I make a conscious effort to reach out since or else I'll just sink deep into whatever I'm doing and take a long time. Not that I personally have a problem with that, but I don't want my best friends to feel like I don't care about them anymore. Also one of my biggest nightmares is just calling them out of the blue and finding out they've been dead for over 6 months and I missed their funeral. That'd suck in a lot of ways. A decent amount of people that I see call themselves introverted aren't really introverted, imo. They either are JUST socially anxious, or just have people that they don't like talking to. A lot of people have this extreme view of extroversion, as if extroverts just like talking all the time and to anyone and everyone and are really competent at doing it. But that's just me.

it's funny how easy it is to be both characters at once, I'd describe myself as an introverted extrovert or extroverted introvert (not sure which would be the correct order), I like spending time with other people, but I'm more of that friend in the corner just Vibing, occasionally adding to jokes or just having a bit of fun, however I also have a nasty case of social anxiety, and so I have a hard time actually doing more than that, I've had a few friends help me out of my shell, and a couple who took a 20 killoton block of tnt to my walls, but the big thing is I generally CAN'T be the one to start that interaction, they have to be the ones to drag me out kicking and screaming until I realize it's not so bad. The whole ordeal around introversion and introverts is so weird. Some ppl talk like they never went to schools or saw more than 5 people in their entire life. The way they describe characters like Bocchi and Ryo as unique, interesting or unrealistic is just... WHAT? And I'm not gonna tell you what an introvert is since I'm no expert, but I'm gonna say that it seems like people, when they talk about introversion - extroversion, often try to use the spectrum. However, they can't really convey the idea since there are multiple aspects, and somebody is gonna disagree on smth. I think two of the most fundamental traits that ppl often argue about is how much do one want to be alone/around people and how much anxiety/confidence they have. This is not smth written into stones like a mathematics theorem, each person can have a different definition of an introvert so to argue about it is quite pointless. ( BTW, this is not to dissmiss the argument against being an introvert means being inept at sociolizing because that's just blatantly dumb).

Here's a video idea on the opposite topic: Extrovert + social anxiety vs Extrovert without Social Anxiety (you come up with the names, Im terrible at them). And there are examples already in the show, and in the same band: Kita and Nijika. Kita Social Anxiety's traits differ from Bocchi. Kita tries to do whatever she needs to do to get friends, aka be socially accepted, for what? To not be lonely! Meanwhile Nijika is more confident in what she wants to do and does whatever she wants, in the same vein as Ryo. Essentially: Ryo is to Bochi, what Nijika is to Kita.

I think I'm broken guys. I'd classify myself as an Ambivert. I'm really outgoing around people I'm familiar with, but around strangers I am quieter, especially if we have no common interests. E.g.: In public I will just completely avoid eye contact and often have a resting bitch face. Sometimes I don't.. but that's only when I'm in a really good mood or when I'm surrounded by friends. I both love spending time alone, and also hate it. I love it because I'm happy being alone and it lets me relax, decompress and be introspective. But I also hate it because I want to be around someone I like. I want to express myself and get out of my own head. I want to be talked both to and at. So I guess I'm boooooth? 😂😭 I'll sometimes just choose to put no effort into socialising, put in too much effort or sort of balance it out and eventually die of battery drain. Tldr: Me is the best, they don't shit talk me or anything and they like everything I like. But they tend to be a bit too "yes and" so I sometimes need a break from them. I think that's the jist of it. Damn, sociability levels are really complicated huh?

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this idea expressed but I still appreciate this video. Personally when I first watched bocce I the rock I heavily related to Bocchi becuase for the longest time I considered myself an introvert but also chafed against that label because it didn’t quite feel right. I wasn’t quite lonely by choice but rather through social anxiety (gender stuff definitely didn’t help either though). Seeing bocchi and relating to her and people talking about her and the difference between introversion and social anxiety really helped me with myself and my own emotions and interacting with people. I used to be really lonely but now am less so and bocchi directly and indirectly helped with that.
