You can't play piano any "better" than Hiromi because she has an absolutely unfettered pipeline from her soul to her fingertips.
@rocketpost15 жыл бұрын
Hiromi just has crazy ability on the piano and this was a rollercoaster of a performance. You never know what she's going to play next from crashing chords to soft lyrical passages but technically she's got it all and more besides. Her playing is full of contrast and rhythmic surprises. Sheer brilliance.
Her playing reminds me what freedom we were born to be is...

I play piano, I've been to Japan, I've been studying Japanese for about a year and a half and have listened to countless Japanese musicians. Yet somehow this beautiful little insane orchid slipped through my fingers. After I stopped convulsing on the floor after hearing this I thought to myself, I need a cigarrete. Then all I could muster was a "Fucken A".

When I watch this I worry about repetitive strain injury in the years to come....and I can't bear the idea of a future without her playing the soundtrack to me life.
@MrJdsenior4 жыл бұрын
The way she plays, she could induce repetitive strain injury in about 10 seconds. ;-P But she's STILL going strong (stronger, actually) eight years later! ;-) Hopefully it will continue for many many more years. Hell, the backs of MY arms are cramped by the time she gets done with ONE of these pieces, and I'm just watching.

Just got back from seeing her trio at the Saratoga Jazz Festival and was blown away. What a dynamic performer! Virtually every song got a standing ovation and watching these You Tube videos only confirms that what I saw was real.

Yes, that is the first version of the riff, dating from around 1965. Who knows if Blackmore stole it, or just came up with his riff independently in 1970 (it's pretty easy to play on guitar). But Hiromi's song is a trilogy about gambling/Vegas. I assumed she stuck that in (and it's on the album version too) because SOTW is the most famous song about a gambling house burning down.

To me, this is the essential Hiromi. She's a show girl herself, quoting stuff all over the place. The perfect blend of entertainment and creative genius.

For jazz piano, anyway, no freakin doubt. I think guys like Jacob Collier might give her a fair run for her money as an overall musician, though. I have NEVER seen someone produce this kind of technical display on a piano, I can tell you that...beyond words. Take a look at Yuja Wang, if you haven't seen her play...from the classical side, she's pretty darned impressive too, especially on the more demanding keywork. I think she plays the flight of the bumblebee in about three seconds (kidding, but it's DARN fast).
@heartvalais3 жыл бұрын
John Sikes not only is her technique impressive but her improvisation is like no other musician I’ve heard.

Did Keith Jarrett pass away and no one told me? I love Hiromi, but she still has a long way to go to reach his rarified stratosphere.
@aquamarine999113 жыл бұрын
@@normanklein3155 No, but unfortunately Keith had a stroke which prevents him from playing publicly any more. So we're left with Hiromi.

I've never heard the Gambler before, it's evocative as 'Hall of the Mountain King' for me, but with stylish leavings and elements of dark creeps.

31 people either hit the wrong key for likes, or they are "sour grape" idiots. I'd be willing to bet that there has NEVER lived a pianist who can play like that, and I'm including the Van Clyburns, the Wangs, the Bachs, Beethovens, and Mozarts, and all the rest of them. This girl CANNOT be human, she almost HAS to be from another plane of existence. That was literally mind boggling, I have NEVER heard sounds like that come out of a piano. I don't know how the backs of her arms don't resemble a macrame wall hanging when she walks away from that, if you get my drift. UN BE LIEV ABLE, truly a phenom.

Buy her "Live at the Blue Note" video to see her joking around with "The Gambler". I wouldn't spoil it, but she's one funny girl. On top of everything else. Hiromi wouldn't be Hiromi without her sense of humour (and her flashes of anger for that matter). It's odd to watch her in a big hall like here and the Marciac videos, and then in a room like the Blue Note. She seems more suited for the big hall. Her energy is too much for a small room.
