Hiromitsu Agatsuma (上妻宏光 Agatsuma Hiromitsu) is a Japanese shamisen artist who plays the Tsugaru-jamisen, a larger shamisen with thicker strings than those used for most other styles. Agatsuma began studying the Tsugaru-jamisen at the age of six, and earned his first accolade - top prize at the 1988 All-Japan Tsugaru-jamisen Competition - at 14. This was followed in 1995 and 1996, by top honours at the Tsugaru-jamisen National Competition, said to be the country's most prestigious. Despite the high acclaim he received in the hogaku, or traditional Japanese music world, for his accomplishments, Agatsuma did not rest on his laurels. He not only continued to explore the traditional aspects of his instrument, but also avidly experimented in fusing its sounds with diverse musical genres. I was VERY lucky to attend an Agatsuma concert in Sintra, Portugal, around 2003-4. I was just starting to learn Japanese having enrolled in classes with a Japanese teacher (Touda-sensei). I was only aware vaguely of Japanese music then. In the concert I listened to and learnt about many of "bushi" Tsugaru shamisen songs. I remember it was utterly fascinating since it was so different from the portuguese tradition of string instruments (guitars) yet still I could relate to the power and enjoy it as a different way to channel the "guitar" energy I've always felt familiar. It is utterly fascinating to realize that even though Portugal and Japan are countries wide across the globe, even though the traditional music can be utterly different, still a lot of the same energy can be perceived. I cannot listen to this and marvel at the energy that resonates through my life and wonder how any person anywhere in the world cannot relate to it as well.
