How I Build My Beds
• It's Bed Time
30"x50' beds
12"-18" walkways (whatever you prefer)
Cover the ground with a silage tarp or graze with animals until all the weeds are killed. Broadfork, put down cardboard, wet the down the cardboard, add 4-5" of compost in the beds and put wood chips in the walkways. This turns out to be about 2.5 cubic yards of compost per 30"x50' bed. I buy commercially made compost and get my wood chips from local tree companies for free.

@@yurinosenko3151 We have. a giant container store about 30 minutes from here, so I just called them and they would tell me when they had some good, 35 gallon barrels that were food safe (did not previously contain chemicals). Pickle barrels wind up on craigslist a lot too

Been running 4ft wide 50ft beds, 18 inch pathways for 3 years and thought it worked really well. Glad to see someone convert over. You can really get a lot more in those wide beds and for harvest and planting reasons you really need an 18 inch plath or you'll be mashing plants in the next bed sometimes. Geat video!

VERY interesting!!! Like the bed width and path way discussions. I am strongly considering 36 inch beds and 24 inch paths. Somewhere I listened to the 'edge effects' I am thinking of planting 36 inch wide bed like a 30 inch wide bed

The drawback to setting everything up on a 48” bed which probly won’t affect Jesse as much as he moves around but for the rest of us that are more of your typical farmers and will be at our farms for life but Jesse won’t be this young and energetic as he is now and won’t always be able to jump across beds and reaching across or to the center of a 48” bed will not be easy. It doesn’t sound like it would be that hard but trying to balance and reach when your older is not easy like when your 35. I don’t understand why someone in this industry would want to move so many times tho. Sure, physically moving things isn’t that tough when your young. But, there are so many things that we put into a farm that can not be moved!! We do so many improvements to our souls that I can’t imagine walking away from all that work and having to start from scratch every 2 1/2 years. This is why family farms used to be in the family for 100-200 years but times are a changing anymore

You mentioned with going to 4' rows you have to build in cross over pathways. I have gone to 4 foot rows but I'm so tight for space i did not want to lose that cross over space to a pathway. So my thought was to add a stepping stone, (cinder block or patio stone, or even a rock) in the center of the 4' bed every once in awhile so I can easily step over. Also less pathway maintence. Every little bit helps.
