I didn't think she is scary at all. Well when her monkey fights with Pan, then I was scared. It was too violent for me. But the end of the scene when she talks about Asriel is a failure like dad she just looked so defeated. I always thought she a woman who failed to be a mother and this is crushing her. We clearly can see her pain when Lyra said "I want to be alone". She was defeated again, because she was violent, she was apologetic, guilty, but she understood. And in the episode 6 we can see how much she wanted to be a mother. We can see how much she cared about her, and how much she worried about her. Yes, she is a complex character, but she is really loves Lyra.

I feel like Ruth Wilson is an "actor's actor" if you know what I mean. She's critically acclaimed and well-reviewed in everything she's starred in, and is a heavy hitter in the theatre world too. Mrs. Coulter was one of my favourite characters in HDM, and bases on what we’ve seen so far in trailers and interviews, I’m really looking forward to seeing her brought to life in this series. The part about her daemon especially intrigues me, as it says so much about her character right from the get-go. So cool that they took what I had always assumed was just a result of the narrow perspective and made it a part of who she is and how she interacts with... well, herself.

I agee, how a person treats their daemon says a lot about their character, their morals, their self-love (or hate) and their inner battles and mental/psychological health. Reminds me of this hyena daemon in the Book of Dust. A prequal to His dark materials/The golden compass. That was pretty enerving to read..

The Golden Compass movie made a lot of mistakes but Nicole Kidman was spot on, I'm not even a fan of hers but her acting was amazing. I only know Ruth Wilson from The Affair and Alison couldn't be more differente from Mrs. Coulter! I was at first worried about her casting but all she videos and interviews look great, and she does look physically more like Mrs. Coulter should with the flowy black hair. I first saw Ruth Wilson in Jane Eyre she was such an unknown actor who has gone on to star in Luther, Saving Mr Banks and the Affair. She has such a talent as an actress and has made the role of Mrs Coulter her own and completely different to Nicole Kidman’s portrayal which was a very glamorous ice queen model image. You can see the fierceness in her eyes it matches with her daemon, the connection is spot on despite the fact the monkey is CGI.

It's interesting how they cast Ruth Wilson to play Mrs. Coulter considering how similar her eyebrows are to Nicole Kidman's. Pullman always wanted Kidman to play Marisa and I guess this is how they stay close to that imagination he had for his principal villainess, only this time keeping her hair dark like in the books. I think Wilson is the next best choice ever made for the character because I could really see her tormented and alluring performance in The Affair being channeled into something more sinister and so far she really balances the pleasant seductive side and the ruthless icy undercurrent of Marisa very powerfully.

Ruth is brilliantly connecting Mrs. Coulters character and motives from the first to the third book, where she realizes, she truly loves Lyra. She gets that insight at the beginning of "the Amber spyglass" and for me it seemed a bit out of character, compared to her ambitions of finding Lyra in the other two books for other (spoiler) reasons.

In my mind Mrs. Coulter WAS Nicole Kidman even before the movie came out. Hitchcock blonde was the way I envisioned her. Well, Ruth Wilson has put a stop to all that. She IS Mrs. Coulter. And my favorite thing in this adaptation. Bravo!
