I had a gramophone exactly like this in the early 1960s. It died - the governor globes flew off one day with a terrible clattering. If only you had been there at the time to repair it! Thank you for this wonderful, fascinating and rather touching video - I enjoyed it very much. I'm deeply impressed by your knowledge and skill.

Very good. I had a similar problem with a spring, except the outside end was broken and it was a hook, not a teardrop type. Very neat repair to the spring and I loved the way you bushed the shaft too. Wouldn't have occurred to me to turn the shaft to fit the bushing but I can see it would run more smoothly. Thanks 😀 👍

Thank you :D The shaft had a mushroomed end, so turning it really was my only option.

I have recently acquired an HMV No. 104 and am in the process of giving it an overhaul. Your videos have been so useful, could not have done it without them. Wish I had noticed the part about noting the direction of the spring before putting mine in backwards. Great work.

Your words honor me - I am glad the videos were helpful. After all, that's what I make them for. Enjoy your Gramophone!

Sehr gut!! Gutes Video!

Guten Rutsch!

Hello, as you said "neglected" and more: poorly maintained as we can see on the more or less "rivet" and the tail of the flat spring. Interesting job, thank you showing us. By the way good music (dedicated!). Happy new year 🌲🍹🍸🍰🥂🌲

It must have been in for repair at the local farmer or blacksmith... Remember that times were tough and money was scarce so it may have been no option to send it to a proper repair shop. And not everybody just happens to have the proper tooling for the job, either! Happy new Year to you, too!

Hi, i have this exact model. I found it from my grandma attic. I don't know how it works and notice it's missing it's winding handle and sound box. Can you guide me in finding its parts

Great video. Lucky you had a spring. I just got onw and it has no spring so thinking of making one rather than buying one.

I recently found a Victorola VV-IX for $110 “locally”. I think the motor spring ends are broken off because it winds up and slips when cranked. I need to know though, can these machines play modern records? I’ve heard both ways.
@AstraWerke Жыл бұрын
Yup, exactly once. If you have a record you don't value, give it a try - it's quite an entertaining show watching the shavings fly :D

Hi, thanks for the video, this is really interesting. I am doing the same with a HMV 101 portable gramophone. What did you use to clean off all the old grease from the motor?
@AstraWerke6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I used brake cleaner to dissolve the grease - but I suppose engine cleaner or contact cleaner would work just as well.

Hi I have just serviced my 104A but when I put the tone arm on the record it stops ..????? It was working be for hand.
@AstraWerke8 ай бұрын
Good question - it could be the governor bearings set too tight or the mechanism bolted in wrong so it rubs and loses power, or maybe the spring isn't engaged properly?

Why not one from Germany? There are some very nice 1930s made in Germany phonograph's, even portable. They sound excellent too.

1'48" This is the external cover for the no. 69 motor, held in by three screws. Same kind of motor (no. 59) was used on the 101 portable (later versions). The steel cover was to prevent oil and grease from getting over the interior and also to reduce motor noise. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ_Yhph-q5KpbM0
