VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Thomas was in a horrible car crash that left him paralyzed at the age of 18, but that didn't deter him from tackling living in a tiny home! He knew that he wanted to live off the grid and when the county he lived in wouldn't let him build a Yurt on his land, he decided a skoolie was the next best option. A school bus checked all the boxes for Thomas; a lift for getting his wheelchair in and out of his home, wide enough to have room for 360* turns, and plenty of space for storage! The wood design aesthetic used throughout his skoolie is beautiful, and the shower with slate tiles is huge! Not to be outdone by the wood design, the electronics and solar on this bus are amazing. Of all the school bus renovations I’ve seen, and I’ve seen many, this by far is the best one yet. I’ve watched so many tiny house videos for the last 10 years and wonder why anyone really needs a large house with large payments and large responsibilities. I wish I was younger. I would do something like this in a heartbeat. Before I was divorced I live in a very large house and had a very large yard. I worked my butt off doing landscaping with large flower gardens and a vegetable garden in the back. When I wasn’t outside working, I was inside cleaning, cooking and baking and entertaining my ex’s friends. That life is like being in a prison for life with no chance of parole. If I’d known about this lifestyle when I escaped maybe I would have done something like this. Now I’m to old and broken. I’ve had to give up driving because of macular degeneration and have other medical problems. If I could afford this, I’d live in it without missing a heartbeat. It would be perfect for me. Kudos on your design. It’s beautiful! God bless you and your endeavors.

@@tcscas I’ve been a wheelchair user for about 15 1/2 years now, just over half of my life, because of an L3 SCI, so usually I’m super good at coming up with ways to make something accessible/better for a wheelchair user…. But for some reason I never would have thought to just get a bus that already had a lift. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I know that Winnebago builds wheelchair-accessible vehicles but sine new builds are *vastly* out of my budget, I haven’t looked much at them. They did tell me that they wound help if possible in getting a lift, etc. installed in virtually any vehicle I might choose.

@@wendyannh That's good to know. I assume their service is in Iowa or thereabouts. I have friends and family there. But ideally I need west coast/Oregon. Traveling by inaccessible vehicles or flying are extremely difficult and/or impossible. Hence, one of the reasons I would like a bus.🥴

Thomas, you have some awesome friends. You are very fortunate. Your bus is gorgeous. If you go to Oconee State Park, my hubs and I would love to meet you there, we're from the South Carolina coast. I looked you up on Etsy and cannot find your site. I have spinal injuries from several car accidents and although I'm not paralyzed, I find it painful to walk and use store electric scooters and even have one of my own. I would love to meet you one day, every friend is a treasure. We've been to Biltmore and our favorite restaurant in the area is the Moose Cafe in Asheville. I love this build. I know it's for wheel chair conversion which makes it even greater but I love all the wood work that was used in the build. It just makes everything stand out really nice and you know it's gunna last a really long time.

Harbor Freight sells a hand winch perfect for your bed. It has a steel cable rated for 2 tons I think with a 40:1 gear ratio. I turn mine using a cordless drill to make it fast and easy.

I love to see someone in a wheelchair doing the bus life I also have to use a wheelchair. I can stand for a few minutes then I'm in severe pain. Now I know If thangs keep going like they are some how some way come hell or high water I will be out there.

I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I am disabled with a bad neck & back. I've had to endure a lot, and in severe pain most days. And using a generator has been difficult, but grateful for it to have power, until I can find someone to install my solar. The great thing about "bus life" for someone who is disabled, if you're having a bad day, you're in you're home, and can rest if you need to. I'm still getting my bus worked on, so haven't done any traveling yet. I hope it all works out for you. You can follow our journey on KZbin & Instagram if you're interested... I'm in a wheelchair a lot. I meet Thomas at the tiny house festival. I have a homemade handicap bus. I don't have a video of it finished as a handicap bus but it's a 1973 thomas bus 32 foot. I have a slideout and a wheelchair lift to get to my roofdeck. Airbrushed paint job and i did all the work myself. I won best of show at the tiny house festival in Conyers. So I'm proud of my bus and the acomplismshments I've made. I'll try to do a video of it soon
