I had a stray run into my home. He was scared and when I grabbed him he bit me. Well after a few days, he escaped the cage I had him in. I waited him out and he came out of hiding and was crying. I played with him using a string and he allowed me to pick him up. He even rubbed against my hand lovingly. After that he was attached to me. Other people he would growl at; however after a few weeks he took to a few people. He now is very spoiled and loving to me.

Sounds a lot like my Tigger, a stray kitten I started feeding at about 12 weeks out by the edge of the woods. When she was about 16 weeks old I was trying to figure out how I could trap her without scaring her, and she showed up at the door of my little camper asking to be let in. My resident cat Charlie was curious with no hostility, so I opened the door, she strolled in and was fine until she heard the door click behind her. She hid for 3 days, but eventually came out because I had kept Charlie's feeding schedule, and she wanted dinner too lol. She's about a year old now, and we moved in with my 2 adult sons, so she's socializing all over again, but the boys aren't above bribing her with treats, and they are patient and waited about 2 months, until she was ready to be petted.

"It won't take them long to realise how lucky they've been." Sorry, don't want to be a party-pooper, but I don't think the cats will "realize" that. They'll just socialize and have no cognitive memory of being wild.

This is a good beginning, and I'm glad you share accurate information for less experienced people; I've never had to scruff my feral rescues, except 1 who tried to climb my back, and found them all lovely homes. My most recent feral kitten was 5-6 months old, and he is a foster fail ♥ A wonderful foster fail lol. A suggestion, introduce a human friendly older cat who can comfort and calm the babies(My 5 year old cat moo helped my foster fail transition in only 2 days), and also teach them that humans are okay. Anyways keep being cool :)
@leslie1085
@leslie1085 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good suggestion, though the only issue would be that any new kittens/cats need to be quarantined away from other animals. 2020 didn't pull any punches, and for the first time, I lost two fosters to FeLV and FIP these past few months. If I'd introduced another cat to them when I got them, that cat would've probably gotten sick and suffered like my other guys unfortunately did. Especially if the kittens are too young to get tested for diseases like those.

14 weeks is a bit past the usual threshold, but depending on their personality, they can certainly come around with patience and work! We had an adult (2 year old) mama kitty at my volunteer work that was completely feral. She took well over a year to finally warm up to us, but she did come around eventually and even got adopted! The main reason most shelters and rescues don't focus on cats over 8-12 weeks isn't because they're impossible to tame; It's because they simply don't have the room, resources, or people to be spending on one cat for months. Not when there's dozens of younger ones they can help in that timeframe instead.

Wow. That's a LOT of work you put in. Great job! It's also helping me understand the limits regarding an adult feral tomcat (full on feral, not a stray) that "adopted" me in August. He comes up on my back porch 3 x's a day, will allow me to hand feed him strips of chicken, gives me the "stare" with the slowly closing eyes when he wants chicken instead of the Rachel Ray I put out, and a couple of times he's come into my house and even laid down until I brought him his food, with the sliding glass door open behind him. I've stopped doing that (letting him inside) because I'm concerned about getting fleas on my carpet/in my house. The thing I've noticed is that he's like Groundhog Day. Or 50 First Dates. Every single day is like starting almost from scratch. He remains completely reticent regardless of how many times he takes food directly from my hand (before I just put down the bowl and let him eat out of the bowl). I would have thought that after a while he'd relax and get more comfortable. I think he's about as comfortable as he's ever going to get. I put out a heated shelter for him now that the temps are dropping below freezing and I've seen him in it a couple of times. He's a gorgeous orange and white tabby and it's a joy just being able to feed him and provide a safe place where he won't freeze or get frostbite. I don't need to pet him. One thing I've found interesting, and maybe you could shed some light on this -- when he sees me through the sliding glass door he always hisses. His ears aren't pinned back, and he's never tried to bite or scratch me, and it's ALMOST as if hissing is his way of greeting me, since he doesn't meow and doesn't purr. I was just wondering if hissing is a normal kind of greeting for feral cats, as opposed to hissing/attacking, or if I'm just imagining it. Again. Great job!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to rescue and save these babies. From what I heard, they were living in a very busy and unsafe place, they would have been in great danger and fighting for survival on a daily basis, not just bc of their environment but also trying to find food and staying healthy. TNR is the best program that has ever been introduced in order to not only save lives but to help them stay healthy and not to breed. I admire every single person that helps in this worthy endeavor, these animals deserve the best chance at life, they are innocent and just trying to survive in a world they did not ask to be brought into. I wish we had more of these helpful programs in my area, until then I will keep fighting the good fight and doing it on my own for as long as I am able. I have been rescuing cats/kittens for almost 15 years, it is an expensive and time-consuming cause but the most worthwhile one I could ever hope to be a part of, a "labor of love". Most people say that helping other people is better than helping animals, if that's your opinion than you have a right to it. However, in my opinion, people can help themselves more so than animals can. If we are sick, we can walk into an ER and tell the triage what's wrong and what hurts, we can walk into a shelter or church and say, "I'm hungry, I haven't eaten in 3 days" and so on, but animals can't communicate w us in traditional ways like other people do. That alone convinces me that animals need my attention and help more than anything else. You're either a "people person" or an "animal person", I am the latter and proud of it. Thank you again for helping to give these babies a chance at a good life and for taking the time to care.

I had a feral once, never saw her much until she went into heat. Had kittens. Terrorized our dogs. Taught kittens feral skills. They hissed a lot. It sorted itself out. Kittens went to good homes and my feral became a 17 year pet.

I’m so impressed that you have such great progress with 9-week old kittens. I rescued my first two in November when they were approximately 8 months old and the burrito method was really counterproductive so I had to take a much gentler, very food-based approach. They’re doing great now but still have a way to go until they’re like completely tame house cats. Thank you so much for rescuing and socialising these cats, you’re a star ⭐️

It's always so heartwarming to watch kittens transition from hissing & growling to enjoying pets. One of my cats was a very feisty kitten but as an adult she sleeps belly-up next to me every night and purrs when I walk in the room. To quote someone on twitter: to be loved is to be changed 💕

They were so adorable!! And dang, you handled them so calmly too. I think the soft orange girl was probably my favorite, but the feisty runt was adorable too. As were your girls, cute as kittens themselves ;P Thank you for sharing this, this was both fun and interesting to watch!

Trap dividers come in handy if you have trapped more than one kitten in a trap. Great trick I learned from my veterinarian........"divide & conquer"........separating feral kittens from one another for the first 3-5 days speeds up the process of rehabilitating them. They do not feed off one another's fear & adapt to human touch quicker & promotes the socialization process. Thank you for TNR & rehabbing feral kittens!!!!!

Aww, all those little kitties reminds me of when I rescued a little 9-week old tortoiseshell kitten from a tree. Fast-forward 6 and a half years to present day and she's been by my side almost her entire life. She's so adorable. ^^

you do a wonderful job handling the kittens. I brought home a family of 5. they appeared to be about one month old. The mother was tame and she had the kittens under my work dock. I made the mistake of letting her hide the kittens in the corner of my front room behind a lamp table so they did socialize the best that they should have. I hope you get the mother cat spayed before releasing her back into the wild. As Karen Carpenter would say " Bless the beasts and the children".
