This is a video in which volunteers from celestial zoo rescue retrieved 8 week old kittens from a storm drain and got them safe into a foster home. The local animal control said it wasn't their job to help and to just leave them there! But the volunteers rescued them and their mom anyway.
I demonstrate (with mixed success) how to handle them and start them down the taming road! Taming kittens born to feral momma cats becomes progressively more difficult and time consuming as the weeks go by.
Thank you to Kade, Tier, and Sarah for your efforts in getting these kittens safely out of the storm drain. Thank you to Jessica and family for taking on these tough kittens as fosters!
To donate go to www.celestialzoo.org or check out an animal rescue group near you. :)

To all who are wondering about the mask situation, don't worry, I know how to wear a mask properly. The woman that asked us to help with her kittens requested we wear the masks, but during the filming she stayed at a safe distance. In hind sight, I probably should have just take off the mask, but you know...20/20...or rather 2020...

@@tw7369 I mean. far as an animal is concerned, these large, hulking creatures are much more scary than the mere individual. They don't know jack from jane until a cruel or kind human stands out to them, by what they do, which will teach them to trust or not. There's no group mentality that 'humans aren't trustworthy'. Its more an instinctive response of an animal of a large, unknown or known beast that may or may not eat them.

These kittens are actually pretty tamed though. We used to have a momma cat with feral origin. We raised her since young but she never fully let go of her feral nature. When she had her first 3 kittens, she hid them in a box and taught them how to fight back when caught, and gosh she taught them well! If you cornered them, they would immediately lie on their backs and present all 4 of their clawing paws to scratch at you and protect their scruffs. There was almost no way to catch their scruffs besides wearing a thick gloves and just going in face to face with them. And yet, even when you had their scruffs, they would curve themselves up and use their back leg to scratch at your hand and arm. I had a real hard time just getting them out of their box. Best cats I ever had.

We took in our first litter of feral fosters last week, and leather gardening gloves were a life saver! We were nervous about being able to get a good grip with a towel, but I think gloves are great for newbies. More dexterity and visibility when picking them up, and you can transfer them to the towel easily for pats.

Feral kittens can sometimes end up as extremely affectionate house cats. My last cat was a tuxedo pattern that we rescued from the drive thru at a McDonalds where I worked at. Took her home and the rest is history. Mickey D was *spicy* when we first brought her home. She chomped my dad's finger the first time he tried to pet her. Fast forward years later and she's a complete cuddle buns. She was my baby for 16 wonderful years. Now we're trying again with another kitten that we rescued from a church parking lot when she was a few weeks old. We ended up keeping her due to the shelters being full up on kittens and cats at the time. She's still slightly feral at times... gets a wild hair that causes her to tear around the house. She's about 2-2.5 years old now and has mellowed slightly. She doesn't like being picked up but she'll come hop into your lap and curl up as she purrs. Does like to nip occasionally, but a quick gentle scruffing followed by some gentle massaging with the fingers on the back of the neck calms her down. She *loves* getting the top of her nose gently stroked with one finger. It's a good thing she's cute, because she gets away with a lot more than she should lol

Most of my cats are ferals. I have 10 cats...all were born outside and part of a feral colony. Patches was my first pick...and is feral. For 6 years now, she has lived with me with her three kids, Tiger, Booties (THE daughter) and Blacky. Tiger is the really brave one. When I have company, if he's on the sofa, he STAYS on the sofa. For two years, whenever my brother came over, Patches would run away and hide. Now, she is more like "oh, hi!" and she will take some attention from him. Booties and Blacky...no. Blacky didn't want to go with me...but since I insisted, and Booties was like "HELL NO!" she fought me till I overpowered her. No...I didn't hurt her, I was gentle. She was only 3 months old...so not ready yet to be on her own. But, you know what? She knows how good she has it. It took her a while, but, she came around to seeing it my way. Then, I added Tabby a couple of years ago. He was about 4 months old. Feral. I saw his mom hitting him, and I was afraid she was going to hurt him. So, I lured him into my kitchen with food, then closed the door before he could get out. It took two days. Patches was immediately like "Hi! How are you?" She's ALWAYS friendly to newcomer cats. (I used to hear her getting into fights with other cats, but, she doesn't want to fight, she's really a peaceful cat). Blacky was like "oh NO!" Booties was like "WTF????? Oh HELL NO!" She was swearing at Tabby every time she saw him for over a year! Tiger was like "want to be buddies?" Tiger and Tabby even slept in a box together. It took Tabby 2 days of hide and seek to go from spicy to "ok, you can touch me". About 6 months ago, Midnight's kittens had to be brought in because they needed help. Later, I lured Midnight in (I played the same trick on her that I played on her younger brother, Tabby). She was in my office taking care of them. Her older son, Shadow, later joined them. One of her kittens died. :( Then, Shadow died...he had something medical going on...he was SO THIN...and he barely ate! He was the only cat I had then that was indoor/outdoor. He would go out in the morning, then a couple of hours later, he would lay down by my front door and just quietly wait, patiently, for me to see him and open the door so he could come back in. Later on, after he died, his sister, Spots would do that. After a few overnight stays, I was like "why don't you just live here?" and she did. Then she had two kittens (she was already pregnant). She was young...and sadly, last week, her one daughter, Pieces, died. Sadly, even worse, yesterday, her other daughter, Scraps, also died. Pieces's death caught me off guard. I just walked into the cat room and saw her laying on the floor, dead. I could tell that Scraps was struggling, too. I tried to help. I REALLY did. But, she was already underweight...and I couldn't get her to eat enough to gain...I even resorted to trying to force-feed her so she would have a chance. Early on the morning she died, I make one last attempt she was still feisty, like she wanted to...later on, I got her and I could tell it was near. So, I took her into my living room and held her in my arms, told her that I loved her and that I will see her again one day and that it was ok, and I told her "I know how much you love your mum...and I'll take care of her. She'll be right here. It's not your fault, and I don't blame your mum for this. It's ok, Scraps. You can go now. Go ahead. Your sister, Pieces is waiting for you on the other side of the bridge." The, she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She is buried in my yard, next to her sister. (I HATE it when I have to bury kittens). Vader, Pepper and Boo still live here with their mum, Midnight. They will live here for the rest of their lives. Yes, that includes Midnight...who is now starting to become friendly. Spots is still living here. She will live here for the rest of her life, too. I will need to schedule her spay surgery. The story shall continue. The rest just hasn't happened yet.

I rescued 4 VERY young kittens that needed some serious help about 6 months ago. They were cold and soaking and it had been raining and wasn't stopping. Later, I came back for their feral mum. The kittens all took a liking to me right away and enjoy sleeping on my lap. "Midnight" is the name of their mum. I brought her into my office, then showed her that I had her kittens and handed them off back to her. Midnight was SO excited about that and happy to see her kittens were safe. She immediately proceeded to start nursing them right then, while I took the carrier I had her in apart. She just looked at me like "WOW!" I just let her take care of them and three of them have made it ok. Sadly, one crossed the rainbow bridge. Lil Grey was respectfully buried in my yard. Midnight eventually moved her kittens into a large Amazon box. Right now, they are all waiting for their vet appointment when everyone will be fixed in January. Because this was in my office...where I work...I am in there every day, so I can keep an eye on them. Midnight has never shown any desire to leave this room, even tho her kittens have escaped to the rest of the house. In fact, Midnight has done a lot of strange things...like sleeping by my feet while I was working. But, recently, she has shown a desire to take it to the next level. Every morning, when I come in, I have to stroke her. Only with one hand, she doesn't want me touching her with both hands, yet. And, unlike before, she doesn't get mad at me every time my hand gets near her. This is repeated at feeding time. Also, if I go into the restroom to use the water closet...she will casually walk up and look up at me as if to say "is it ok? May I?" When I stretch my hand out towards her, she knows that it means "ok" and she moves forward so I can stroke her. As I watch her tail, I can see her tail raising up and the tip of it moving back and forth as it curls and uncurls back and forth between an invented J and an inverted, reversed J. When a cat does that, it means they are happy. Midnight is a 3 year old feral. She just wanted to stay here to take care of her kittens. She ended up making it her home. Her three kittens that didn't die? They are here. Vader is her son...and at 6 months, he is BIG...a whopping NINE POUNDS!!! Most mornings, he will, at some point want to lay on my lap while I am working and he usually will sleep for a bit there. His sisters, Boo and Pepper are about normal size (6 pounds at 6 months). They enjoy the lap, too. Midnight's favourite things to do: sleep, often in the corner piece (this she started recently), she has also slept by my feet before, and she still sleeps in her house; play with toys, sometimes; eat; drink from the fountain; lay on my chair if I'm not using it; sit in boxes; lay down and sometimes sleep on the window sill (especially in the sun during the morning); hang out with her kids; get attention from me. Sometimes...not always...sometimes, old ferals CAN learn new tricks!
@NiceMuslimLady
@NiceMuslimLady 3 жыл бұрын
Update: Midnight continues to amaze. She showed me her tummy the other day. She doesn't sleep in her house so much anymore, she often sleeps in the corner piece in full view. She comes to me for attention more. Like I'll be on the water closet and she'll just casually walk up to me and look up at me like "can I get some attention?" I know not everyone has the time to devote to dealing with an adult feral, but, I don't do a lot of cat rescues.

Midnight is laying on the other chair, Pepper is sitting in a box and Vader is sitting next to me right now.

Talking to kittens is a good thing as well. They listen to your voice and tone. If you look into their eyes and slow blink this shows them that you aren't attacking them. It's important to keep in mind that aggression is because of fear. You are big and scary. From their perspective you want to eat them. Biting and sucking on a blanket like this is a coping mechanism. The kitten isn't attacking the blanket. He is latched onto something soft for comfort. Instead of Mama's fur he is latched onto the blanket. It's like he is sucking his thumb. The sooner you can start hand feeding them at least at first and make the association that you are adopted Mama, the sooner he will relax and trust you.

Chelsea I do TNR too. I put a small kitten pet carrier inside the kennel. The kittens naturally go inside because they want to hide from you. Then I shut pet carrier door and take it out of kernel. I hold for a while then I put them back in carrier and watch tv with my fingers inside door wire. This way I can talk to them thru out my tv show. I even take the pet carrier to bed with me if they are very feral the first few days. I sit pet carrier on my night stand where they are facing me in my bed if I watch tv from my bed. Every so often I take them out and hold a little more.

Over a decade of TNR work & over 1000 cats/kittens latter, I learned early on to separate the litter of kittens immediately for the first 3 to 7 days into their own carrier with a small cardboard litter box. They may cry for one another or for their mom but each will be quicker to bond & transfer their needs to humans. This prevents each one from feeding off one another's fear & easier to reach in & handle them. Usually the 3 day "switch" occurs & much easier to continue the rehab/socialization process.......at which point I put the kittens into a large dog crate together so they also learn to play with one another & continue to handle them.......and eventually into a small room like a bathroom.

@@amylk79 Divide & conquer! Not sure how old the kittens are now. The 5 week old feral kittens were always easy to handle......and each week that goes by becomes more difficult to rehab. Another thing my vet taught me (which proved to be true) is that once a kitten reaches the 16 week mark.....they are what they are & near impossible to rehab at that age. Those tortie girls can be spicy! Hopefully your kittens are still between 5 to 12 weeks old......In which case I would still separate & work with each one separately (maybe for a week or so) then put them back together. Best wishes & hope you success in the rehab/socialization.

We adopted a feral kitten, approximately 11 weeks old from our local humane society last year. The worker used thick gloves and speed to get her into our carrier. Kept her in my son’s room exclusively for a week and within a couple of days they were inseparable. She spent (and still does) hours in his lap. It took a few months before the rest of the household could touch her but with time, she’s become the most sweet, affectionate, talkative and interactive kitty. Don’t judge a kitten by their growls!

I have a few strays that wander my neighborhood. Since there are no coyotes they seem to thrive, but they do require some convincing. 'Feral' Stray: (Hiss) "I hate you hoomans and everything you stand for!" Me: "I have canned tuna." Not-so-Feral Stray: (Purr/Meow) "You sonuvabitch, I'm in."

@@CatvilleTNR yeah but I'm not very sure how to start. My country is not so outspoken on the issue and shelters tend to dismiss ppl who wanna help. I hope to start doing something once I finish my degree tho :) i hope maybe you could make a video on how to start, what kind of resources would be needed and all the basics 😊 of course only if you'd be interested in doing something like that 😊 best wishes!

I have dealt with a feral cat before, trust me that is not the only way to tame them treats will do as well there was a start cat at my mom's apartment years ago who had kittens I brought them into the house the first time around since it was winter and kept them warm, and i took the mother into the apartment grabbed her of course she scratched away at me but I showed her her kittens and she instantly calmed down and started to feed them that was after I kept leaving food for her the second time she gave birth to kittens she later brought her kittens to my mother's apartment so we took in the kittens and fed her my mom's cat and she fed her kittens as well if it was winter time is was in a warm place in the summer in a cool place so she was happy she had some fight in her, and I gave her baths her kittens baths and of course my mom's cats baths and tought them how to use the cat litter at a young age either way the kittens got to love taking baths so did my mother's cats at first they freaked out but they found out I meant no harm, I tried calling the animal shelter to help with the kittens but they said that they were going to spay and neuter then and put them to sleep but aftwr spaying and neutering the mother save the mother and put her up for adoption and I said thanks but I'm not willing to do that to the kittens so after they were old enough to eat solid food I went with my mom to the corner of the parking lot close to a busy intersection and gave them away to people who were willing to take them into their homes also gave them some cat food as well

Great advice! Also, only scruff kittens & only if necessary (like these ferals). Adult cats don't have the same loose, thick skin there like kittens do because they don't need it, they're too big to be carried by mom.

From experience I always close the cage door behind me until I grab the kitten to prevent the kitten from flanking me or kiting me. Kittens do not feel rescued, they always feel abducted or captured, so it's probably best to operate like a benevolent prison until the kitten or cat plays by your rules. After all it's your house so it should be your will be done, not the kitty's.

When you are holding a scared kitten, especially a feral one, don't gesture so much when you talk because those sudden movements only scare the kitten more. Keep everything slow and easy.
