The corpus luteum will form as a normal part of the menstrual cycle, irrespective of intercourse and the presence of sperm. It is responsible for maintaining the endometrial lining of the uterus for potential implantation of a fertilized egg. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum will degrade and the endometrial lining of the uterus will be shed. And the menstrual cycle begins again
