As an Italian American, all of this reminds me of what happened to our holiday, Columbus Day. There used to be parades every year, everyone celebrating Italian culture, great food, games. All of that is basically gone now, the celebrations are too controversial, and no one uses the name Columbus Day anymore. Yes and he wasn't born in Ireland. He was born in Wales I believe. He is the patron Saint of Ireland regardless. But Ireland has ten more. ( the isle of saints and scholars) . ( irish) I believe England has four including Saint George although their is a 5th . He was an Eastern European born man but established a monetary in Essex. Ordodox Christian.

The first two are also official bank/national holidays. It was called the island of saints and scholars because it became such a centre of Christian learning during medieval times.

The activist was doing something that should be called out more often: declaring a conclusion as fact without providing supporting evidence/arguments. "The union jack has been co-opted by the far right." How? What evidence do you have? A prosecutor has to show evidence, a doctoral student has to show their experiments, etc. Unfortunately we have a tendency to accept their conclusion and start arguing that the conclusion is wrong. Instead, force the speaker to prove their statement. "How do you know that?" we need to ask and, when they can't explain themselves, politely thank them for proving they don't have an argument.
