Their video on medieval castles are also very good. Explains the historical reasons for the castle's and how they were designed and why. Check it out if you haven't already done so!

I enjoy your reactions. I am a military historian whose focus is on the Vikings, though I do study the Napoleonic Wars as a secondary area of study. Professor Shippey is incredible!

What he was trying to say, is not that Ragnar Lodbrok was not real, he was their father, but the saga of him is not accurate......his story is a mix of his and a few other great Vikings life! Hardråde and William came to England at the same time, and was supposed to attack Wessex together......

About that question of Anglo Saxons. Who do think is the best king out of Alfred the first, his son or his grandson?
@RyanPetersonReacts3 жыл бұрын
I am obviously biased in this since my thesis is on pretty much Alfred himself haha so I do have to give it to Alfred, mainly because of the achievements that he accomplished during his reign allowed for his son and grandsons to be so successful and achieve a unified England. And he also did things with the law code and succession kind of stuff that allowed for a more stable government. I might have to make a video just talking about this question xD But also, I do need to do more research on Edward and Aethelstan :)
@robertoleary54703 жыл бұрын
@@RyanPetersonReacts a good choice. I don’t really know a lot about the era. But mine would either be Alfred, of course, or Aflestan due to the fact that he did unify England under his rule

I'm pretty sure Ragnar was real... I thought that was history, but that this story was probably or maybe fiction. At least he was the most famous, and then was he just a character in poems or memory passed on?
@RyanPetersonReacts3 жыл бұрын
It's really hard to say. It seems that Sigurd Ring, Ragnar's supposed father, did exist. Sigurd Ring was a King of Denmark, and many sagas talk about the Battle of the Bravellir where Sigurd fought with Harald Wartooth. So, I think with so many differing sagas referencing the same battle and same two figures, that they did actually exist. And then I think it is safe to say that Bjorn Ironside was also a real person, and he claimed to be a son of Ragnar, and we also know the other sons of Ragnar did exist except Hvitserk who is a bit debated whether or not he existed. So, I go back and forth on whether or not he existed. I think I would say that I lean more towards that he did exist, that he probably was a King of Denmark but that he has become extremely mythicized.
@svampen77822 жыл бұрын
Ragnar Lodbrok definitely did exist. 4 of the most Famous Kings and Jarls of Scandinavia all said they were brothers so it makes no sense to say he didnt exist. However how he died was fiction. There are no snakes that have venom powerful enough to kill a man in England so they would have had them imported which was not a thing back then. Like who has a ton of venomous snakes just laying around for someone to buy them.

The dude with the hair was borrowed by the show Vikings. After the failed raid on Paris, a handful of captured Vikings were getting executed. One asked someone to hold his hair out of the way of the axe blow. Then he pulled his head back and the guy got whacked. Of course, the Viking was still beheaded, but he did get a last laugh in first. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKTMiY2iq5ipgdk
