8:05 City dwelling Northerners yes but two points need to be made here 1. Catholic immigrants in cities overwhelmingly backed the Democrats while Republicans often came across as either protestant moralists or nativists. Lincoln rejected nativism but a lot of Republicans particularly ex know nothings embraced it and it would come back in 1874 and 1884 to bite the Republicans. 2. This is before the wave of urbanization and this is before white flight surburbia, so this urban population would be wealthier and more business or commerce oriented. This is always overlooked when discussing Federalist, Whig and Republican support in urban areas versus rural support for their opponents. A similar thing happened much later in the South as urbanization of the poor and suburbanization of the middle class flipped Sunbelt cities Democratic in the 1990s and 2000s after having been Republican since the 50s. Dallas, Tampa, Charlotte and Houston went through this process.

I will leave you with this quote from Fredrick Douglass, which further justifies the commentary you made around the 19:50 mark on this video. I believe this occured during the innauguration for Lincoln's second term: As Douglass would write 16 years later in “Life and Times of Frederick Douglass,” he noticed Johnson glancing at him with a look of “bitter contempt and aversion.” Douglass turned to his companion and said, “Whatever Andrew Johnson may be, he certainly is no friend of our race.”

6:15 The House has a 2-year election cycle because the founders knew that in popular votes the public could vote in people who were totally unsuitable for public office, but were popular back home. A 2-year cycle gave the government frequent opportunities to correct electoral mistakes. This issue is exacerbated by gerrymandering, where most House seats are "safe", and difficult to replace a sitting representative.

Actually at first the Radical Republicans were somewhat hopeful about Johnson. In fact, a few of them are on record expressing satisfaction that Lincoln was out of the way. Given their frustration with Lincoln’s relatively lenient policy towards the South, they believed Johnson’s hatred for the southern planter class would make him more agreeable to their plans.

Yes, and it brings up an interesting point on how they rate presidents, that was never there before. Whether a president's demeanor is as important or is more important than policy or accomplishment. Both David McCullough and Doris Kerns Goodwin, the two heavies on presidential history, were seriously disapproving of Trump. Most of it based on demeanor.That demeanor as we know was established by Washington himself. It's clear that the passage of decades tend to blur the proximity opinions of the past. It was interesting to see that after more than 70 years closer to the bottom, that Truman has skyrocketed to near the top. Can't remember where, but I even saw him rated once in the top 3, behind Lincoln and Washington! More important than those proximity opinions is how what they did may have changed the country for the better over the proceeding decades. I'll leave my opinion on Trump out of this. I won't live 7 more decades to see, but I won't be surprised either if Trump gets some rocket fuel toward the top himself.

ANY presidential ranking list is going to be political bias masquerading as history
@algini12
@algini12 Жыл бұрын
@@sultanofsick Not necessarily. Most presidential ratings I see go by policy and accomplishments. What they did, versus personality. He who has the most accomplishments, wins, or goes higher up the list especially as time shows the affects of what they did, sometimes decades later. That's how Truman went skyrocketing up the list, from the near bottom to maybe 4th best in some, and even 3rd best president of all time in others. Nixon resigned. This is an outlier blemish that;'s hard to overcome. He is rising now though after opening up China, and saving Israel in the Yom Kippur war, or staring down Saudi Arabia in the oil embargo. Trump has a lot of accomplishments that are ignored now. But watch out, he's going to rise on the list as they can't be ignored.
@sultanofsick
@sultanofsick Жыл бұрын
@@algini12 I don't doubt that the lists are made based on policy and accomplishments. But people are going to disagree on what constitutes good policy or accomplishments. I view tariffs protecting American industry and economy as a good thing. Some people see higher prices for imported goods and call it terrible. Some call it racist. By my metric, a president who does absolutely nothing for 4 or 8 years is better than one making "accomplishments" while ever growing the bureaucratic power of the state and chipping away at liberty.

Two corrections to your information. The presidential succession act of 1947 is the current act that governs the line of presidential succession, not an amendment. Lincoln’s appointments died with him.

I'm from Eastern Tennessee! If you've ever heard the story of the Overmountain-men you know why we were still loyal to the union in the Civil War. Its a cool story to look into if you haven't! I was taught in school that my town (Elizabethton) was technically the first city in Tennessee to fall to the Union, because as soon as the conscripted soldiers left, citizens took down the Confederate flag and raised the Union flag. The area also spent most of the war under martial law after an attempted train bombing (if I remember right). Also where Johnson died eventually.

It's possible. There are many constitutional questions about Lincoln's actions. Imprisoning members of the Maryland legislature so that they aren't present to vote on secession comes to mind. The key difference between Johnson and Lincoln isn't actually their plans for reconstruction, but the personalities and their political styles. Johnson picked fights and dug in his heels even when he knew he couldn't win in the end. Lincoln was far more adept at saying what people wanted to hear while keeping his options open for different actions later on. Furthermore Lincoln was actually a Republican and a mostly popular one from the North's perspective. While it's possible and there's legal questions about whether he should have been, it's unlikely.

As you said not every Whig became a Republican especially the Southern ones but also some in the North. On the flip side a lot of Democrats did in the North either directly or with the Free Soil Party as an interim affiliation. To their point about Democrats being the party of planters, this is only true from the 1850s onwards. Southern Whigs often were the preferred party of planters and even as late as 1860 Bell is getting a lot of plantation and river counties. Over the 1850s this plantation vote migrates to the Democrats. Democrats were originally the party of the up country south like NE MS, Northern Alabama, Arkansas, Central TN etc. Forcing these two together is what leads to brutal primaries in the Solid South era between city/ low country Bourbon Democrats and more up country based populists. Then you get into the mountains and you get into Whig country again. The mountain whig vote went to the Republicans, which is why East TN has been Republican since the Civil War. The up country and the mountain areas detested the low country/ plantation elites, which is why for a time Johnson wanted to hang the leading Confederates.

Worth noting I think, and you kind of touched on it. "Abolitionist" often gets conflated with "Against Slavery". Wasn't really the case at the time. They were two distinct views going on. Abolitionists wanted the abolishing of slavery, obviously. But also wanted citizenship for freed slaves. Anti-Slavery positions typically gave the view that for various reasons from economic (A flood of unskilled laborers with no money and prospects) to political (racial tensions and the like between former slaves and former slave owners) that the right answer was to send the problem somewhere else. Thus places like Liberia and the Maryland Colony in Africa. Republicans were by an large all against Slavery, but many of them were merely that "Anti-Slavery" position of sending the problem away. 23:15 nice words but I would argue that that is just another case of American policians prioritizing upholding the glorious Constitution over the good of the American people. Am I wrong? I dislike how often in momentous occasions like this one in this country's history that people in power have used that excuse.

Unpopular Opinion: despite the moral correctness/incorrectness of the matters of the time, one truth stands above all: the country hasn't healed from the Civil War yet, and that it the governments fault. While it was a tall order, they needed to secure the rights of freedmen, AND make the South feel like the government was being fair. The Civil War was a wound, and Reconstruction was the treatment. We could have healed with barely any scar, but we rubbed dirt in it and kept it uncovered, and 100 years later, we had a scar to rival all scars.

A lot of it comes from the problems of Reconstruction - it basically recreated the slave system in everything but name. Letting the South be part of governing again so soon after the war was a mistake.

The ends don't justify the means. His impeachment was completely baseless and was an abuse of the process. Clinton's was based on actual wrongdoing, but it was unrelated to his job as President. Trump's were both directly related to his role as President, and his subsequent acquittals in the Senate have all but destroyed impeachment as a check on a President by showing a major party will stand by their president regardless of how clear his guilt is.

the whole Trump affair has shown that there are not really any working tools in the Us constitution to hold a sitting president responsible and remove an abusive one, IF he is supported by his party. Not saying Trump was that (but only for the sake of argument) but it shows how helpless the US was/would be in that case.
