I took the S.S Catalina from long Beach in 71 with dad. Pulling to the dock there were big schools of fish around the ship. The orchestra played on the way over. Amazing

This is priceless. Make sure that it winds up in the hands of some historical society for future generations to enjoy. Priceless !!!!

This is fantastic stuff. Please post more. Southern California has a great history and it is nice to see how it was so long ago.

Wonderful stuff. Thank you. I'm an Island native and used to ride the Steamer as a young kid. Still get over there as much as possible. Anything old Catalina is OK by me.

Thank you for sharing this footage! It reminds me of the "old Catalina", especially the S.S. Catalina.

I used to dive for coins when the 'steamer' came into Avalon. I hear a mention of silver dollars being thrown - I lost my hearing from going too deep - loved those shiny silver coins:-)

By chance do you have any vintage fishing videos? I came across one years ago at Santa Barbra island but can’t find any online....

Many stories my dad told us about how he and many kids dove for coins thrown off the pier by passengers of the steamer.

Can a guy say, sail up to crescent city.. Pick up a friend.. Head back to So cal for the weekend etc etc? Curious how the traffic at sea thing works? Can you hunt for treasure still? Jestfully serious here

Really Great 1930's footage of the SS Catalina!

Great footage! Sadly they continue to litter the anchorages at Two Harbors with mooring balls. We prefer being at anchor, so this is pushing us out of one of our favorite places to sail.

They all must have been rich, wealthy, white people. Catalina is not a slave island, and never was. So that means, no blacks or minorities historically.

this guy doesn't even talk like native Southern California. what is up with the word Aloha ? Don't tell him that Hawaii is invaded by the Chinese and Japanese and the word Aloha is never used here. Why did I ever leave San Diego for Hawaii 25 years ago maybe it's because there's too many California wannabes with Wisconsin baby talk. However I did enjoy the video
