Ghent is a lavish Belgian city that is full of art, culture, and culinary delights. We spent one busy day exploring the historic sights and grabbing some delicious bites.
Our first stop was the Church of Saint Nicholas (Sint-Niklasskerk), a 13th century Gothic-style church located in the historic heart of Ghent. The unique blue-gray limestone that makes up much of the church is noteworthy of a time when Ghent’s industry was booming and could afford the expensive building material.
Just steps away from the church is the Belfry. We climbed up to the top to see an incredible view of the different sights of Ghent. Be aware of how narrow the walkway at the top is! The Belfry houses historic documents, and don’t forget to visit the dragon protector of Ghent.
Next we visited an incredible art piece noteworthy to Ghent, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece at Saint Bavo’s Cathedral. This monumental piece of art by brothers Jan and Hubert Van Eyck, and is of historic note to art as one of the first pieces done in oil and shows incredible realism. We stayed a while to take in as many details of this historic work as we could.
We settled down for a bite to eat at De Rechters, just steps from the Saint Bavo’s Cathedral to enjoy a local specialty: Waterzooi. This hearty, creamy chicken dish hit the spot on a chilly day, and paired well with a rich Belgian beer.
As we continued to walk through the city, we took in some modern street art on Graffitistraat, a street dedicated to anyone who wants to put their own graffiti legally. No two days are the same, so make sure to stop by whenever you are in town.
Time for another tasty bite, we headed to a historic candy shop, Confiserie Temmerman. This candy store had many tasty treats, but one of the most iconic is the Cuberdon, a cone (or face-shaped at this store) raspberry-flavored treat. If you like sweet, don’t pass these up! Walk around the store to see what other treats you might also want to take with you.
Our last stop was the Castle of the Counts or Gravensteen, a fortress in the city originally built to intimate the independent-thinking citizens of Ghent. Make sure to get the cheezy but helpful audio guide to get a better sense of what the fortress was like when it was in use. Gravensteen also has an incredible view of the sights we had seen earlier in the day, which was one of the highlights of the visit, which although short, was unforgettable.

It was a neat city. I wish we had more time because there were things we missed. We also planned on going to Antwerp but didn’t have enough time. Another trip to Belgium is definitely in our future!
