Madison, Indiana is the biggest tourist destination in southern Indiana, and for many good reasons! From a beautiful waterfront, boat tours, county museum and amazing 1800s era buildings, to some of the tallest waterfalls in the state, Madison is quite remarkable! This video hits all the major attractions and things to see.

My pleasure! I’m editing Vincennes at the moment. It’s such a graceful place and worth a trip. I went three times for good lighting in different directions! Hopefully it will come together well.

My grandmother grew up in Madison. Her family arrived there in the 1870s from Alsace-Lorraine, France. They owned a store there. She told me in the 1920s, when she was a young woman, the riverboats would dock at the end of the day, not being able to travel at night. There were able to board and go dancing.

One of my ancestors, John Booth (not John Wilkes Booth), was one of the 1st innkeepers that settled in Madison Indiana in 1809

It would’ve been something to experience riverfront life in its heyday. Indiana Territory was both exciting and dangerous, with as many risks as rewards. Fun fact: before he assassinated Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth was a big time celebrity. So much so, that thousands of his pictures were in homes across early America. After the assassination, most of these photos were destroyed and are now a scarce collectors item.

I try my best to make these town segments a beautiful snapshot. These are where people grew up, went to school, learned to drive, hung out with friends, or where they spent summer vacations, creating fond memories they’ll always remember. I want to bring back good memories, or encourage people to see it for the very first time! 🙂

When we still had our big river going houseboat, we loved to make the run down from Cincinnati to spend a weekend or a few weekdays in Madison. The Lighthouse Marina had a dock that easily accommodated our boat. It's an easily walkable town from the Marina.

Lovely presentation! I've been doing a lot of research on what places I want to visit on my cross-country road trip this May, and Madison has made it to the top of the list.

If you visit in the summer, Madison is not only beautiful with flowers, but has tons of fun events along the waterfront, such as the regatta! Many people will stay at the Clifty Falls inn, at the state park. That way, they can enjoy all the waterfalls, and not be far away from the town. Southern Indiana has a surprisingly huge number of other cool places, really! If you’re traveling across I-64, to St Louis, there are great stops on each side of that highway, but are pretty well hidden. I’ve published over 140 videos about them! Some people like waterfront towns, some history, others like beautiful quiet parks or deserted vistas, museums, or even towns that are nothing but a place to get a spa treatment and gamble! I’m going on 5 years of documenting them. I’ve started assembling playlists so people can browse the types of things that match their interests. Anyways, long-winded reply! Good luck on your journey, I’ll bet it will be a great memory! 🙂

@@AdventureswithRoger Thank you! I'm originally from Iowa City, IA, and given the what the last two years have been like here in Seattle, I began doing research on different places to possibly visit/live. I'm a professional musician who has to be near a bigger city, but who would prefer to live in a small town. I never thought southern Indiana would ever be on my radar, but when I saw Madison on the map right on the Ohio River smack dab between Louisville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Lexington, Frankfort, etc. my interest was piqued. Wow! Looks like quite a place! I hope to spend two weeks there in mid-May, while exploring all the areas around it. I will definitely check out your other videos.

Louisville has got a huge music scene, the largest Guitar Center I’ve ever visited, and a huge Music Go Round where I’ve bought many guitars and an amp. On Bardstown Road, where it’s very artsy and has a ton of clubs, they have Guitar Emporium, a gold mine of top end acoustics in a very classy showroom. But probably the craziest guitar store I’ve ever visited is at Jeffersonville, Indiana: Maxwells House of Music. They have themed galleries. For example, for acoustic guitars, they have a tent and campfire. They have a 70’s living room and couch to sit and play, as well as a bedroom where you can pretend it’s just like home, and you can play guitar on the side of the bed! Don’t miss the toilet where you get a piece of candy! 😀

The Madison Regatta is another famous thing that goes on there. I worked Safety and Rescue for several years. I was always in a boat in the 3rd and 4th turn. Which was under the bridge. First year I worked, a man jumped off the bridge, right in front of us! It was hard work, but we had some exciting times!

One of my favorite towns. My wife and I had our honeymoon at Clifty Falls Inn, we go to the Christmas home walk every year and like the Chautauqua. Plus I am probably the only person who has seen the Jim Caviezel film “Madison.”

I should look that one up! “Some Came Running”, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine, was also filmed at Madison, with at least one scene at Vevay. As the story goes, Dean Martin was incredibly friendly to the locals, signed autographs, gave balloons to kids, just really approachable and charming to everyone. Frank Sinatra was a complete jerk the entire time he was there, acting like the locals were beneath him, and wanting zero contact. As soon as his last scene wrapped, he had a driver speed him out of town. Local people still remember that! To me, Madison is the crown jewel of Indiana. It’s not just one short street, of well preserved 1800’s buildings, but a boulevard that spans the entire town, and every street on both sides of it. In summer, vendors rent golf carts, so people can see it all! Just a magical place. 🙂

You will enjoy the movie. The main theme concerns how we are a part of where we live and where we live is a part of us. A fact of life small town Hoosiers are well aquatinted with. Yes indeed this little town is a jewel. The park, the beautiful old homes, the history, the river are all so special.

All of southern Indiana is great! Beautiful, high-up places that overlook the Ohio River, historic places, beautiful old mansions, covered bridges, natural wonders, quiet and secluded places, caves, awesome places to walk, take in a museum, or get food at an old drive-up ice cream place. There’s also places down here that scientists say ancient Native American inhabited, up to 10,000 years ago, and many legends are yet to be found. To me, it’s one big playground! 🙂 I lived in central Indiana 41 years, and southern Indiana is where I loved to travel most. But Indianapolis definitely has great museums, my favorites being the World War 1 Memorial and Indianapolis Museum of Art. Fort Wayne has an awesome zoo that I like better than the one in Indy. And Shades State Park is like a completely different world!

@@davidrice3337 Better than average! I live about 5 miles northwest of New Albany, and have collected fossilized sea shells in the red dirt, a short walk from my house. But if you have a cave, those chances are even better. I’m editing a segment about Indiana Caverns, and they have all kinds of ice age bones, many are extinct animals. Do you live close to Captain Franks mausoleum?
@AdventureswithRoger
@AdventureswithRoger Жыл бұрын
@@davidrice3337 I wish I knew someone that owned the property behind the mausoleum: that’s a horrible hike up! Save those funny looking rocks. I know a collector that lives at Leavenworth. He showed me rocks he found, that look like sculptures, one even looking like a South American parrot. He took them to IU Southeast for analysis, and they said they were “all natural”, but would take them if he didn’t want them. 😉

I missed a good opportunity to film the trees blossoming along the river. I think if I did this again, I’d rent a golf cart and film the historic homes. That’s the real reason people come to Madison: a graceful riverfront and beautiful old homes.
