In Puerto Rico, a new political alliance called the "Alianza" will be on the ballot this November in a bid to change the U.S. territory's political status quo. The center-left Alianza, which brings together the Puerto Rican Independence Party and the Citizen's Victory Party, "is the first opportunity for the people of Puerto Rico … to push aside the corruption of the government right now and have the opportunity to build a new phase for Puerto Rico," says Ana Irma Rivera Lassén, running to represent Puerto Rico in Congress as the island's resident commissioner, which is Puerto Rico's sole member of Congress, albeit a nonvoting member. Rivera discusses being the first Black and openly LGBTQ candidate to run for that office, the Alianza's political platform, and how it is preparing for Election Day.

I personally know Ana Irma from my community work and women and workers right work in Puerto Rico. She is been a leader since I met her in the 1990, a dedicated and capable attorney always in the side of the communities and what is right and fair. The is no doubt that she would be a strong advocate for the people of PR and the right person to generate creative solutions for our historical issues in PR. She is the leader that brings people together to work for a cause and get it accomplished.

Es una alianza entre el Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana; MVC, que no favorece una fórmula determinada de status y el Partido Indpendentista Puertorriqueño, PIP, que favorece la independencia. Ambos, sin embargo, están de acuerdo en realizar un proceso de descolonización que cumpla con el derecho internacional, que sea participativo y tenga un compromiso vinculante de parte de los Estados Unidos. The problem is that the whole country won't accept the reality we can't be an independence nation. The entire proposal of each party involved won't focus the raw historical perspective. Unfortunately I have lived 53 years, and I have seen the behavior of every election. Corruption is always acceptable because government won't support the society because they have their own wealth interest. There are many struggles with education, energy, water supply, indefinitely unresponsive and unresolved. History? Popular party has been always compromised for the society, quite different from the opposite parts. 60 years founded but the opposition wouldn't allow the progress of the nation. What people are "blindfolded" is: 1. If citizens resigned from american citizenship, where would they could eat, housing, clothes, if we cancelled immediately everything from US? Also they lose all benefits US. Puerto Rico could never export food, neither sow food nor provision. Plus, the country pays the double tax in food. Travel? Forgot you no longer american citizen? Where is the immigration office, when you "deleted permanently" american citizenship? Military? No longer exists. Sovereign, how? Republic, how? Learn history to then act assertive.

Yes but most of the left leaning populace understand independence as the best option and have historically aligned with independence as well as most of the alianza (independence party and victoria ciudadana) with its key political candidates, Juan Dalmau, Ama Irma and Manuel Natal are all pro independence which I think it's key context to the headline. As well that most people have become disillusioned with statehood due to inefficiencies from the new progressive party (the traditional and core pro statehood party.) And are begining to opt in for commonwealth formulas as well as full autonomy (which are forms of independence) and those are becoming more of the norm with the emerging parties here in the island
