Historic Town of Sukhothai 🇹🇭 Thailand

Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. It has a number of fine monuments, illustrating the beginnings of Thai architecture. The great civilization which evolved in the Kingdom of Sukhothai absorbed numerous influences and ancient local traditions; the rapid assimilation of all these elements forged what is known as the 'Sukhothai style'.

The free men you mentioned is ‘Thai’; for Thailand after 1932. The Tai’s you mentioned earlier in the video (1st minute) are a sub-ethnic group in South East Asia called ‘Tai’. Would be great to add the correct version. Great video though! Would love to visit Sukhothai very soon

*Correction* At the time of Sukothai's rise, the majority of people in central lands of current Thailand were still Mon & Khmer. They didn't just disappear but in fact the indigenous Mon-Khmer people were assimilated to Thai and had mixed their lineage with the immigrant Tai lineage Thais (This is confirmed by nowadays DNA observation. Current Thais are the mix of mainly Tai and Mon-Khmer). So Khmer's influences in Thai cultures, language, and arts are never from outside, they're actually inherited from ancestries of Mon-Khmer lineage (Mon civilization is a predecessor and is very similar to Khmer's). 50+ ancient Mon-Khmer ruins in Thailand are proofs that the ancient Khmers (called "Khom" in Thai) are one of the major Thai ancestries.

You are correct but “Khom” is a made up word. No legitimate proof of any one identify as such. People coming together will lead to something different. Mixing Culturally, genetically and linguistically.

“Tai” migrations from southern China and settled in Southeast Asia is not longer accepted by historians. Evidence shows (recognize by UNESCO) the Dvaravati empire which predates the Khmer empire by almost 2,000 years shows that the language and customs were that of Tai. Jayavaraman 2 was a descendant of Dvaravati and build the first Khom style architecture in present day Phimai, Thailand then in the area of Tonle Sap, near Siam Reap. This narrative of Sukhothai being the first Kingdom of Thailand was written by French colonists to segregate Thai rule of Cambodia. Giving a defined “Race” separation between Thai and Cambodian lay a more favorable claim for the French colonists for Cambodia. People have been in Southeast Asian for thousands of years, name change, rulers changes, religion changes but the people don’t change. BTW, Sukhothai was attacked and burned by Ayutthaya also a Thai kingdom. If they were both Thai, then why would one attack another? Something to think about.

Khmer, Thai, Lao are one nation, they are siblings. because of religion conflict between Hindu and Buddhism . civil war happened from 1218AD in Khmer empire, Khmer empire split in to 3 Kingdom at that time Sukhothai(Buddhism), Angkor(Hindu) and Lan Sang(Buddhism) .

@@arwenundomielles Now I just found new evidence about Khmer empire collapse because of Mongol empire. from 1250 until 1310 Mongol invade south east Asia(Burma 3 time), vietnam(3times) Indonesia(2 times) but for Khmer king decided to pay tribute to mongol. about this tribute make Khmer empire chaos and civil war between Varman Buddhist dynasty and Varman Hindu dynasty and later Khmer have another dynasty become king in Angkor from 1336 he is from ordinary family very poor. during turmoil and civil war some Varman prince went to Ayuthaya and Lao when Trosok Paem become king in Angkor. during mongol invasion Tai ethnic from south china come to north of Thailand and Laos nowadays . older brother of Great king Jayavarman VII establish Sukhothai around 1200 AD but not yet independent and grandson of Jayavarman VII establish Ayuthaya in 1350 after ordinary man Trosok Paem becomes king in Angkor in 1336 and another Khmer prince establish Laos in 1352. so civil war it mean reunite between 4 kingdoms (Sukhothai, Ayuthaya, Angkor and Laos) during this civil war 3 kingdoms (Ayuthaya, Sukhothai and Laos) they have supported from Tai ethnic from south china. this 4 kingdom still using Khmer language until France colonial came to south east Asia

@@shovuthmen5478 about trosok praem you mentioned, that s why thai people said, Khmer after angkor wasnt the great Khmer king decendants like before. And as you mentioned Thai taught history of thai started from Sukhothai, founded by Tai tribes from china and married with Khmer princess. The ayutthaya area, there were many Khmer and Mon, beofre mixing with Tais from Sukhothai later on. In Thai history, difficult to explain why ancient Khmer collapsed and disappeared. Only mentioned the later Khmer which has no linkage of the old great Khmer.

@@shovuthmen5478 about languages, as i can read Thai, Lao and Khmer. Though similar pronunciation but Thai is the most unique gramma. Lao 80% similar to thai 20% to Khmer gramma. Though Alphabet similar shape but totally among them, but if you know one of these 3 you can guess other languages.

Ayutthaya is not the second kingdom of Thai people. It is the first great kingdom of Thai. Sukhothai was memely one of Tai speaking kingdoms/city-states at that time. But it was later conquered and absorbed by Ayutthaya.
