EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI has been on our bucket list for a long time (even before KYD started). As soon as we identified the "Heartland" as Season 7, we built the route and dates around this event. Due to our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly in a C-47 that flew over Normandy, it was well worth the effort to attend AirVenture, but being an "Oshkosk newbie RVer" was not easy. We would recommend attended this event, but wanted to share some ideas to help you get a jumpstart when you arrive by RV for the first time. Stay tuned at the end for our Rvers guide to AirVenture.

This video has a personal connection for me. My Mother lived in Long Beach and worked assembling the C-47. She was too small to work on the airframes so they had her putting gauges in the firewall. I only know this because my two sons were really taken with old warbirds so I took them on a trip to the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum outside of Omaha. As we wandered through all of a sudden my Mother broke down sobbing. I asked her what was wrong and she pointed to a C-47 that the museum was restoring and she told me of her time at the factory. It was still raw for her as it brought back thoughts of the boys that jumped out and never came home. And of the one that did come home and married her. She's gone now, but thank you for the memory.

I always get a bit choked up & swell with pride when I think about how these workhorses kept us in the fight and did so many things that had never been done before. Trish said it perfectly; "...the courage that sat on these planes..." is what won the war and changed the world. Her other memorable quote was "if you go alone, you go fast but if you go as a group, you go far" is the true essence of how evil was overcome. I'm proud to be an American! Thanks for a memorable episode!

My Aunts Brother "Skinny"was a tail gunner on a B-17 Fortress. Made all "25" to get to come home. Great guy, came home to work with my Uncle with farming and livestock. He deserved a peaceful life after all he had been through.

I completely agree. My grandfather was deployed as an airman when my mom was born, and his brother (my great uncle) flew bombing missions. They both came home (thank goodness), and I'm a far better person because they did. What lessons, what courage. I'm lucky to have had them help in the making of me.

Anne K thank you for the sentiment, but I missed the war by about 25 years! I’m just a patriotic kind of guy who recognizes and am indebted to the courage & sacrifice our military goes through every day. During WWII, some of those boys had never left the state from which they were born, let alone fly in (and possibly jump out of an) airplane. Many today don’t absorb and ponder history, therefore not learning its valuable lessons. Unfortunately, they may be doomed to repeat some of the ugly parts.

@@Jim.Hummel, I couldn't agree more Jim. For those of us who didn't serve, the next best thing is to study history and the sacrifices by those who did serve in the effort overcome evil. Too many young people foolishly would give up their liberties and freedoms one by one without realizing how much blood was spilled and precious lives given up to afford us the bounty we can enjoy today. One day I hope to visit this great event before my time is up.

Mark and Trish been following you for a while. Thanks so much for sharing this great experience on board the C -47. It was very emotional for me to watch. My Grandfather flew in a C-47 during WW II. He was a flight mechanic in the crew of four. He pulled gliders and dropped airborne troops for the D-day invasion as well as America wounded and German prisoners. The also dropped fuel to General Patton's tanks. He shared many stories with me about his time flying in the C-47 during the war when it wrote a research paper about this amazing aircraft.Their plane was even shot down at one point around Christmas and a family hid him and his crew for several weeks as they did not know which side of the combat lines they were on. I have been inside a C-47 at the Strategic air Museum near Ashland NE. But going for a ride in one through your camera lense was emotionally amazing. Thanks for sharing this ride with all of us. My grandfather has been gone for many years now and is miss him dearly. Those men were truly amazing and I know why they are called the greatest generation.

I'm a pilot of both full scale and R/C airplanes, I have seen several other videos from AirVenture this year however I must say yours is one of the best that I've seen. I loved the Air to Air sequence. Also the shot of the F-22, F-35, A-10 in formation with the P-51 was spectacular. It was nice how Trish put it all in to perspective, talking about the courage of the young men who flew and jumped out of these planes.

I moved to Chicago in 1990 and went to the EAA Fly-IN (as it was called then) in Oshkosh that year. What a wonderful experience that was. On the last day I was there, I bought a ticket to fly as the right seat pilot on a Ford Tri-Motor. The pilot in command did the take-off and handed me control at about 500 feet. I flew it around Lake Winnebago and brought it in on final, handing the controls back prior to crossing the numbers. There were 8 paying customers in the back, including my boss. I'll never forget that experience, you certainly brought it all back with your video, thanks.

Have to brag a little, my mother was one of the artist that painted the nose art on the fighters and bombers. Then my grandfather thought that was too risqué for his daughter to be doing this kind of work.

Jackie Lowe Cool, my dad was Army in Italy and my father in law was captured in the Philippines. He was a POW during the War and he is still at home at 100 years old.

I wonder if there's anyone else, who like me, talks to you as they watch the videos??? My first question was what or where is Oshkosh? (I googled that) Then I paused the video as soon as I saw the DC3s because a 'summer of memories' leapt up ❣️ Way back in 1958 and as a 6 year old, , before Air New Zealand was completely rebranded (it was then NAC) I had my first flight on one of those treasures which our national carrier flew with pride. We were going on holiday to Nelson (South Island) and I've never forgotten the excitement.

I fully respect those that went on those planes, and most definitely the ones that jump out of a perfectly good fly plane and not knowing what happens next. You absolutely should! If you enjoy nature, High Cliff State Park and Door County are very close to Oshkosh. Appleton, just north of Oshkosh, has a really neat downtown.

OMG! The shadows on the engine ( Named “Eager Eileen” if I listen correctly} of the Pilot’s hand signals out the window were amazing. but then at 4:17 you caught the swirling air streams off the props!!! I lost my mind! Amazing camera work and editing! Bravo!

I noticed the swirling air streams coming off the prop the first viewing also. That was beautiful. Many creators on KZbin have become very good at filming and photography! KYD's work is very good and I know it's not easy or fast to create any kind of video or photographic production. I published a non-profit group's monthly newsletter for 2 years and my time began at 10 hours a month and ended up topping 20 hours each month while working a paying full time job. But it was rewarding!

This was our 3rd year at AirVenture. This year was definitely “Slosh-Kosh”! Lots of open spaces because of the rain just before and during. The two years previous were jam packed with rigs and tents. Nice highlights!

I absolutely loved this video! I am a war buff and a Canadian!...thank you for showing the sides of the Canadian Aircraft in your videos..as so many forget the Canadian contribution to Normandy. We went to France this past year in the hopes of getting the Canadian perspective...with no direct path to the Canadian war effort..very disappointing for us. However, there is always a light in any journey!...we went to Vimy Ridge, in Arras France..from the First World War..and got to see my great grandfather’s name engraved on the monument there as a soldier that fell, but never recovered..my Dad was so proud to see the video of that! Thank you for all the attention you bring to that makes a difference!

My hats off to you! There were SO many opportunities to have a bad attitude there in OshKosh, and you demonstrated that you don't have to give in to that. Thanks for the great "how to live" example. I love aeronautics and airplanes in general. I had the opportunity to go up in a C-17 at Fairchild Air Force Base a few weeks ago, and watch these men and women who serve our country pack the pallets, put them on the C-17, and send them off with a parachute attached, then watch them unpack them on the ground at a strip 250 miles away- wow. There were MANY service people who partner with our country from foreign lands, and lots of great interaction; boy, am I blessed. Keep up the great work as you travel- God bless. Bob

I grew up a couple blocks from the airport in Oshkosh and used to watch the upper level part of the airshows from my bedroom window. The sound of all those planes going over brings back great memories of seeing the Goodyear Blimp, the Concorde and the Warbirds. As teenagers, most of us would get jobs serving food or ice cream on the grounds. Many people that live in Oshkosh also rent out their homes for the week too. Thanks for sharing such a great video!

We where in my dad’s Momentum a couple rvs down from you at Oshkosh. At the time my husband and I had no idea who you where, but that is the trip we decided we wanted to live in an rv full time. Since then we have put a ton of research in and your channel has been a huge help in that stepping stone of the transition. I have fond memories of going to the EAA Fly-in when it was in Rockford Illinois in about 1961 as a child of 6 years old, Thanks for bringing those back and showing me what it has evolved into !! Great videography ! My parents were members of EAA and volunteered there, mom got a mink coat award for her help, dad volunteered and hand lettered several planes, he was a sign painter, I was a 2nd generation sign artist. This is our 7th year at Air Venture. We had our KYD shirts and it would have been really funny to have crossed paths with you! You could have gotten a Press Golf Cart after checking into the Press Building. You were in the South West corner and made great choices! My daughters and i spent 3 of our 9 days there in the Warbirds Area this year. You must have many subscribers and could have had a huge meet and greet! Posting this 10 weeks after the event tells me not to expect that everything you do is in real time! Thanks so much for coming to AirVenture 2019 and we have loved your channel and learned alot watching you these past 5 years! Thanks for bringing us along on your many trips! I just found your channel a few weeks ago and have been binge watching your videos/channel! We fly into Oshkosh with our plane and stay with my in laws in their motorhome. This year we have decided we are going to buy our own camper since we are buying a new truck anyways. Hard staying and living by someone else’s rules for 8+ days when we are there. That’s how I found your channel….looking for camping ideas. I’m so excited now for our future experiences camping with a fifth wheel. Still need to buy. What a great video. I have connections to both aircraft. Forty years ago I instructed for Aero Dyne of Renton, WA. The airplane that is now Placid Lassie was operated as a freighter by Aero Dyne and I can remember sitting in her and dreaming what it was like in days gone by. And I just found out that one of the driving forces behind Miss Montana and the Museum of Mountain Flying passed away last month. The gentleman was instrumental in my career and me being where I am today as a pilot.

My grandfather was in the Navy and followed Gen. Patton across north Africa chasing Rommel. The picked up Patton's 3rd Army and went to Sicily and dropped him off in Naples.. The storms of the time made the lisp to 24 degrees, the ship rolled at 22 degrees. He has pictures taking water down their stack. It was crazy and you will never find a most courageous generation.

My dad and his first cousin signed up for the air force during World War Two. They both flew off aircraft carriers. We as a result grew up flying. Dad and George always had planes. I had my first pilot's license before I had a driver's license. I love to fly always will.

It's not normally as muddy as it was this year. They received over 5 inches of rain the day before the show and people started to show up. They even had to close the grounds for a few days and block RVs from coming in. People where holding off in the nearby areas to wait for the all clear to enter. Some years it can be very dry but this year was out of the norm! Great video!!

How fantastic to be able to take a ride in a Dakota. We have one in the UK that does all the air shows and drops out paras re-enacting the Normandy Landings. It was sad to hear that one came down in the US recently too, even ours had to make an emergency landing recently when one engine packed up! Keeping Living History like this alive is so important, I am part of many groups in the UK for living history and re-enactments. Thank you again for sharing, great air show xx

Those planes allow us to recall our relatives who were killed in WW2. I lost two myself. My cousins showed me their personal belongings many years ago. But it's all worth it to preserve the freedom we enjoy in this country. That I never forget. Always remember our bravest citizens who serve in the Armed Forces.

I grew up with the EAA! My first year was Rockford Illinois 1960. Before they moved to Oshkosh! Worked all the airshows up till about 1972! I miss my EAA Family! EAA # 34482.

Flew freight in a DC3 in 1998. Flew to Oskosh in a Piper Cherokee 6 in 1994 and camped beside the airplane for the whole week. One of the best memories of my life. Y’all are so extremely motivational! Thank you for every video that allows us to escape to a better place.

The EAA has a wonderful website that gives you a complete guide on attending AirVenture. Be sure to download the AirVenture app prior to going. This year the EAA did a wonderful job of restoring a semblance of normalcy after 5 inches+ of rain in 12 hrs over the weekend. The show runs on the backs of the over 5500 volunteers who make this possible. Also do not miss the museum. It is one of the best in the world. More videos of this years show are on their website. I have been camping at Oshkosh since 2009 and it is always a special time of the year. What an awesome video! I would add just a couple things from someone who has been there a few times. This past year-the one you show in the video-was a bad year, especially at the beginning of the week, for rain and flood water. The Oshkosh area received records amount of rain just as all of the campers arrived at the event. That made the dirt roads EXTRA muddy and the probability of big rigs getting stuck EXTRA likely. In fact, the campground was closed to new arrivals during the very early part of the week. Usually, as in almost all other years (well, maybe not 2010), the arrival situation is completely different. Everything about this year’s arrival was abnormally more difficult than normal. My wife and I usually get there a few days before the start of the event (this year we got there on Thu before the show started on the following Mon), and our arrivals are ALWAYS easy and stress free. And yes, bring that bike or small motorized vehicle-a couple of my EAA Chapter members and camp mates even made it into your video-they were on the green gator following a bus. It was cool to see them, but it shows that you want to bring some form of “small” transportation with you to the event. My wife and I always bring our bikes. Oh, the walk to the shower houses is never very far for most people. Seeing where you stayed (down by the South Gate), yeah, there are no shower houses near there. That is the newest part of the campground! But for most of the rest of Camp Scholler, and we have stayed in various parts of it, the shower houses are never too far. I hope that helps! Awesome! I so enjoy your Spirit! My Father was a B~17 Bombardier in WWll. Based in Kettering England. He was a part of the day and night bombing raids on Germany! Bombed the hell out of them and helped save the free world with all of his buddies! And he made it through!

I've gotten over my envious anger at you and want to thank you for the great videos and information. I have gone to many, many airshows and flown my R/C models in more airshows than I can count including the 25th Anniversary of the USAF at Shepard AFB, TX. The USAF is now 77 years old. Retired Vietnam Vet and stuck in California with bad knees, I still have Oshkosh on my Bucket List. I wanted to do Oshkosh the first year I got my Toy Hauler in 2016. But went to the Joe Nall instead the first time out of the driveway. I must use my 1/2 scale '66 Mustang on a Golf Cart chassis to get around and I knew it would be accepted at Triple Tree Aerodrome. You showed more of the Campsites and how to get around than anybody I have seen. You said there would be plenty of places to park the cart outside the show area and I figure there are trams that will take me further in. You didn't mention anything about the dogs but I know there is a designated area for campers with pets. My two little wiener dogs are happy to stay in the RV while I'm out for the day. The past three years I have been glued to my Computer for Air Venture Week watching all that I can see on the streamed cameras on the EAA Website. Now, I think I am ready to go before I lose all mobility. The only way I can top your Gooney Bird Flight would be to get a ride in the Honor Flight that takes vets down to DC to visit the memorials. That would be the topping on the cake. I'm sure you noticed that the EAA and Air Venture REALLY shows respect for the Veterans. I am brought to tears every day I watch the Oshkosh Airshows streamed live online. I had no idea you were aviation enthusiasts. In that case, for the boys, you should look in to the Joe Nall Week R/C event which takes place in April at the Triple Tree Aerodrome near Woodruff, South Carolina. I can give you the ins-and-outs of the camping experience there. Then, on the other side of the world, you should make it to the National Championship Air Races in Reno. I can also give you the ins-and-outs of the RV experience there. Thanks again for those Air-to-air shots. You are not a rookie.

My Grandfather could not qualify to join the army, so he went to CA from WV just to build these airplanes. The giant buildings they were built in were amazing. It is hard to fathom the effort of our nation post Pearl Harbor. Great video!!

Good video! We've been to Oshkosh three times now, and have always parked in someone's hay field right across from the Ultralight gate. Easy walk to the gate and about 100 yards to pick up the tram that will link you to everything going on. Two of the three times, it rained. But that does not deter the diehards! The last time my son and I volunteered on the flightline parking planes. What a hoot that was! Of course, during a show we were crowd control on the flightline with up close and personal seats! The farmer delivered water to campers, said you could tip him if you want, but you'd have to pay for a pumpout. Camping fee was $20 a night, no reservations, and there are several farmers doing the same, this guy was right at the gate.

Thanks Mark. Oshkosh is a special place where me and my ex-CAF father spent 4 days marvelling at the stunning warbirds and other amazing birds. It was one of the my best father son memories. All I have left.
