One of my favorite historical fiction books is Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. It follows a Hawaiian girl who is diagnosed with leprosy and is sent off to quarantine in the Kalaupapa settlement on Moloka'i. Timeline wise, it starts in the late 1800s when Hawaii was still its own kingdom.

Hi Glitz Queen, we read Moloka'i in my book group and everyone loved it, even the person who usually hates the book. This was a few years ago, and I still remember it. The writing is beautiful.

I’m not sure if you’ve mentioned this series before, but I really loved the “And I Darken” series by Kiersten White. It follows the story of Vlad the Impaler, but the “Vlad” character is a female named Lada. She is fierce and the character development of Lada and her brother is fantastic. Its been months since I finished the series and I still have dreams about it.

My favorite is Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie, it's post WWII and follows a Japanese girl who is half-black, being raised by her older imperial grandparents. It deals very heavily with racism and other hard topics like sexual assault and death of a loved one, but it's SO good! It was my favorite book of last year. Highly recommend!

Ellen Marie Wiseman is such an underrated historical fiction author! Her newest book The Orphan Collector is set during the 1918 Spanish flu outbreak and is phenomenal. She also has one set in a coal mining town in 1912, and another about a girl who falls in love with an Italian boy in the 30s and ends up in a sanatorium. I highly recommend all her books!

Just watched your video about you opening up about what had happened last year and your new years resolution. My advice only is that, don't try be happy, don't try to look for happiness or don't even try to manifest happiness, 'cause there's no such thing as permanent happiness but I do want you to have is comfort. Please treat your days comfortably, don't pursuit happiness because when your comfortable then you can relax, then feel peace and maybe that would become your happiness. Just have comfortable days. You're doing great by the way. Keep it up and keep safe.

I don’t think this is a YA book but The Girl Behind the Wall by Mandy Robotham is a historical fiction set during the time of the Berlin Wall. Also Mandy Robotham writes a lot of historical fiction based books.

Have you looked into These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, or The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell? Neither one of these are technically historical fiction, but they are set during the 1920s so if you want more in that era it might be worth looking into them. They all also have a wide cast of characters as well as writing styles that I feel like falls in the same ball-park as one another. To be honest, when I read These Violent Delights and The Last Magician, I thought that these three could easily be on the same recommendation list because they reminded me of one another.

The Golem and The Jinni by Helene Wecker is hands down my favorite historical fantasy series of all time. The two main characters are basically immortal beings and it takes you through so much history almost without realizing it at first because you're so invested in their lives and the lives of their neighbors and friends. I cannot wait for the third book to come out, Hidden Palace was such a good sequel it might even eclipse my love of the first one which is impressive since the first book quickly became my favorite book I've ever read. I'm trying to chase the high I got from those two books by looking into more historical fiction as it's not a genre I've read much of before aside from like Jane Austen novels I guess.

I hate history class but adore history itself so I LOVE reading about conflicts and wars through fiction (or true stories just not history books). I find that it’s all so repetitive though and there is so much WWII centered around Nazi Germany and not a lot of other things represented. I want to learn more about Latin American independence, Vietnam war, Korean War, Gulf War, the Middle East, etc. but it’s so hard to find highly ranked and well read historical fiction on any of these. Also like you mentioned in the beginning, I’ve read a lot of books on race and POC, but very few historical fiction and probably zero outside of civil war/civil rights era and that’s just in America. Thanks for the video!

I have a couple of historical fiction books that i really enjoyed (they might be aimed for a younger audience, but i still like them). 'Behind Rebel Lines' is the first one and it's about a woman that pretended to be a man so she could join the army and help in the civil war. She became a spy and ended up finding out valuable information. The second book that i recommend is 'Indian Captive' which is about a girl's family that got captured by indians (native Americans) and her family was killed. The indians took the girl back to their home and she had to badically become an indian. When she is faced with the option to go back with the white men, she has to choose between the indians and the white men. Im not gonna say which one she chooses because I don’t want to spoil it. Both are great books. Another book I plan on reading is called 'The Guns of August' which is about WWI.

I love June Hur's books, she has three YA historical mysteries all set in Korea (they're all standalones). Also, The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros was a favorite of mine from last year, it's a YA historical mystery with fantasy elements, set in Chicago during the 1890s with a gay Jewish MC. And if you liked The Last Night at the Telegraph Club I'd recommend Passing Strange by Ellen Klages, which is a historical fantasy novella also set in queer San Francisco. I coincidentally read both books close together, and it was interesting to see the different ways the authors approached the similar subject matter.
