In this new video from The Time Then channel we will show you Old photos showing the hardship during the Great Depression 1929-1940 🎥
Nobody could pinpoint the exact time it started or when it would finish. They didn't even initially refer to it as a depression. At worst, it was a recession, a temporary depression, a market "correction," or a blip in the upward trend of wealth.
It was not the Great Depression until the full significance of those heartbreaking years finally set in since there had never been anything like similar.
In hindsight, we look at it as a whole, as a tidy ten years sandwiched between the Roaring Twenties and the Second World War, possibly the most important ten in American history, a pivotal period that may have scarred and changed the country.
Later generations haven't always found it simple to understand the devastation it caused. Given how long ago it was, the Great Depression is just over the hill of memory.

The "Great Depression/etc" began when a NY butcher went a city bank to cash a cheque, drawn on his account. The guy was angry and when he went outside he mentioned to people that the bank had just refused him funds from his account. The word spread that the bank had no funds, which setup a 'falling dominos effect'. This information spread like wildfire, person to person, in a panic, through the city, then to other towns and cities, state by state across the country. From a small beginning the Great Depression began.
