I took this class at UCLA. Best class I ever had at the school. For those watching this video--Dr. Raia is also a very nice person

Could you share with us curious people what was Lecture 10 generally about? Many of us have wondered for years. My guess is that it was either a Q&A session or some sort of exam.
@boxvilleburgher94923 жыл бұрын
Dr Raia may well be the nicest person I have ever met, after my mother. I mean nice as in GENUINE. Not the superficial nice that passes for nice, especially in America. Dr Raia is also, frankly, a genius. There is no other way to describe an intellect so protean, expansive, and PRECISE. We all ought listen carefully to what Courtenay Raia has to say. Her ideas are mind-expanding and life-improving. Her book, THE NEW PROMETHEANS, is one of the great scholarly and intellectual achievements of the 21st century. THE NEW PROMETHEANS creates a new form, and will encourage others to dare - as Dr Raia does - to cross borders that are fanatically guarded by entrenched self-interests. THE NEW PROMETHEANS is about the possibilities available to human consciousness when Science and Spirituality are afforded the scholarly diplomacy that will, and MUST, encourage the desperately needed trade between them.

I'm looking forward to this class even more now.

To Wyatt's summary, I would add that Professor Courtenay Raia discusses people and ideas associated with science, religion and magic. She traces how each of these three branches of human thought develop and how they influence one another. By analyzing this progression, Raia believes we can more fully understand these aspects of society today and the impact they have had and are having on society as a whole.

May I point out to all the people arguing religion here (rather pointlessly) that she is lecturing about magic ... and shamanism ... and the sacred ... and religion as an aspect of human society ... as perceived and discussed by historians? The course is HISTORY 2D -- Science, Magic and Religion. You might learn something if you pay attention and stop arguing.

@gorgolyt - Hi there, if that's what you're looking for I urge you to give this twenty-hour lecture series on the subject a little more than 20 minutes of your time. I'd suggest investing in the first hour at least and maybe dip into other lectures in the series depending on your area of interest.

I like that definition because it engages, possibly inadvertently, with the aspect of religion that I think is most important. The fact that it is a man made invention and not the product of divine authority. However I would suggest that it ignores the role that religion plays in shaping the behaviour of those who follow it, more often in accordance with the ideals of those in power rather than any philosophical ideals.

SOMETHING HERE IS MISSING: Define Magic in the mythology of non-fiction vs. fiction... there is a division of how to achieve supernatural in the natural. These are defined as magic ( both priest & wizard { ie science & religion} & psionics ) A Priest "prays" for their spells, A Wizard uses verbal, somantic and material items for their spells. A Psionic Master uses "chi" and the force of mental willpower. Here we have 3 ways to achieve the same result making the 3 simply singular.

Being spiritual and being religious are different things. Dawkins and Hitchens know very well what religion is and that people are spiritual by nature. And they aren't against that in any way. take nuclear bombs for example... they were designed entirely for mining purposes... until they blew the minds of war leaders who saw potential. Many Scientists these days are hard at work at developing defense-only weapons, or harmless crowd control like sonic cannons. Science isn't what wars are made of, Wars just utilize science... much like everything in every facet of life and existence does. In soviet russia, scientists were forced to create weapons against their will, some escaped.

If you look up the syllabus for 2D, it is impressive in its coverage of material that college students should be aware of. In her brief discussion here of "magic in the US" I'm surprised she didn't mention advertising for products that imply they will make you attractive, popular, or happy .

the fact that one of those three can be proved with evidence is not relevant?
@jhellreichking6704 жыл бұрын
"Proved with evidence" is something that is, for the most part, an illusory experience of having actual capacity for a rational consideration, which in truth only extends to "as far as one can tell." For the simple fact is that "proving" that I am not merely a brain in a jar in a digital simulation is pretty difficult, if not impossible, to do. Without that, any sort of cetainty goes out the window. In fact, within "science" itself, the Uncertainty Principle seems to impy that perception plays not a small part in what really is. And if you read the ancient texts enough, one seems to get the idea that the "souls in clay jars" idea is in fact what they felt we are, and at a quantum level, the digital reality seems pretty obvious. i.e. plank units of time and space and energy. So my point is that too often, the religious fanatics of "Scientism" give more credence to their own fantastical ideas of epistemological certainty, which is in fact based in every bit as much faith as any competing viewpoint, than do the adherents of other systems of thought. Proven to your conscience is the best any of us can hope for. And if that is the standard, it is pretty simple to prove all three with evidence that exists. All 3 are reality. It is just a matter of how your consciousness arranges that heirarchy. . .though I would suggest that her methods of terminology are a bit short and shallow, though overall, a professor I would totally bang.
