This idea that public transport works don't supply "a return on investment" is a failure of their economics/accounting NOT a failure of the transport network. After all if melbourne didnt have a train network, would we build what exists today? NO! the accounants would say "it would never provide a return on investment!" but can you imagine Melbourne without trains?

I really do think that Mornington can become the new public transport hub of the Mornington Peninsula if electrified service was resumed. Given the population growth and the fact that it lies next to a few marginal seats both state and federal, I expect both parties to starting throwing large amounts of money (whether the return is there or not) at some point in the not too distant future. I would actually be surprised if service wasn't reinstated by the late 2030's

I would love to see passenger services return to Mornington. It was a bad decision to close it down. We spent millions on Penninsula link freeway, why can't the state spend some money on public transport in the area?

Great video. The Mornington branch is a very nice line I have been to the Heritage railway before it's very nice 100% recommend it. If they do connect the line back to Baxter that will be fantastic.

If anyone wants a train down to Rosebud or beyond why not re-build the line from Bittern following the old Red Hill rail trail then head east to Rye or whatever instead of some birdbrain idea about extending the Mornington line. The Mornington service should exist in its own right anyway!

Would be great to see regular Metro service down to Mornington. An express route from Mornington to Frankston, in tandem with the Frankston to Melbourne CBD express would be a great way of reducing road traffic, improving commutes, and promote more growth in the area. Surely this would be FAR more worthwhile than the current Stony Point service, though just imagine a dream scenario of Stony point being electrified, offering service linking up with ferries across to Philip Is. Would be a great way of reducing the ridiculous traffic jams on the South Gippsland hwy that occur when the MotoGP is on down there. Would be very cool to be able to public transport all the way to the island without having to use roads!
@MetroManMelbourne

A Mornington to city express would be great. For the mean time you’d probably only go express as far as mordialloc, and stony point would only get electrification as far as Hastings, but there’s no harm in dreaming!

Good video. Very informative, and as someone who lives near the Frankston to Stony Point line, very relevant. It annoys me no end that decent public transport in this area is neglected simply because of costing surveys.

Give the people on the Penisula a choice. A 20 lane freeway through to Pt Nepean or a railway line. That would narrow their focus.

Love your work mate. I live on the Frankston line and get the Stony point line to Baxter a lot. I'm a keen cyclist and ride to Stony point and sometimes up to mooraduc along the new Peninsula link trail. I've been on the peninsula preservation train a couple of times and loved it. But yes the way it is it's not really long enough. I needs to go to at least baxter.

During the rail crossing removal, the wooden building on the Cheltenham station platform has been moved to the Moorooduc (Grass Hump). I never understood why the building on the Baxter platform was demolished to leave an ugly sad looking station, it had little to nothing around it, but this is not the case now. I’m not keen on the Stony Point line being electrified even if just to Baxter,but if this means it’s rebuilt and the line remains open and possibly to Moorooduc as well then bring it on 😊

Once they sold off the station land which was right in the middle of the town the future of re-instating the line was doomed. The steamrail summer excursions to Mornington beach in the 1970's were very popular. Although the locals are pushing to electrify to Baxter, they have not tried at all to get the existing Stony Point service improved. If the crossing loop and signals were re-instated at Somerville, another Sprinter could run a 15 minute shuttle to and from there to Frankston in addition to the Stony Point service.
@MetroManMelbourne
@MetroManMelbourne 2 жыл бұрын
Certainly selling off the land in the town centre wasn't the brightest idea but even a station at the Nepean Highway wouldn't be that bad. Personally I think that the Frankston to Baxter line should be electrified but also upgrading the Stony Point Line at the same time.
@Techno-Universal
@Techno-Universal 2 жыл бұрын
In theory all they would need to add to the Stony Point line to double daily services is to add a passing loop at the half way point of the line and to have a second train running on the line so the line could seemingly operate in a similar way to a Funicular railway where there’s two trains acting as counterweights to each other in the cable loop! :)

I have some experience with this line and I can tell you the track is in bad condition and is just passable for a heritage line at present for operations and that is the section that is still open, it needs reballasting, and sleeper work badly. The Baxter - Moorooduc section would need a complete rebuild and some major infrastructure restored such as 2 full level crossings as Frankston - Flinders Road and Moorooduc Highway these would be priced at a $700k plus install a piece and add a further $4-6 million for the relay of track and building of a passenger station in Baxter, the preservation group will never be allowed onto the main Stony Point line. The set of points here are condemned and welded closed, and would not even be part of the signalling system on the stony pointe line. The MRPS surly don’t have $5-7 million bucks lying around so this section is in my opinion relegated to the history books.

Business cases mean nothing! Western Sydney Airport has an ROI of less then 10c inthe $1 yet they are spending $6B on that airport and a further $11B on a metro that includes 5 stops in cow paddocks!!! You dont need a degree in economics to realise that politics not $ gets railways built in Australia!

That’s true sometimes but not always. A business case is incredibly useful when determining whether a project is useful or not. Sometimes it makes sense to build projects with BCRs less than 1 though.

Of particular interest was the HUGE buffer use to stop locomotives dropping of the nearby cliff face into Port Phillip Bay!

Electric Red rattler trains would be hooked up to steam engines to take them to Stony Point and Mornington. My grandmother took me to see Every Which Way But Loose - Clint Eastwood in Mornington via a DERM from Frankston. A line following the old route to the Racecourse then aligning with Racecourse rd and the new estates down to Mount Martha would work..

These were known as 'E trains', and also operated to Healesville and Warburton. They were electric to Lilydale and Frankston, where a loco took over to take them the rest of the way. I believe it also happened a bit with the Harris trains.
