“Very accurate” - Not really. They also dialed up the danger levels of the radiation (like first-responders suffering radiation burns within minutes, instead of days), which inevitably ends up making the government response appear More incompetent in the face of (to the viewers) incontrovertible evidence of the plant’s danger. Additionally, that one manager of the plant (the one who’s in complete denial of the explosion in the first episode) was actually a heroic man who dedicated years of his life to clear the names of his subordinates, who were scapegoated into being the ones responsible for the reactor’s explosion. Nothing like the portrayal in the final show.

This movie was simply frustrating for anyone that knows a little bit of Queen history. This movie also shows how it can be a very bad idea to have band member as executive producers. Brian May and Roger Taylor made themselves appear more like saints. Roger Taylor himself was a well known party animal, womanizer and coke user. Ironically despite some of their partying Queen was definitely not the worst when it came to these things. The only Queen member who really developed problems was John Deacon with his drinking. Freddie Mercury was a very dedicated musician, according to their sound engineers and producers he spent the the most time in the studio out of everyone. In the movie it appears as if he is always late, and as if he never spends time in the studio. You can understand how a movie might not always be accurate, but the worst part of the movie by far was how they pretended as if Freddie broke up the band to do a solo album. Queen never broke up. Freddie Mercury's first priority was always Queen, he took two years to record his solo album because he did the Queen album - The Works in-between, and Queen did a whole world wide, The Works tour. The highlight of the tour was the Rock In Rio Festival, where they played for a massive audience of almost 400k people. Queen did well at Live Aid, because the band was in good form, The Works tour had ended 5 weeks before Live Aid. It is ridiculous to think that a band who has not played together for years, are suddenly going to steal the show at such a big event. That is basically what happened to Led Zeppelin, they performed at Live Aid, but they had not played together for years, and it was pretty bad. Freddie did not even promote his solo album, Roger did more promotion for his solo albums. Freddie's solo albums were not as unsuccessful and Brian May and Roger Taylor like to pretend. After Freddie's death they took some of his solo material and rerecorded it with their own instrumentation. So they obviously did not think it was that bad, if they still used the material. The way in which Freddie was represented as selfish jerk during this section especially was incredibly unfair and grating to watch.
@ConnorNotyerbidness4 жыл бұрын
Theres a reason why originally they wanted the movies halfway point to be Freddies death and the rest of the film to be the years that followed They were talked out of it because while queen may have stayed a good band after his death nobody cared about them as people.

I'm sure if there was a movie about KISS, Paul would come across as the dedicated songwriter without the prissy condescending attitude, Gene would somehow be the genius businessman without his officious arrogance, and Ace and Peter would be portrayed as alcoholic drug addicts with nothing to contribute.

Absolutely 100 percent with you on this. But even with the movie's selective truth telling of Queen's history, what's an even bigger failure is just how incredibly awful this movie is from every angle. John used have his roadie make cocktails for him while he was on stage. Not surprising as John is a real introvert so being on stage in front of all those people must have been draining for him. As a massive, die-hard Queen fan, while the film is entertaining and well acted, it does not do Queen or Freddie Mercury justice. The one good thing about this film is that it had brought a whole new generation of Queen fans, which I'm happy about, but if you want the real story of Freddie Mercury and Queen, then the film is not a good source for it. The real story of Queen is a fascinating and brilliant and certainly deserves better treatment. But what makes the inaccuracies so unforgiving is that both Brian May and Roger Taylor were involved, you'd have thought that they would have pointed it out and corrected them, but no they didn't. I really like Brian May and Roger Taylor, both as musicians and as people, but I think having both of them being executive producers was a mistake, they should have just been technical advisors and nothing more. At least John Deacon wisely chose to stay out of it (but that's because he's now retired and doesn't want to do anything in public). I may be wrong on this, but from what I've read, most of the fighting and arguments within Queen was actually started by Brian May, mainly because he was a bit of a perfectionist, and he often targeted his frustration at either Roger Taylor or Freddie Mercury, (mainly Roger). Freddie Mercury did get involved in his fair share of arguments and fighting, but more often he and John Deacon were the peacemakers. I read this somewhere, but I can't remember where exactly, so I could be wrong.

You can tell that a lot of this movie was Roger and Brian trying to paint themselves as the sensible, reasonable members that kept Queen together, and were the only reason Freddie became great, while John Deacon sat moping in the corner. It was a very sanitised and doctored story designed to portray as basically the Samwise Gamgees to Freddie's Frodo. Frodo may have been the main character, but Sam was the real hero who kept Frodo going. The thing is that they were undoubtedly into just as much crazy shit as Freddie was, and there wasn't a real break. They were still touring and releasing and recording Queen albums in 1985 when Freddie recorded his solo album. Also, John was done a disservice, as he was Freddie's best friend in the band but he basically fades into the background in the movie. I think it's a real shame that we didn't get to see a more accurate representation that wasn't afraid to show some of the more sordid details, but also had a more genuine look at the relationships in the band.

And they were the music producers, they likely didn't have final approval on the script itself. That would have been Jim Beach.

The movie also used "fat bottomed girls" performed during their US tour in 1974, while the song did not came out untill 1978 as single for the Jazz album, along with Bicycle race. Same thing with the We Will Rock you scene. Which clearly takes place during the 80's, while the song was written in 1977 and had a slidely different story behind it.

Queen stopped touring in the USA because MTV banned their music video for the song "Body Language", and there is a little known story that could have been intresting to talk about sort of a Rock VS Punk story: One day while recording the News of the World album Freddie and Roger met the Sex Pistols in the studio and they started fighting. Sid Vicious said that their sound (especially the albums Sheer Heart Attack and Day at the Races) were soft and "gay" so freddie called him "Simon Ferocious" so Sid tried to attack him so Freddie pushed him out of the studio. In reaction Roger wrote the song Sheer Heart Attack to prove that anybody can write a punk song. So you can say that Sheer Heart Attack is the only Queen song which is intentionally bad. But Brian liked the song so they played it live until 1982.

So? That's what odd about this film choice. There are so many comments about Sasha Cohen, that it's almost like most ppl know about the controversial fight to get this film made. As you said: "Knowing this movie", so it's almost like most ppl ALSO know it was plagued with historical inaccuracies. So, Nick gets mad? It just shows that he went for low-hanging fruit. It doesn't take away Rami's Oscar, or the many awards this film won. He's one guy, whose opinion of a biopic doesn't diminish the memory of Freddie Mercury or Queen as legends.

Same! I'm also reading a lot of stuff about Freddie being portrayed as a bad person and?? I didn't get that vibe at all? He just made some bad choices, but he did that irl too, it's not like he's portrayed as an evil guy, he's just a good man who did drugs (everyone did at the time, also every Queen member did them as well). I really didn't get the vibe. Of course Brian and Roger portrayed themselves better than they were I guess? But the movie wasn't even about them, so I don't see why we'd need scenes of Brian cheating on his wife or whatever. Besides there ARE documentaries on KZbin, that are meant to be actually accurate! People can watch those. Overall I liked the movie, didn't love it and it's not historically accurate, but it doesn't claim to be. I also liked that they didn't show the later days, when Freddie was ill, because I think that would have been disrispectful af, the media hounded him during that time and besides, he was a very private person off stage, so I think ending with Queens Live Aid concert was a good idea.
@lauraapostol3465 ай бұрын
Thought it was something missing in Malek portraiting Mercury so while kept watching it and then it hit me: Freddie had in his persona a sense of internal dignity, no matter what crazy outfit he might wear, he always weared it with a royal dignity. That dignity was lost when MAlek tried to portray him, Malek did his best but he couldn t capture his essence.

@Nosjjddjjd Жыл бұрын
@@hellothere4364 I remember reading that too. Your point about comphet is absolutely right. And even reidentifications are completely commonplace considering elton john originally came out as bisexual. Elton john!! And Roger (I think) said smth like how in the early days of the band, he noticed that the girls that used to pour into freddie’s dressing room backstage were now slowly replaced by boys. And ofc people point to his relationship with Mary to say he’s bi, but Mary herself said (in a documentary) that she came to understand that freddie was gay. Which makes more sense. All in all yeah, we dk for sure. If it was a preference or if he completely lacked attraction for women. But considering he named his band QUEEN, a derogatory term for queer men, I feel like he’d be fine with the queer label.

I binge-watch history buffs all the time, and this one happens to be my favorite--both parts of it. When I was born, Freddie Mercury was already famous. Unfortunately, I found out about him long after he was gone, but was incredible. My Italian friend introduced me to Freddie singing classical music, and he was one of the few singers with a magical range and talent for crossover. I don't think the film cashed in on that aspect too well. I watched this five times while in the hospital, and each time I loved Queen more and more. That is because (if you watch Pitch Meetings over here), it was selling their music more than the history of the band. I would have loved to know more about Freddie, too. I think Remi did an exceptional job with what he was given (especially dealing with the sensitive parts) and his Oscar was deserved. But I think he could have done even more if he had been allowed. He was upstaged by the music a lot of times. I don't know why they went PG-13. That's weird. I did love the Live Aid. I also cried a little knowing that Freddie got to see my favorite part of Wayne's World. I would have loved knowing a generation of kids like me born before we knew who Queen blasted that song all over high school campuses all over the world--and still do to this day. We still get to hear it on the radio all the time here and people of all walks of life still love it.
@marlowewillard4 жыл бұрын
I remember hearing some people say the relationship between Freddie and Mary in the movie was not worth focusing on. I'll be honest, I haven't seen the movie, but I already know some Queen history. And some people just don't understand how deep Freddie and Mary's relationship was. Even after their engagement ended, they were very good friends til Freddie's death. Freddie even left her a good chunk of his estate in his will. His reasoning for it was that she would have been his wife anyways. The man was absolutely affectionate towards Mary, and it even made some of his male lovers jealous.

John Reid’s story is quite similar to Backstreet Boys relationship with Johnny Wright, who was also managing NSYNC. In 1998, with NSYNC rising on the charts, BSB wanted to sever ties with Wright to better manage themselves and distance from their competition. Wright opted to stay with NSYNC, who was about to face a lawsuit with Lou Pearlman in 1999. BSB, who already negotiated out their contract with Pearlman, decided to relive Wright from his duties. Wright was an older brother to both groups, a relationship that still remains today. In 2002, with NSYNC on a break and BSB returning with the Never Gone album, they reconciled and rehired Johnny as their manager.

"The Prophet's Song" is actually my favorite Queen song. I actually think it is more well crafted than "Bohemian Rhapsody". I imagine that all the layered vocals Freddie did to sing in a vocal canon with himself, wore out the tape as much as the plethora of "Galileos" in B.R. Brian's guitar work was stellar, and I also loved the use of the koto in the opening and closing. It just doesn't get the love, likely due to its run time. Most people don't have the patience for a near 9 minute song, as evidenced by how hacked up "November Rain" was when radio stations actually played it, and to hack up "The Prophet's Song" to make it "suitable for air play" would be a crime.

We'd have to wait a year for that. There are allready a few vids up talking about where the series wander away from facts but the series was in general pretty accurate. But a subject matter that complex and still none disclosed and lied over by the actual powers in charge would be a bohemith of an undertaking for a ..8 hour? series.

The BBC scenes are even funnier when you recall Eric Hall's anecdotes about Queen being worried about how they'd sound after recording for their TOTP appearances - once the Musicians' Union were happy that a new recording had been taped, he just swapped them round with the originals!
