On July 7, 1937, an incident on Lugou Bridge marked the point at which Japan started full aggression against China. In the following eight years, people of both sides suffered unprecedented losses, leaving tens of million dead.
CGTN’s Dialogue looks back at that part of history, and examines Sino-Japanese relations today. We are joined by Rong Ying, vice president of the China Institute of International Studies; Gui Yongtao, an associate professor of the school of International Studies of Peking University; and Takesato Watanabe, a professor emeritus of Doshisha University.

On July 7, 1937, the Lugou Bridge Incident erupted, and the Chinese people united to face the national crisis, fighting bravely with their blood. 87 years have passed, and today's China is no longer the China of 1937. Although the mountains and rivers are now at peace, we must still strive for self-improvement! These numbers we cannot forget: during the period of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the number of casualties among the Chinese military and civilians reached over 35,879,000. More than half of China was trampled by the Japanese army, over 930 cities were occupied one after another, and 42 million refugees were left homeless. During the Japanese invasion of China, Japan blatantly violated international law and extensively used chemical weapons against the Chinese military and civilians, affecting 18 provinces with over 2,000 accurately documented cases, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties. The direct economic loss caused by Japan's invasion of China reached 100 billion US dollars, with indirect economic losses amounting to 500 billion US dollars.

All affairs within the Asia region should be dealt with by Asia countries. Asians must keep western countries out of their businesses, or you will face more colonialism.

I agree with the fact that Asia should do Asia, Europe should do Europe and the US the US etc. Everybody should mind their own business. But not only western countries colonized. China colonized Tibet, Mongolia, Taiwan, Manchukuo and Hong Kong. Indonesia colonized East Timor. Israel colonized Palestine. Pakistan colonized Bangladesh. Japan colonized the Philippines, Manchuria, Taiwan, Burma, Hong Kong, North and south Korea. Of course the west obviously has it's fair share but, colonization is not specifically a "Western only" thing

@@Kellah91Official You are absolutely wrong about China being a coloniser like western countries have been historically. For once in your life get educated through learning proper history and not being lead by skewered western MSM whose primary function is to purport lies to purposely misinform vulnerable people in support of egregious western government agenda .

forget about the past. Japan will be diminished in 100yrs. maybe it will become a very small nation, or US states or occupied by china or russia.

in japan, rapid ageing yet slow dying population is an irreversible trend, causing its society sinking downward. over half of its pop. are over 55 yrs. old ... this is genuine karma, reality reveals right before our eyes.

Nanking incident indeed it's a tragedy , but is not that "end of the world" sure Chinese have the right to talk about that, but that was nothing compared with happened in europe. And what happened in cultural revolution ? more people dead for futile things then any japanese invasion, in 2 sino-japanese war's. Republic of China was a great opened country, with president and catholic and christian freedom and modern, destroyed by communists so sad. Abe actions criticized ? lol what about China building artificial islands with sand in the middle of Thai and Philipines sea ? and blocking almost half of world ship traffic ? This is democratic ?

Rafael Nogueira oh, so a massacre of 300000 mostly civilian people, even holding competitions, is an “incident”? You are insane.
