History in the Making: David Cay Johnston on Why Trump's Arraignment May Renew American Democracy

On the day of Donald Trump's historic arraignment in New York, making him the first former president ever to be criminally charged, we speak with the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston, who has covered Trump for decades. Trump is said to face 34 felony counts for falsifying business records. The case centers in part on hush-money payments Trump made during the 2016 presidential campaign to adult film star Stormy Daniels. After his appearance before a judge in Manhattan, where he is expected to plead not guilty to all charges, Trump will fly back to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he will speak publicly later in the day. "Hopefully this is the beginning of a revival and a renewal of American democracy," says Johnston, co-founder of the news site DCReport and author of _The Big Cheat: How Donald Trump Fleeced America and Enriched Himself and His Family_. Johnston also teaches at Syracuse University College of Law.

The law conceals many things. The law is the Bill of Rights. In fact, that is what we think of when we develop our reverence for the law. The law is something that protects us; the law is our right-the law is the Constitution. Bill of Rights Day, essay contests sponsored by the American Legion on our Bill of Rights, that is the law. And that is good. But there is another part of the law that doesn't get ballyhooed- the legislation that has gone through month after month, year after year, from the beginning of the Republic, which allocates the resources of the country in such a way as to leave some people very rich and other people very poor, and still others scrambling like mad for what little is left. That is the law. If you go to law school you will see this. You can quantify it by counting the big, heavy law books that people carry around with them and see how many law books you count that say "Constitutional Rights" on them and how many that say "Property," "Contracts," "Torts," "Corporation Law." That is what the law is mostly about. ~Howard Zinn

I agree, our leaders should be held accountable, even siting of former presidents. The hallmark of a constitutional system is that no one is above the law. Unless, of course, they're conducting the wars of empire. This is why the United States refused to ratify the Rome Treaty and accept the jurisdiction of international criminal law. This is why no one was ever prosecuted for destroying the torture tapes and all records of who knew what, and when. This is why you, or I would go to prison if convicted of money laundering but the HSBC bank simply paid a fine. Obviously, it was the bank building that laundered that drug money, not a VP or account manager. No one is above the law. Unless you are Ronald Reagan and "simply can't recall" anything about the arms for hostages deal or the violations of the Boyland Amendment. Watergate and Nixon's impeachment proves that we will even indict a siting president for his crimes. But only if his crimes don't involve spying on citizens, ordering illegal bombing raids or using government to cull his "enemies list." And no one is above the law, unless your name is Bush or Cheney. In that case, you can kill a million people across the Middle East based on lies and manipulations. No one is above the law, and everyone is entitled to equal treatment before the law. Unless you are part of the Washington elite. In that case, you are entitled to follow the laws of power and empire, not constitutions and criminal codes.

No matter where you live on earth, what color your skin is or what your religious beliefs are, we are all the same immortal, spiritual, cosmic beings of light, vibration and frequency, who love and cherish each other beyond scope and measure when we’re back home together. Most of you, except a very tiny percentage of the population, have forgotten who you really are and where you’re actually from and that we are from one collective source (the creator of all) of energy in the cosmos. Some believers will call this reality or realm ‘Heaven’ or ‘the other side’, but whatever name you do choose to call it, the bottom line, it’s been our true spiritual home since time immemorial. Don’t fear death, there’s nothing to be afraid of because you are going back home to your countless love ones you’ve made over eons of time and space. It’s all the same to me but some people find comfort with labels and there’s nothing wrong with that I suppose. I do believe though, the word ‘Heaven’ has gotten a bit misused over time, because to me it’s not a place you can go, but a feeling of belonging and acceptance and love beyond your wildest imaginations and dreams and desires for the one, known only as, ‘I AM’. Your consciousnesses and your soul are one in the same. Earth is not your real home. The place your consciousnesses goes when you pass away, is all the same thing and again it’s where our spiritual home really is. When you do cross over, It’s simply a matter of closing your eyes here and immediately reopening your eyes there, It happens instantaneously. Actually it happens so fast that most people that have NDE’s (near death experiences) say that at first they didn’t even realize they were dead for a while. Even the ones that died on the operating table in the hospital, for example, have said that as they were out of their bodies temporarily and floating up near the ceiling, they were wondering who was on the table below in the room because they just felt that there wasn’t any way that person could be them. Only when they don’t get a response from someone in the room or suddenly walk through a wall is when they realize something happened to them. You have all lived many, many lifetimes through reincarnation, quite possibly thousands of times, perhaps more. More than likely, you have been every race, gender, ethnicity, color, even every species throughout all the billions of galaxies and the cosmos and lived from every time period going all the way back to the very first inhabitants of every planet that contains life. Again, you are immortal and have died so many times throughout the spectrum of time. Every time your soul comes back to a new being, you and your soul guardian, or as some people like to call them, their guardian angels, will pick your life’s blueprint of what you’re going to do and accomplish. You’re not meant to remember this most times, but there will be some instances where the source creator will let you retain your memories from your full existence and you’ll get to remember them during your journey throughout that particular lifetime’s span, for reasons the source sees fit. If your memories are removed for a particular lifecycle, the creator wants you to discover this throughout that lifetime and on your own, learning lessons from it. If everyone was just told what they had to accomplish or learn every time, they wouldn’t be able to properly get what was needed out of each life. The core learning for each soul and every life time is the ability to love one another and show compassion for each other. For some beings this takes a bit longer and they may want or need to keep coming back until it’s accomplished. For most beings though, I’ve heard they want to finish the lessons and be done with it for good, stating that life on primitive planets such as Earth, is just to hard and they want it to be over with. I would have to agree with that sentiment, life is hard on Earth unless you were born into a family that has everything and everything is done for you and on top of that, you were blessed with wonderful looks or talents that leave you never wanting for anything at all. It’s a fairly low percentage rate of beings this happens to but we’ve probably all experienced a small amount of success in one of our lifetimes or another. Please stop the wars and fighting amongst each other and start to love one another, as it should be. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience, not physical beings having a spiritual experience. Jesus said on the cross: “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”. Maybe we will be able to do the same one day, forgive our enemies. I will get some comments sometimes saying, “some don’t deserve it”, but that will be between, them and the creator. If you want any other perspective or guidance on this information, watch the programs called: (The Ghost inside my Child), and NDE’s, (Near Death Experience) testimonials. Most of these are on KZbin. There are many different channels on KZbin with different hosts, so try if you can to eventually watch them all. No two experiences are ever the same and all have different information that others won’t have. The more you watch and learn, the better of an understanding you will have of everything I have mentioned in here. Please watch as many of these videos/episodes as you can, because you will get a broader, more detailed understanding of what it’s all about and what’s to come. I promise you, this will completely change your life for the better and you will never fear death again. Some of you have said, “it’s the fear of pain” that you associate with death that you fear mostly and I get that as well believe me. Nobody wants to die of a painful or agonizing illness or disease, especially something as terrible as cancer for example that can go on for years sometimes. It will also give you a complete sense of peace and perspective for all things in your life. You will become exponentially more compassionate towards people and even animals once you learn the truth about it all. You will learn to love yourself first and foremost and that in return, will help you learn to love others better as well. I completely understand if you can’t and/or won’t initially except some of what I’m telling you. But I do hope and pray that you will try to expand your mind from what you’ve been taught. Trying to get rid of what you were taught since birth and accept something completely new and what some have called, ‘fantastical’ isn’t the easiest thing to do, especially if you like the way things are in your life and don’t except change that easy. I myself have been accused by my family and friends for being what they have called ‘Pig Headed’. I’m not that way anymore, I have completely changed since learning the truth. I’ve had some ask me about the situation with babies or young children and cancer or illness, disease and ‘why god takes them at such a young age’. Saying, ‘how’s that fair, they didn’t do anything to deserve that’ or ‘why would they pick a life just to turn around and die’. I initially had issues with all that as well, but over time and learning, it became clear that sometimes the life blueprint that’s picked, is not always about you, but those you choose to be born unto. A mother or father may need to experience or learn humility or sacrifice and yes, sadly the suffering for the loss of a child. I know it sounds cruel but for whatever reason, it was ultimately necessary and the creators plan. We’re not meant to know or understand everything, that’s essentially in the creators hands. I was a nonbeliever and hardcore sceptic when I first heard about this information but the more knowledge one learns and acquires, the more you will realize it all to be true and not just a ‘nice story’, as one guy responded back to me recently. Please don’t ignore this, it has everything to do with why you’re here. Some things are true whether you believe them or not. I would like to say though, that I’m not in any way an expert on the subject or claim to know everything, not even close. I encourage you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions, have a blessed day or night.

Given what has been happening to our retail institutions lately (e.g., merchandise locked up behind plexiglass; stores closing), I think the local cops should continue focusing on “street crimes.” However, I agree with David that we need to change the laws regarding white collar crimes. First, the law needs to hold corporate officers liable for crimes committed by their corporation. Second, I think that a life sentence in prison is not too harsh for someone who defrauds people of a hundred million dollars (and perhaps less). As an aside, the current top marginal tax rate under the Internal Revenue Code actually makes crimes more profitable for corporations and their top executives because they get to keep more of their ill gotten gains.

@@rafes8206 First, even in totalitarian countries, the criminal justice system can’t eliminate all street crime or white collar crime. Second, I'm a bit surprised that you agree with my point about putting white collar criminals in prison if you think that incarceration doesn’t solve the crime problem. In any event, I don’t think that incarceration is the total solution for street crime, but I was responding to David’s position that government should focus less on street crime and more on white collar crime. I think government can walk and chew gum at the same time.
