That was the state banner. The law authorizing it is technically still on the books, meaning it is still an official flag of Kansas.

I’m pretty sure that was the design of the Kansas state banner, which hung vertically instead of horizontally. The state wanted it to stand out more than the other state flags, the us Capitol rejected displaying it because of its weird configuration, so they changed to a regular flag. I do prefer it’s design, though.

Good thing that your ancestors are getting reparations for it by winning land and turning them into reservations.
