The glorious era of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom, when Egypt was the envy of the world, went out with a whimper. What came afterward would be a seemingly tumultuous time in Egyptian history that was characterized by political fragmentation, cultural change, rampant corruption and eventually, foreign domination. Egyptologists call the four centuries of so after the New Kingdom era the Third Intermediate Period.
The Third Intermediate Period started with the rise of the 21st Dynasty of Egypt, a time in which both pharaohs and priests ruled the kingdom of the Nile in relative peace. This though was the calm before the storm that would eventually sweep in from the east and change the trajectory of Egyptian history forever.

Two thousand years! So many yet to go! ❤ Cy! The rediscovery of Pi-Ramess, the site, and the finding of its disassembled grand stonework and giant statuary parts just happened like a dozen years ago, if I recall rightly ...
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy Ай бұрын
Yup, I think there will be at least 7 more episodes in the series, give or take one or two depending on if I decide to combine or spread out these dynasties into single episodes. Yeah Pi-Ramesses was discovered relatively recently, initially I think in the 60s or 70s with new parts of it turning up in the last couple of decades or so. There's still a lot more to uncover like the tombs of some of these kings from Tanis. Thanks again for tuning in, really appreciate it!

@Mikelaxo
@Mikelaxo Ай бұрын
Times have changed so much over the past few hundred years, that it's possible that a lot of the old traditions would have ended up dying out, and the government would probably be a very modern one, perhaps a democracy, with the royal family on the side holding little to no power

Can't help but think the text of "restoration" of the New Kingdom tombs of Pinedjem should read something like this: *"Year 6, third month of the second season, day 7. On this day, the High Priest of Amun-Ra, king of the gods, Pinedjem, son of the High Priest of Amun-Ra, Pinakh, sent the chief overseer of the White House, Payneferhir, to loot... uh sorry, I meant to say reinter king Thutmose (II)."*

I wish we could know how Oskoron the elder actually managed to get to the throne. I mean, we don't actually see the son of a country's worst enemy's leader become the king of that country without warfare, and I think if the Libyans actually invaded Egypt like the Hyksos that would've been recorded. Who knows what happened here... and given that Shoshenq I, the first king of the next dynasty, was this nephew, this means that his family regained the throne of Egypt after some time, which in turn raises some interesting questions.
