Great video Mike. It fairly took me back :) I could never see - and I doubt if many in my age group could see - the attraction of the discos. Obviously they attracted the ballroom and club owners because of the economic difference between hiring a band and a disco, but it was the introduction of the discos that sounded the death knell for the bands. Thanks for sharing! George

This is the way to do it. I remember when this documentary was originally shown. It is the greatest one ever made about that era. It features many entertainers' now no longer with us. Many people have been very critical about that era. You will find that those critics are not musical at all. There were real musicians in Ireland during the 60's and 70's. Back in those decades' you had to be a real musician. I hope that the showbands will be remembered.

Danny Pearce was my dad and I’m doing my thesis on the showband era how it changed the social life in Ireland

@@belindamac9935 would love to see the thesis. My uncle Gerry Duffy was in the Woodpeckers Showband. His funeral was today. 😒. I was watching this to reminisce about his Showband life.

Toti acesti artisti sunt minunati! The Drifters si Joe Dolan sunt favoritii mei! Joe Dolan a ridicat maiestria artistica la cel mai inalt nivel! Nu cred ca publicul, de oriunde ar fi el si din orice timpuri, ar putea cere mai mult decat a oferit artistic Joe Dolan! I love you, only you! R.I.P, uncle Joe!

@sliotharball Жыл бұрын
The same...In those days (when the showbands became popular the built these ballrooms/dance halls all over the country...No alcohol was served..They used to have what was known as a mineral bar.

It's a shame Louis Walshe wasn't around , he could helped to make some those showband stars big abroad especially England and maybe the States.

+Nancy Kelly That have the Country Band Dances all over Ireland now but not a patch on the Showbands. The showbands could play almost every type of music...Pop, Ballad, Jazz, Classical,, and were most of the time backed up by trumpet, sax, clarinet etc. These were talented musicians...when singing or miming to backing tracks weren't even heard of...
