This part of the Book of Judges has always troubled me. It was a very careless and frivolous vow that he made, and as to whether it was his daughter or a substitute offering he made, it is too open to conjecture. The rules that were laid down by God as to what was acceptable as an offering were very firm. There was, however, a procedure for redeeming an offering, or substituting an offering that was acceptable for something that was unacceptable. If it were me, I would rather have offered myself up than sacrifice my beloved daughter. The reality of the situation is something I hope to find out when I get to Heaven. What I can say is that if the girl, after hearing of her father's vow, still willingly submitted to the fulfilment of the vow, by her faith in God, I feel assured that I will be able to meet that girl in Heaven. She is truly one of the great women of the Bible.

I haven't watched the video yet.. but it could mean she gave up her life to temple service and was not going to marry and therefore no children to perpetuate the family line. Because God never required human sacrifice (thus Isaac was not).. but God gave His only Son.

The entired book of Judges deeply troubles me 😂 Some things on there are just so barbaric I can’t bring myself to read it again… This Jephtah guy with his “law of surprise” thing. The guy who gives his own wife to be(…)then after she is returned dead after a horrible night of being abused, he cuts her up and sends the bits to all the tribes of Israel… Then the benjamites whom nobody would give a daughter in marriage to, who are told to simply go and seize a random woman from the crowd of young women that are coming up to dance in shiloh. They go get whatever young lady they lay their hands on and carry her off to be their wives and that’s the end of it! The elders then say: “Do us this grace, we couldn’t find wives for them bla bla bla”. What? Do you the grace of having my daughter seized, r*ped and forced into being the wives of their own kidnappers?! God in heaven… All that sounds so awful to me I tend to avoid the book of Judges like the plague 😂. I love God and His word but ancient Israel is a complete mess.

You could also see it as how the Israelites were so lost and don’t know God no more that they offer their children like other kingdoms did, I guess almost like they lost the sense of who God was and saw Him similar to how they view the other false gods in the area

Very appropriate choice of Biblical events to current conflicts! Israel has been given the land by God, and although the blessings of God are conditional on Israels faithful worship of God, due to the legal aspects of spiritual ownership and separation due to rebellion, Gods choices are clearly still benevolent toward the people of Israel, especially those who seek His face. It is a very secure position when we know that God keeps His word, and is benevolent, even when we fail. Our faith is based on this benevolent generousity, and when our hearts are orientated toward God, we can ask Him to show us His will which can lead to powerful fulfilment of the will of God on earth.

Another very informative video. You do such a great job with the details of the stories, digging deeper than the Bible actually states. I believe the people at the time of the writing of Judges probably knew a lot of the background because it was common for the people then to share the stories orally. But today we are so far removed, and of a completely different culture, that we too often miss what lies below the surface of what is written in Scripture.

I believe the sacrifice of his daughter meant she would never marry and have children. One clue to me is when she requested to travel to visit her friends for 2 months and then she would return for her father to complete his vow to God. Why would she go back home and to Jephtah's knife?

Even if women served at the tabernacle, it never required they had to be virgins. Even the priests had wives. The daughter was upset about her virginity because she was going to be killed and would never have a chance to get married and have children. He mourning her virginity shows us that which she was concerned. She apparently wasn't upset about being killed, as she told her dad to do what he said (which was a burnt offering), but was upset she would never have children. This makes perfect sense as children were something women wanted back then. People want to whitewash the story because they refuse to accept a judge who would commit such a sin, and God would not punish them for it. We see Sampson sinning with Delilah and was still a judge. Even King David had a guy killed to cover the adulterous pregnancy, and David was a man after God's own heart. At least Jephthah kept his vow, and it wasn't to cover up sin. Maybe he is an influence as to why Jesus says not to make a vow with God. You may end up having to violate the law and offer your kid as a burnt sacrifice. Remember, God didn't always punish people for every sin. In the case of Jephthah, which law should he violate? He would have had to violate one or the other. Does he break his vow to God and not offer the burnt offering that he vowed to do or does keep his vow with God despite what it meant he had to do? The word used is for burnt offering and not the word used for giving the child in service to God, as Hannah did with Samuel. Jephthah kiled his daughter, and it was sad. We should learn from this story. Never again....

This is indeed one of the most disturbing stories from the Old Testament. What a position to put yourself in: break your vow, or kill your own child. I have no idea how it turned out. But such things do happen in life. Often we do not know how a chain of events that we take part in began, or how it ends. I hope Jephthah, and his daughter, found peace in the end. He was God's instrument; never an easy thing to be.

I love your video content. Please keep them coming. First let me say that I have always taught my children and others that Jephthah did not offer up his daughter as a burnt offering and had no intention of offering anyone up. Jephthah's vow to the Eternal was to offer an adult or child dedicated to serve God as Hannah did with Samuel. This is evident in Jdg-11:31 where Jephthah vows to offer whomever (the Hebrew says neither whomever or whatever) first comes out of his house to meet him. Jephthah would not have had a clean animal living in his house, so was vowing to offer a human. If Jephthah meant in his heart to sacrifice a human upon God granting victory, God certainly would not have been a part of it. This is key. The other points for this argument you have covered. Jephthah had only one daughter and she was a young virgin. In antient times, perhaps the only dream of young women was to marry well and have children. Now she would serve God as a virgin for the remainder of her life, never having children. In vs-38 "she bewailed her virginity, and then vs-39 "..and he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man." In vs-31, "as a" before "burnt offering" in not in the Hebrew text. Replacing "as a" with "instead of" as in the AFV version makes more sense.

Phineas, son of Eli is blamed in the Midrash for not stopping Jephthah for sacrificing his daughter. It's clear that he did his vow and sacrificed her. When you read first Samuel, you must read it carefully. Eli allowed evil orgies at the door of the tabernacle between drunken women and his sons, if Phineas was indeed priest at that time, he also assisted in sacrificing Jephthah's daughter. The Lord destroyed Shiloh because of the sin there. When the men went to sacrifice for their sins they hated going there because their wives would drink and be drunk and fornicate with the priests while Eli the High Priest watched. When you went to Shiloh, you saw the wine presses. Hannah was accused by Eli of being drunk, but she alone was a holy woman before God. God killed Eli and his sons in one day, they went to hell, and his line is not to be remembered, and caused trouble for David, Abiathar is descended from Eli. Now, because Jephthah did this evil, he died and only judged 6 years. Yes, he did it. This is why the daughters lamented for her in the hills. At that time only Samuel was right before the Lord, because Hannah was Holy.

And Jephthah said he would sacrifice the first thing that walked through the door of his house, which means he intended a human sacrifice, he was just sorry it was his daughter. He was still doing evil serving those other gods in his heart. I don't know why he is listed in Hebrews but perhaps for the time the Lord used him to settle the land dispute with the ammonites. During Eli's time sin increased greatly, and the Lord blamed Eli and his sons for all of it, so perhaps Jephthah was forgiven but still had to die because he was a murderer.

My take:Jephthah's Daughter. Ever read that story and scratch your head? Judges 11:30-31 "And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord: 'If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.'" As the story goes, his one and only child, his daughter, is who comes out. Two things we know: Jephthah is enumerated in Hebrews 11 as a true man of faith. Second, Torah prohibits murder and YHVH has a particular hatred for child sacrifice, the very sin Israel was sent in to destroy the Canaanites for practicing. Thankfully, the Hebrew behind this story offers a much better explanation than what most translators have assumed. The "and" conjunction above could be translated as "or," and, given the context of the rest of the story, and the unity of the Word of God, we MUST translate it as "or." So we get: "...whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be YHVH's, OR I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering." So, a lamb could have come out (as they were kept inside while young in them days) or his daughter. Jephthah left it to God what would come out. And, of course, his daughter comes out dancing and celebrating her father's victory. The context of the rest of the story is that after she learns she has been dedicated to God, she requests of her father two months to mourn in the hills NOT because she was about to die, but because she would never marry and thus die as a virgin. Jephthah's daughter, like Samuel, was dedicated to YHWH for lifelong service. For my Catholic friends, Jephthah's daughter became as a nun. Shalom. -Darren

The question is that if it had not been his daughter coming thru his door and it had been a man, a servant, or male relative, a soldier friend calling….how would he have been able to send them to the tabernacle to serve? No, i think its literally that she was the burnt offering unfortunately. Read judges 19 - the levite divided his dead concubine and sent her to the coasts of israel. Those times were very brutal and as can be witnessed today, are turning back to those times, even though many are in denial 😢. Brilliant teachings and videos as always. God bless ❤

I thought Jep's daughter remained a virgin as she was doing service at the tabernacle, not that she was killed. I don't think her virginity would be mentioned unless she was alive. And breaking your word to the Lord is a great sin, especially after a great victory. Which is something this generation has lost sight of. If it sounds cruel. Then don't forget that God sacrificed his first born son for us.. And Abraham was also going to sacrifice his son to the Lord as a burnt offering.

The letter of James says, For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. That implies the law was not always viewed as equal in nature among ancient Jewish culture, why else would James have to write this? Theologically even the Talmud is full of rabbis often reaching different conclusions. It is not beyond a reasonable doubt that Jephthah found some kind of loop hole that failed to be preserved
