Great video! In my opinion you only overlooked two key things from the early days of jailbreaking. 1. The key motivator for many jailbreakers of the first iPhone was MMS, or picture messaging, which Apple had decided to leave out of the initial iPhone implementation. 2. Apple initially had no interest in releasing the iPhone SDK to the public or in opening their developer program to individuals, but they were eventually forced to (leading to billions in profits and a hugely bloated App Store shelf) because Saurik (Jay Freeman) leaked the iPhone SDK to the public. Incidentally, my first jailbroken iPhone stopped registering touch events today, it is eleven years old.

I definitely will still try to make the most of what I have now and jailbreak it eventually, but even then I don't think my iPad has much life left anymore, especially now with most of my apps (especially the third party stuff) crashing more and more frequently and the UI slowing down to a crawl.

One of the main reasons Jailbreaking became a thing on iPhones was that when the first gen iPhone was released, it did not allow users to install there own native apps, instead relying only on web apps as a means access to third party apps. This approach turned out to be a failure as not many developers jumped on the web app bandwagon and users clamored for native third-party apps. When jailbreaking became a thing and thus allowed for third-party apps this put pressure on Apple to open the iPhone up to native third-party apps not just web apps. Thus a year later, the IOS/iPhone App Store opened. There is some dispute as to whether the App Store was planned all along but just wasn’t ready in time for release of the 1st gen iPhone or if it was developed later in response to jailbreaking with Apple basically reluctantly admitting it’s totally close platform model for iPhone/IOS wasn’t workable without actually saying so directly. The former theory argues that Apple intended all along to have an App Store for iPhone/IOS but it just wasn’t ready by the time of the iPhone release so they held it back for a year. They pushed web apps as interim options for app developers until they where ready to announce the App Store. The other theory suggests that Apple never intended to have an App Store on the iPhone but that jailbreaking and consumer and developer pressure forced their hand. Under this theory, Apple only intended select developers to ever be allowed to have native apps on the iPhone such Google and Facebook, much like how some select software companies where allowed to have an app of theirs included in MacOS (example: Microsoft with Internet Explorer for Mac in early versions of Mac OS X). Other developers and consumers would have to rely solely on web apps under this supposed plan. Now oince the iPhone was jailbroken then Apple, under this theory, realized their plan would no longer work and quickly developed an App Store as a way to keep the iPhone still locked down but allow for Apple approved native apps to be installed with the benefit of Apple being able to uninstall/remove malicious apps if need be. Personally, I give more credence to idea Apple intended their to be an App Store all along but it just wasn’t ready when the 1st gen iPhone was released. Though it’s interesting that we a now seeing a push by companies like Google, Microsoft, and Apple towards Progressive Web Apps (PWA’s) which are type of advanced web apps, so web apps as a model for installing new apps on mobile or desktop system aren’t dead yet.

Unfortunately I moved to android as there was a dry spell of devs making apps on cydia and claims that most of the dev working on jailbreak tweaks moved to android also not needing a jailbreak on android to do most of the things I was using cydia for ie Ifile itransmission, emulators even winterboard. I absolutely loved my 4s with 6.1 but that was the last iPhone I used.

from an outsider's perspective androids seems to let you do more but are not necessarily ideal devices to own
@vervetech93954 жыл бұрын
@@gamernation1829 That depends. I use both OS and I will say that android is a bit complex with lots of hidden features than iOS. But neither is bad. You just don't know how to use android or since you're used to iOS you expect it to function like iOS forgetting that it is a different platform. It's just like asking a Mac or windows user to use Linux. You can learn how to use android like how it is meant to be used in order to appreciate it. So far there is nothing on iOS that doesn't have an alternative on android. And even better, there are more apps and mods outside Google's Playstore. Android's open source nature means you have to learn how to make it what you want
@vervetech93954 жыл бұрын
@serendipity Because a jailbroken iPhone is the same as an android without further hacking or rooting. You have access to file systems, change the appearance and function of the UI, run emulators, connect several USB hardware. And with rooting, there's nothing you can't do. Even overclocking CPU, porting other devices UI if that's what you want, installing updates manually. So many endless tweaks

Good video. One thing though; Apple, nor any other company, can outright void your warranty for software modifications. Hardware warranty is a separate entity entirely from the software and as such Apple MUST prove that the hardware defect was directly CAUSED by the software modification to deny service. US: Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects against this, motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/yp3nax/jailbreaking-iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty EU: Directive 1999/44/CE, www.piana.eu/root/ All just scare tactics by big companies. Would probably cost more to take them to court than just pay for the damages but this is just another illegal practise Apple and other giants seem to get away with.

Most of the time Apple and carriers cannot tell if a device was jailbroken if you’re smart enough to reinstall a clean version of iOS before requesting any kind of support. I used a jailbroken 6s for a while with the app on the App Store you could download and it would jailbreak the device. Never had a issue with getting support. Even never had a issue when returning it to the carrier for an upgrade. Most people working the jobs tend to not care unless you actually have a device running at the time of inspection jailbroken software

Ngl. Jailbreaking your iPhone felt cool. You can finally have a file explorer, change the look of iPhone based from your mood, and basically feel like you own the phone. That is why Android encourages others to root their phones, because their operating system is an open system and lets people do whatever they want with the operating system. Because of this freedom, people with creativity can make cool mods to the OS, unleashing infinite possibilities. I have experienced jailbreaking an iOS device, root an Android phone, and Interop(erability) unlock a Windows Phone. It feels cool to be free from system restraints.

It was never very complicated but at this age (14) it felt so fucking cool to jailbreak it and talk about it in school. I jailbreaked some for friends and my family. Later I continued cracking things like my xbox 360, PSP 1004 etc... So now im 20, only use android smartphones and coding and doing my projects with electronics and other stuff. Thank you for reminding me this and for making me feel old now :D . Cheers
