Marvel actually helped make a live action Japanese Spider-Man (Supaidāman) spin-off set in the Super Sentai/Power Ranger series that follows the life of Takuya Yamashiro and his mech, Leopardon.

*F.A.Q.* • *Isn't this a tokusatsu series and not sentai?* - Correct. However, almost everyone outside of the niche tokusatsu fandom is not familiar with that term and it would be a dumb move to put that in the title because one, the length of the term, and two, sentai is a LOT more searchable. As a content creator, my job is try and get people on my content. While the terminology is slightly off, it still conveys the meaning to the largest amount of people. • *Was that cowboy Hiroshi Miyauchi, the actor for Shirou Kazami in Kamen Rider?* - Yes. *Corrections* • Although it was created by Toei, Supaidāman is NOT a part of the Super Sentai series. That was an error on my part since there is plenty of logged information about Supaidāman on Super Sentai fansites and communities.

Comic Drake i have a question. I heard that Jared Leto tried multiple joker laughs and we all know that his joker laugh realy is different from anny we ever heard. And that got me thinking the jokers laugh is something that makes the joker iconic . So that makes me wondering before there were live action adaptations of the joker how did poeple imagined his laugh woud sound like while reading the comics ?

Thanks for the clarification on the "tokusatsu/sentai" confusion, Drake, but I do feel a little more explanation might be in order for those jumping into this surprisingly sizable pool cold. For the record, "tokusatsu" refers to relying heavily on special effects; as one might expect, most toku tend to use genres that would warrant lots of fancy visuals, usually sci-fi and fantasy. (There's been a bit of an argument made that "Star Trek," "Star Wars," and other foreign properties in this regard could be considered toku as well, but I think only "domestic" product ought to hold this distinction, not that's it worth arguing about so long as the final show's good.) It's that "sentai" term that's throwing me for a loop, though: in the most commonly understood mode for the term (naturally, the one invoked by "Super Sentai" and its sister shows/copycats), it means "team" or "task force," as in a group of do-gooders banded together to stop a great evil (with martial arts and giant robots, the way nature intended). Our Japanese spider-friend may be a great hero working alongside a scientific task force, but strictly speaking, I'd say he's more of a one-man army when it comes to actual field work. If there were, say, five of him running around, then the "team" term might apply. I don't mean to sound pedantic here, but after Shout Factory did a crackerjack job drilling the meaning of "sentai" into my head over the past few years, I just want to make sure we're still using a reliable measuring stick.

Minor correction for those not in the know: Spiderman is not considered part of the Super Sentai Series but it was an influence on it. Spiderman's robot Leopardon was the earliest example of Toei incorporating a giant fighting robot into their superhero shows but thats really the extent of the relationship. While Spiderman isn't a part of the Super Sentai series it would be fair to say that the series and its american counterpart Power Rangers wouldn't exist as we know it today if not for Marvel and by extension Spiderman, following the success of this show there were plans to produce another show alongside Marvel about a team of international heroes in the vein of Captain America that eventually evolved into the 3rd Super Sentai Series Battle Fever J after Marvel backed out of the project and it became a pure Toei property. Battle Fever was unsurprisingly also the first Sentai Series to feature giant fighting robot piloted by the heroes.

not sure how accurate this information is but i've see a few places mention that Battle Fever J is apart of the Marvel Multiverse, being Earth-79203. which is pretty neat if true and shows the connection between Marvel and Super Sentai becoming it's own thing.

I find it hilarious that Spider-Man (and by extension the marvel multiverse) is loosely connected to Super Sentai. If I'm not mistaken it's even still loosely in marvel multiverse continuity. What makes this more interesting is that the American Counterpart Power Rangers is loosely connected to DC. There was a Power Rangers and DC crossover comic, and the Power Rangers have crossed over with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The TMNT have crossed over with DC so again Power Rangers is loosely connected to DC. That's hilarious Marvel gets Super Sentai and DC gets Power Rangers.

Fun part on production side, the action scenes such as wall crawling were not pre-planned but figured out on the spot 7:50 "Leopardon suits being stolen." Taking look around in Jp site, I see that as ONE of theory, but also lack of replacement parts is seen as a reason. Two biggest issue with Leopardon were that it was very cumbersome to move and it lacked durability, which lead to shortening of screentime for the mech and ironically, lead to fan theory of Leopardon being the strongest. (defeated one enemy in under ten seconds of showing up in ep 18) Megazords in later sentai series in-cooperate that element into account up to Gaoranger where CGI took over most of suits actions.

You forgot to mention that the Japanese TV Company who made the live action Spider-man TV movie were deciding between three superheroes to purchase the license. It was either going to be Marvel's 3D Man, Moon Knight, or Spider-Man. Of course in the end though they went with Spider-man. I'm pretty sure they only wanted the rights to Moon Knight since they consider Moon Knight a "Gekko Kamen" ripoff in Japan. "Gekko Kamen" in English is "Moonlight Mask". Marvel's relationship with Super Sentai goes even deeper than that. After Sentai was cancelled after the second series, JAKQ, Spider-Man was produced. After the success of Spider-Man in Japan, Toei and Marvel worked on a Japanese version of Captain America, which evolved into reviving Sentai as Super Sentai and Battle Fever J was created in 1979. Battle Fever J was an international Super Sentai team (all played by Japanese actors, even for the African ranger), with it's leader being Battle Japan, the red ranger. They even adapted Marvel's Miss America character into the pink ranger, Miss America. Marvel and Toei would go on to collaborate for the next two Sentai series, but with little to no influence from Marvel. Stan Lee did try to adapt the 1981 series, Sun Vulcan, into America similar to Power Rangers, but TV executives rejected it and it would take a decade until Haim Saban successfully got the concept green-lit.

8:33 - I think it has to do less than with The Inheritors knowing of the Leopardon sword's great power than the American comic cliche of the comic writers disliking Godzilla-style monsters and robots and just disposing said giants as quickly as possible to return to regular comic book story characters.

YEAH YEAH YEAH! WOW! Thanks for the great video Drake, I'm a huge fan of 70's tokusatsu and this made me so happy!! BTW, the guitar playing gunslinging cowboy narcotics detective is played by Hiroshi Miyauchi, who also played many of the most bad-ass japanese heroes ever, like Kamen Rider V3, Kaiketsu Zubat and the Blue Ranger in the very first Sentai series, Goranger.

Since Drake covered Takuya Yamashiro, perhaps he should try covering the other Japanese Spider-man, Yu Komori. But I doubt so since his story is quite depressing from what I read from the Marvel wiki. So depressing that he didn't appear in the Spiderverse event beyond a mention.

9:32 "No idea how they did some of those wall crawling." And even more scary part is that they shot most of those stunts once a week, with no SFX (just rope work, trampoline and some reversed footage), and with no pre-shooting discussions (apparently the crews came up with more ingenious ideas when they had to do it on the fly) If you doubt me, translate the following link yourself. togetter.com/li/1111634

Given that he is apparently slated to be in the second Spider-Verse movie, I hope that he both has a prominent role like Peni, Noir and Spider-Ham and I hope that this makes the character popular enough to where Marvel tries to do more with him. So far he only shows up in Spider-Verse crossovers and even then he only ever uses Leopardon which Leopardon is cool but its like they assume he's useless without it when he can fight on his own. I would really just like to see more done with him, he's a cool and unique version of Spider-Man and given that a comic or cartoon wouldn't have the same limitations as a live action series, you wouldn't have to reuse footage or use cheap props so we could see more impressive moves from Takuya and Leopardon could actually be challenged since he only one shot everyone because they didn't have the suit to film fight scenes. Hopefully his role in the next movie is great so people want to see more so Marvel is more inclined to do more.
