My favorite Kamen Rider, forever. I doubt there is another Tokusatsu show that i would love more than Kuuga. Story, character developing, the mysteries, power-up sequence, philosophy, fight scenes, life lessons... everything is kept as realistic as possible. And one the rare shows where police is actually helpful. Godai got the power to fight, but it's Ichijou who set Godai in his way and support him with everything he can. A second rider without ability to transform and even more than that. Ichijou taught Godai and myself a powerful lesson: Even without gifted power, you can still fight in your own way, and when doing so, never ever be haft-hearted and focus on what is the right thing to do. I admire Godai Yusuke as Kuuga, and Ichijou as a selfless and dutiful police officer. Kuuga true power is these two man combined.

The Grongi are probably the only villain group/organization in tokusatsu that actually terrifies me. Unlike past and most future villains in Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Power Rangers, etc., they didn't really have a motive for most of their rampages. Think about it: Shocker, from the original series, killed people in a quest for world domination. Gorgom, from Kamen Rider BLACK, killed people in a quest for world domination. The Roidmude, from Drive, were rebelling against mankind. The Grongi? They kill people for the LOLs. For sport. They kill en mass because they have power, and they're bored. They're a roving band of serial killers trying to one-up each other. They truly are, in every sense of the word, monsters.

A lot of the early Heisei villains are terrifying just by their means of killing, from the Grongi, to the Lords, Mirror Monsters, Orphenoch and so on. While definitely became tamer, the Neo Heisei era (excluding Amazons) still kept the dark tone every now and then, like Kiyoto Maki, Helheim, Dan Kuroto before he became a meme god and Sento getting PTSD.

The ending was actually pretty good. The sways the scenes played out made you think that godai died in the final battle and that 3 months later its about the side characters moving past all the grongi news

I love how little kuuga gives away sometimes. You hear about yusuke's parents, ichijou's dad, etc. but you don't NEED to know exactly what happened to them to just get it. You know how these things have affected the characters but don't need to be explicitly explained

For the bike fight, what I imagine the reason for staying on the bike rather than getting off is that if the monster attempts to speed away (which was the ability of this one) then Kuuga can easily chase after it.

Kuuga's still my favorite heisei KR. It's a very pure show. It's just trying something new on the foundation of an established genre, so it had nothing to lose. On the other hand, it's trying to appeal to the most number of people, so it kept itself simple and accessible. But what I like the most about the show is that it's not even thinking about merchandising or a self-image that's relevant to the current audience. It just ran with it and did a good job with what it had. And I LOVE that it didn't give a fuck about Daguva. He just showed up for like 2 minutes for Kuuga to beat his ass.

When I first saw Kuuga, I was reeeeally pulling myself to continue watching it, but then I began to love the show's simplicity. Kuuga's first few transformations where awesome (ie he punches/kicks the enemy as his armor starts to form piece by piece), his bike fights during several episodes were amazing, and his armor is so cool because it captures the Kamen Rider feel without being too over-designed like the later Riders. Also I love the show's overall feel, where it becomes serious at times, and sometimes a little bit but not too cheesy. Edit: Now that you mention it, I also love the side characters. They're all relatable, and fleshed out.

older heisei rider up to kiva used to called as "boring" because of its j-drama like structure. And people don't expect a tokusatsu show has drama like show where everything slowly moving along. From Ichigo to Black, they were all made in episodic format. But watching them continuously in one sitting or two actually works in their favor, and I must say old heisei rider is the best from all aspect compared to showa and phase 2 heisei. I hope reiwa will sometimes bring this kind of format back.

I enjoyed a good amount of Kuuga, despite it’s age and slower pacing. I like the characters and how a decent amount of change occurs throughout the series. I will say that I feel the climax was a little too brief for my taste, but I do like the epilogue despite it’s length.

I just finished watching Kuuga, and it was a blast. However, was the Grongi dialogue suppose to have subtitles because the sub-version I watched didn't have any. At times it would sound like the grongi were speaking in gibberish.

There weren't meant to be any subtitles, and they discuss key spoilers anyway. It's part of the mystery surrounding them, but later releases of the series do subtitle them. They speak in a cipher of the Japanese language, so fan communities were able to translate them when it came out anyway.

I seriously wish for a popular Tokutuber to disprove the myth that it wasn't supposed to be a KR show, plus Hibiki is honestly one of my favorite seasons (the first half and movie, anyway...) because it's seriously so unique compared to everyone else.

@Jeffery Tang To say that you hate Hibiki just for being different is quite childish, in my opinion. Yes, Hibiki and the rest of the Oni are never referred to as Kamen Rider. They do not say Henshin, they don't use Belts to transform and they only use anything reminiscent of a Rider Kick once throughout the whole show. The titular Rider is the oldest Heisei Rider being 31 years old during the show. He doesn't even know how to ride a bike in the beginning and only gets one himself until Episode 25. And counting Movies, Stageshows, SIC Hero Saga and Novels, Hibiki has the greatest number of Riders in a single series at a whopping 30 Riders. Besides, it's plot is unlike anything the franchise has done before: Hibiki is a mature and chill adult who helps Asumu, a 14 year old who has no idea what to do with his life, and the whole show builds upon the titular 3 Oni shaping their disciples and helping them mature as people. Hibiki is one of my favorites because of all this, because of the fact that it tries to distance itself from everything else and gives the finger to all established Rider traditions. It's very fun, the visuals and camerawork get to be astounding at times, and the Oni designs are badass while their motif of musical instrument weapons give for what can at best be described as an 'Artsy' season.

I find a lot of similarities between Kuuga and Twin Peaks. Both are dramatic, slow, yet warmly paced police dramas with an emphasis on the human connections between the townsfolk. Both have very sweet and touching, yet slightly quirky, human interactions. I would argue both have something close to the same message, where life can have meaning depending on the people you are with. Ichijou bares similar characteristics to both the characters Sheriff Truman and Agent Albert, who in Twin Peaks, are written as polar opposites. Ichijou is written as a cynical, tactically minded antithesis to Yusuke at the start, but still holds the heart of a small town cop like Truman. Yusuke himself is quite similar to Cooper, being a quirky optimist thrusted into a strange ongoing mystery, only difference being Yusuke's not on government payroll like Cooper. Even the tone of the Grongi scenes are ominous and nightmarish, similar to whenever Bob appears on screen. I think fans of Twin Peaks would be drawn particularly fondly to this show for something special.
