Never knew the meaning of 'fold'. Now it makes sense! My grand parents grew up on Sugden fold in Armley. It was unpaved and I always thought it resembled a farm yard, which technically it was! Many thanks for continuing education. Some of these videos are binge worthy, bravo and please keep them coming!

It should be turned into some artistic "quarter" - however I fear it will some just get to be overwhelmed by utilitarian residential tower blocks like much else in Leeds, e.g. the Italianate Towers on the western approach to Leeds station.

You are right, Stephen, I think they are worried about that threat.

My sister used to live in a flat close to this in the early 1980's I think it was called Cherry Tree Court in Lincoln Green and I walked past the pub along Mabgate many times going to and from Kirkgate Market. The green tiles on the front are so very stylish and distinctive. I never knew there was a cemetary in this area on the opposite side of the road. The photograpy really revealed how the big old roundabout area has changed leading to York Road.

A very interesting video. My dad used to work at Leeds Engraving company on Mabgate from the 1960's until the 1980's. I spotted it on the video, about half way along the street. It was a very old building with an internal courtyard. I went there a few times as a child and remember the whole street being dark, dirty and forbidding. i don't live in Leeds anymore but would love to go back and see the amazing changes which have been shown.

The section from mabgate to the aire along the culvert is one the coolest and frankly dangerous explorations Ive ever done. Great stuff man as always, the Marshalls Scotland wood mill ruins in Adel are a really interesting one if you ever looking for a topic, the foundations of dwellings, the mill itself and waterworks as well as cellars etc still exist, the old bee keeping farmer who lived above the site really brought the place to life for me when we spoke, he did tell me to watch for a huge black cat he believed lived in the cellar from time to time, shame he’s gone now as he was very knowledgable.

Thanks for this great guided tour of dear old Mabgate. It's my 'scenic route' to Aldi to try and keep away from the godawful traffic pollution on Regent Street. Mabgate is really lovely nowadays with all the street art. I love Hope House and the City of Mabgate Inn. I wish they'd put the fallen-off letters back on the Black Horse, though, LOL!

Fantastic video. I used to work at Cohen and Wilks in the late 80s. I helped to set up the warehouse when they first moved in Margate area from Water Lane Halback. . After work on Friday we get our wage and go straight to the Black Horse pub . Also my husband's great grandfather was married in St Mary's church in late 1890s . His family lived near Mushrooms Street, Cambridge Street next to the lady beck and lots of his family babies died of cholera in the 1890 to 1900. . Thank you for this video, great memories. 🏵️🌸🏵️.

Hi, my very first day at work for the GPO in 1972 I reported for duty at Hope House where the offices for the telephone installation department was. Hope Foundry was the garage and “mess” where we then met on a morning, I am sure it had both the entrance arches then - one for IN and one for OUT. The vans were parked further up on Cherry Row. I have not been up Mabgate for probably 50 yrs so your lovely film brought back memories. Thanks!

It was about 3 years ago I used to walk through there everyday to work just up the road near the old cherry tree pub. I can't believe how much it has changed watching this video, I doubt I would recognise much of it now.

Great video as it brought back many memories for me. My first job after leaving school in 1978 was at a manufacturing jewellers based in Hope House on Mabgate. Used to go to The Black Horse opposite and do the sandwich run at City Of Mabgate. Sad to see so many classic pubs in the area close and vanish for good.

I went to St Charles school opposite St Mary's church and remember it being knocked down. Someone played the organ, possibly for the last time, just before demolition began and you could hear it clearly in the school. Subsequently I have been for a pint in the City of Mabgate and the Black Horse before they closed down. Must go for another look around the area again

Wow I remember all of this as I went to St Charles school in the narrow street opposite St Mary's Church in the 60s /70s. St Mary's had Gargoiles on the sides..st charles school used to play rounders as small children in St Mary's yard As an adult I used the city of margate and black horse pubs, in 1986 watched the maradonna hand of God goal. Great video❤

4:45 Do you have a reference for parliamentary funding of church building? I've never heard of it before.
@GeogJuice
@GeogJuice Жыл бұрын
A Commissioners' church, also known as a Waterloo church and Million Act church, is an Anglican church in the United Kingdom built with money voted by Parliament as a result of the Church Building Acts of 1818 and 1824. I hope this helps. There were several Million Act churches in Leeds, many of them now lost.

@@GeogJuice Many thanks. I'll investigate this. I grew up in Leeds until age 16, then returned for most of the '70s, and have been in the leodiaspora since. Watching your vides, and putting the Google yellow man down in locations once familiar, I am astonished at the change in the city, in particular the loss of churches and pubs (they always seemed to go together - but I doubt parliament funded pubs!). As I lad my Church was St Philips in Middleton, a catholic church that had been a protestant church bought, moved stone by stone, and rebuilt. About 25 years ago I returned to find only foundations.
