Did you know that Nadiad was the head office of Kheda Satyagraha done by Gandhiji?
So let me show you a little history of Nadiad.
Generally about 762 mm in Kheda district. 1,778 mm in 1918 instead of the usual rainfall. As much as the rain fell.
Due to heavy rains, crops and cattle fodder were completely destroyed, i.e. a situation like green drought was created.
Even in such difficult times, the revenue of the government was standing.
According to government rules, land revenue was deferred in the year in which the crop fell below four annas.
Gandhiji personally visited about 50 villages to personally visit the farmers while his collaborators visited 400 villages and declared that the crop did not exceed four anis.
The Hindu Orphanage at Nadiad became the center of action for this struggle and was named 'Satyagraha Mandir'.
Gandhi took the helm of this struggle.
arranged face-to-face meetings and corresponded with Commissioner Pratt; But it had no effect.
On the other hand, the farmers also became adamant about not paying the revenue.
As per Gandhiji's order, the farmers took a pledge and took up the struggle of non-violent satyagraha.
The government launched a policy of repression; But that policy did not work in front of steadfast farmers.
The fight went on in full swing. The number of satyagrahis reached over 3,200.
The eyes of the whole country were focused on this fight.
Finally a written proposal came from the Collector of Kheda District that if the happy farmers paid the revenue then the revenue of the poor farmers would be deferred for 2 years.
Gandhiji accepted this compromise.
On June 6, Vallabhbhai Patel issued a pamphlet declaring that the struggle was over
Thus this struggle of Kheda Satyagraha was based on ideal principles of justice, self-respect and non-violence.
