You forgot one big piece of history about the construction of the New York City grid system... In the early 1800s Glasgow, Scotland was one of the earliest modern cities to design and adopt this type of street planning system, for its main city streets, including the tall buildings. A Three-Man team in the US took the design ideas from Glasgow and implemented them into the city you see today. Incidentally, Glasgow's subway/metro is the 3rd oldest in the world, ahead of New York.

I've heard that Manhattan comes from "Manahatta" which supposedly means "hilly island" or something like that.

24 dollars, still regurgitating that ingorant myth? It was 60 guilders in goods, which would translate to 3000-4000 dollars today as a rough estimate. Typically those would be useful metal goods like axe heads and pots and pans, since the natives didn't have any metal themselves. The natives were experienced and shrude traders just like the Dutch, suggesting they would be tricked with trinkets and beads is pure racism from the American narrative.

The point is that an entire island was ‘bought’ for pennies. $3000 or $24 doesn’t sound dramatically different in this context.

@@UrbanStories Yes it does. It's not like the natives were planning to build a harbour there themselves, for them it was just a small piece of land. It was a good deal for them. There is no good reason to repeat what a racist American claimed taking the exchange rate with the guilder from the 70's to depict the natives as easily fooled primitves.

@@DenUitvreterand according to the Native American museum in Manhattan, the local tribes thought it was more like rent money rather than a sale. Something got lost in translation
