No one should be in charge of another person's access to medicine that will treat his or her own pain. The Nanny laws are cruel to the poor who are in pain as they are forced to suffer or go into extreme poverty trying to access the medicines that will help them resolve their pain.

@@nevermore7285 have you ever suffered in nonstop pain for a long time? If not, let me tell you, It's horrible. I've seen it happen to two people that I knew and observed closely. one had stage 4 cancer that had metastasized to his bones causing microfractures throughout his entire body, the other had severe osteoarthritis that had progressed to debilitating levels and she was elderly. Opiates were the gentlest and most effective for both of their pain management. Opiates improved both of their functioning mobility mood and quality of life. They were a godsend. Neither of these two people or others who suffer today should have to jump through hoops to be able to manage their own pain. . lots of things can be addictive food can be addictive but we don't cut people off of food gambling shopping working you name it, someone's addicted to it.. should we control all those things as well and dole each out to those we deem deserving, bit by bit?

This is an incomplete history. Talk about Bill Clinton’s policies. Patient bill of rights. Customer service surveys for doctors. Lawsuits against physicians who didn’t treat pain aggressively. I imagine you won't see or answer this but I thought I may as well ask - firstly, great video, very informative so props for that. My question tho is did doctors really seriously believe the claim that oxycodone didn't have the same abuse/addiction potential that practically all other opiates/opioids do? Back in the 90s, did you personally believe that the extremely well documented and clear link between opiates and addiction that existed for every single opiate/opioid that had ever been discovered really didn't apply to oxycodone for some reason? Because PURDUE said so? It just seems to me that doctors are excusing themselves of any responsibilty for the opioid epidemic by claiming that they genuinely believed Purdue's marketing. Being told that there's an opioid that works on the mu-opioid receptor circuitry and is an effective painkiller but is also somehow non-addictive is like being told someone has invented cold fusion or a perpetual energy machine - an extraordinary claim which was inexplicably subjected to no skepticism? Would love to hear your take on this!

totally agree. first they created and marketed heroin as an alternative to morphine that was safer and less addictive and then they created oxycodone which they marekted as a safer and non addictive alternative to commonly prescribed opiates at the time. history repeats itself it seems. and now were seeing a reverse of the opium war where china is flooding western markets with synthetic opioids like fentanyl to weaken and profit off of the west.

You wont get a clear answer for this. Clearly not. But running a successful medical practice with steady "patients" is more difficult than you think. They went to school all those years with the illusion of getting rich. Our culture promotes the idea that a doctor should be rich. It's an egotistical self fulfilling prophecy that compounded itself.

On the other side of the coin, people legitimately need opioids. Denying anyone the access to pain relief is inhumane in a sense. Whether an old man really "needs" a powerful opioid is sometimes circumstantial and depends on the day. Maybe you can call that overprescribing but to give a person with multiple injuries ibuprofen because of the chance they will become dependent on opioids is unacceptable.

Trump started this with his declaration of an opiate epidemic, for him it was all part of his goal to decrease unemployment, along with cutting tons of social programs like meals on wheels. No one cares about addicts lives or their families suffering, at the very least people are just so disgusted by addiction that they'd rather let someone suffer than to let another person do with their body as they wish. But for most politicians it probably has to do with unemployment. FK the pain and suffering, damn pussies can deal with it and work like a real man. My 62 yr old mother is terminally ill and in lots of pain from various diseases and the last doctor at a pain clinic that prescribed them to her just got fired and the whole pain clinic no longer prescribes opiates. This is what happens when narrow minded fools are in charge, they rush in like brute beasts with their "manly"(beastly) mentality, getting people hurt and making a mess of the place.

The issue is not increased prescriptions; it’s that people suffering from some mental struggle is finding relief that no others have been able to diagnose or treat. Addiction is a symptom of mental health and declining societies, and so on.

Exactly, prescribed or not, they are being abused because of the underlying issues to substance abuse, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, ocd, etc. In my person experience, the addiction part is being the main focus, which makes sense when detoxing, but ive found that most mental health providers wont go more in depth to what actually triggers the addiction. I was addicted to pain killers for 5 years, and i got them without a script, it took me years to finally find a therapist who looked beyond just my addiction for me to finally feel im getting help. Ive been clean for 3 years now and i feel much more alive, but that gut feeling is always there when those depressive thoughts and racing mind start consuming you and the only thing your brain can assimilate with relief is drugs, this is the case for me and im sure many others. Declining societies? Opioid use has been around for thousands of years (Opium then morphine, Heroin etc.) and ‘declining societies’ isn’t the major cause, what ever it means. It’s normally trauma or some other mental illness, anxiety or (Physical or mental) pain that leads to addiction.

​@juansdn93 doctors had patients on hundreds of mgs of this crap. When I was 17 I got into a nasty car accident and Shattered my jaw and before I knew it I was on just about 200mgs of oxy and another 50 of percoset for breakthrough pain. When they finally just took it away from me a year later cuz they believed since it was prescribed by a Dr and I wasn't abusing then I wasn't addicted let's just say I went through absolute hell. This drug still releases tons of dopamine and endorphins even though you aren't using it to get high and after long term use your body isn't able to make them like they could before so when you stop the meds major depression sets in which takes years to correct itself if it ever does.

When I sold Oxycontin for Purdue Pharma between 1998-2001...we too promoted Oxycontin as a less abusable and longer acting better choice... history repeating!! After many of my docs, nurses, and pharms told me Oxycontin was way worse than Lortab, Vicodin and others...I resigned in 2001 and soon I lost my family, every penny I ever made, my marriage, everything!!! I became a disillusioned depressed alcoholic that was suffering from PTSD. That was 20 years ago..and I am still trying to get well..I can't hold a job... because of treatment resistant major depression! I have had ECT and it helps partially. I too was a casualty of Purdue Pharma!! Mark Ross.

Sorry. I'm 67 and have had much experience with drugs of abuse and I just don't see how someone could be so naive to think that anything containing oxycodone wouldn't be highly addictive. Its just as bad as the BAYER company claiming heroin is less addictive than morphine. Except by the 1990s one hundred years later its even more puzzling.

Depression and anxiety lead to opioid addiction. This is such a huge factor he is overlooking. If you're mentally healthy, you dont want to feel the emotional and physical numbness they give you. I know of many people that actually DONT like how opioids make them feel. Addiction comes from mental pain. The medical field strongly acknowledges physical pain being treated effectively with opioids but mental pain is treated with medications that are potentially harder to get off of SSRI drugs If opioids were legal like alcohol was opioids overdoses would be as much a factor as alcohol overdoses. Strength of opioid action would be controlled and youd know what you were actually getting. Imagine drinking a beer and it was as strong as everclear but you couldnt taste the difference?? No wonder people overdose!

Opioids & Opiates provide pure euphoria. Unfortunately, they also hijack the reward center in the brain, making it all you can think about. Healthcare professionals focus a lot on the physical effects of opioid withdrawal, but it’s the psychological aspect that makes it so uncomfortable. You can’t sleep, you’re in a constant state of panic (acute anxiety), you are obsessed with getting more of the drug, and everything has a terrible emotional quality to it. It’s as if all of the neurotransmitters that were being suppressed, now are suddenly flooding your brain all at once.

Opiate withdrawal is like having a moderate cold. Its unpleasant, but not this unbearable torture that excuses the antisocial behaviour like manipulation & crime that addicts engage in to avoid it. They like to exaggerate how bad it is to try to justify acting like bad people but mild to moderate cold/flu like symptoms shouldn't even excuse a day off work, let alone all the awful things addicts do every single day to get their next hit!

@@Damiensissues I don't even have to ask ! But you were never addicted to opioids for any serious amount of time. If you had been you would never come out with such a ridiculous comment. I was addicted to just over the counter codeine for ten years. I used to cold water extract it three times per day. After only six months on it I tried to quit. Let me tell you that the experience of cold turkey withdrawal was the most horrific experience I have ever gone through. And I have had tons of bad flues living in dank damp Scotland. I have suffered rheumatic fever as a child which I remember to this day as being pure hell. But my withdrawal experience ranks as the worst in my entire life. It is eqivelent to suffering a flue magnified by ten. And it is accompanied by complete insomnia lasting four days or more, plus leg thrashing which drives one mad, plus psychological terror and yearning for another hit second by second. Then comes the stomach cramps, the nauseated, swaets and if you do nod off through complete exhaustion, the horrific nightmares. And the worst thing about all this, is that it hts you all at the same bloody time. You have never been to hell like myself and thousands of others, so until you ever experience what I just described, may I concil you to keep your mouth shut.

IV heroin use was very prevalent prior to 1970s Burroughs writes about it in the 1950s, Charlie Parker.. died 1955 (rip) There are even drug psa’s from the 50s and 60s which discuss IV heroin use as “public enemy number one” Like they did with marijuana in the 1930s. (See refer madness.)

Also, it doesnt take long term use for a person to develop a physical dependence. Maybe 4 days. Maybe One use. It will happen so quickly and you won't realize it until you stop taking the meds that it's too late.

Um it depends on the person, and no it doesn't happen that quickly for ANYONE. It's a minimum of 2 weeks. It took me a couple months of DAILY heroin use without stopping before I ever experienced withdrawal symptoms. Multiple months bro. Boy oh boy did I have the chance to get the fuck out, and I didn't. Regrets. But please don't claim bogus. Cause physical dependence simply doesn't happen that quick, and one use definitely will not cause anything to happen. You realize there are natural opioids in our body? All types of endorphins are literally endogenous opiates in the body. But you thinking one use can cause withdrawal really shows how ignorant you are. You clearly haven't been around it, nor done much legitimate research...

Stop spreading lies. It takes the average person of six weeks of every day use going above their pain number to create a physical addiction there are no humans that can take opioids for four days in a row and become inducted, unless we’re talking about injecting heroin. Where do you learn this propaganda from? I personally was in the hospital for two weeks and was given Dilaudid every four hours for intestinal disease. I came out of the hospital not addictive having hundreds of milligrams of a drug that’s 10 times more powerful than heroin and there was no cravings no addiction.

Yes, that's what I heard. Try to only take it 3 times max. I've also heard that the ketamine clinics can help with chronic pain. But you have to be dosed in the clinic and under supervision. You can't take it with you. But I've heard it really does help.

I know this documentary is going to be interesting! I always wonder at the difference in addiction rates/experiences of alcohol and opioids. Honestly in the ER I saw more people addicted and destroyed by Alcohol. Addiction is very sad. I have never experienced any kind of euphoria when taking prescribed pain medication. I am really wondering why. Is it a genetic block? I also strongly dislike Alcohol and don't drink. I hated smoking, too. What makes it so? Am I just lucky? I do have chronic pain. I believe Opioids can be used for chronic pain safely, but cautiously! opioids should not be used to completely relieve chronic pain, that is my opinion. but carefully to alleviate enough of the pain for functional life to be achieved.

Yah we’ll take it from me…. Opioids make life 100x worse than it is organically. Have you ever tried kicking heroin and/or fentanyl? If not, you’re fortunate. Very fortunate. My life is being ruined as I type this due to fentanyl and I’m only 20. I’ve been using opioids since 13 and fentanyl IV since 16. Take it from me.

Sorry for people that got lied to but opiates are awesome, people just have no moderation, so they should stay illegal and prescription only, but they do work better than any pain killer for many people and many types of pains and they are a really awesome recreational drug. Well... most of them.. Fully synthetic opiates like Fentanyl suck so much, but semi-synthetics like oxycodone, hydrocodone, coedine, ect are pretty great.
