As a PS1 game collector who grew up in the UK and has now been living in Japan for over a decade, I find it interesting how US PS1 cases are so different to the cases for Europe and Japan. I don't think there were any longboxes in Europe and Japan and only US cases have that ridged look down the side. Even for single disc games, the square cases in Europe are all much chunkier- about the width of 2 CD jewel cases (with double layered cases for 3 and 4 disc games). Japan has a mixture of chunky square cases and thin jewel cases. Also imo the silver band on the cases for platinum games in Europe is much better looking than the vivid green of US greatest hits.

For PS4, there is also another variation of the 2-disc case where there is a disc spot on each side of the open case. The only example of this I have is Stardew Valley. Those PS1 cases took me back to my mid 20s. Newly married, and my first shot at playing a console over my PC at that time, and being able to rent the games from the local video store. Civic Video Mount Pritchard NSW for me :). Good times. Interestingly the standard jewel cases you're showing look different to the ones I got here in Australia, PAL EU versions. The hinge didn't have the black 'textured' look, and was more the frosted, or clear, plastic pretty much the same as the jewel cases as music CDs. Sometime when the PS1 jewel case broke, usually at the hinge or the prongs holding the disc in snapped, I just bought an empty jewel case and popped it all in there. Wish I kept them now, but hey 25 year old me didn't think about 2023 or retro gaming collecting at the time.

From what I can tell, there are actually 4 different, standard, NTSC PS2 cases (excluding double disc cases). You only mentioned the second and fourth versions. The third version is very similar to the fourth, but the size of the PlayStation logo and the disc spindle are different. As for the first, I haven't been able to find a ton of information on them (my research actually brought me to your video). From what I can tell, the launch games came in generic DVD cases, without any PlayStation branding. They were still that exclusive shade of blackish-blue like all PS2 cases, but the disc sat in the middle, in a different style spindle, and there was no memory card holder. I've found no information as to when they stopped using them, but the consensus is that they were used for a few months (likely just for games released in 2000).

PS2/Gamecube/Early PS3 era were ELITE. The Games came COMPLETE on disc in a hardy, and quality case. Manuals were incredibly detailed, and informative with little goodies to read and look at. Box art was more original, and higher quality. This was the era where gaming was for gamers. We didn't know it at the time but we were in the end of the golden years of gaming. The internet was coming to corrupt everything in gaming. They weren't rushing incomplete titles, and controlled by shareholders. They weren't intentionally leaving out content to sell it to you later for more money. There were no updates, no spoilers online. People were just indulging their imaginations into these created worlds and sharing it locally with their friends, family, and themselves. I went into Zelda Windwaker only seeing the cover art, and magazine previews. I was so immersed in the world. Offline, yet connected more intimately with ourselves, and the game. Games were just better. We weren't looking for high framerates, high definition, or huge open worlds. We Wanted to just have fun when we played those games. Developers stuck to their guns more rather than chasing trends like they do today. Don't get me wrong, there are brilliant games released all the time nowadays, the indie scene especially is keeping that originality alive. But games nowadays just seem to be mainly focused on what sells, and how many of them can we sell as opposed to making a good game, and letting the game sell itself. The buying experience sucks nowadays too with Companies cheaping out on anything, and everything imaginable to cut costs like these Cheap Recycled PS4 cases for PS5 where you just hold this flimsy featherweight case with only a disc inside with only 40% of the actual game on said disc. PS2, and early PS3 games had some weight to them..A Feeling that to this day get's me excited finding a PS2 game and feeling the weight of the manual I'll get to read before diving into another universe. Knowing I won't need a 128 Gigabyte Update just to make it playable. It's sad seeing the move to Digital...Digital to me is a rental. You only "own" the game until it's no longer supported. Companies make more money off of you when you go digital. They charge you the same but in reality you just have a long term rental. You can't share your game, keep your game, resell your game, eventually you can't re-dowload, and you'll have to buy it again digitally on whatever. It's amazing to me how many people are willing to pay $60+ for a game you'll never own. I own a PC, and love Steam Sales but I can justify spending $2-$20 on an experience.

PS1 had another case type in the NTSC-U region not mentioned. These were the standard slim jewel case size, but they held 2 discs. The disc tray was hinged on the right corners and was able to flip over in that direction. The second disc was held on to the back side of it. Games like Dracula: The Resurrection, Dracula: The Last Sanctuary, Dino Crisis with the Resident Evil 3 demo and Resident Evil 3 with the Dino Crisis demo are examples.

Hey Mystic! Love your detailed look at the PlayStation game boxes! Quick question re PAL/UK/Europe PS1. Did they release the long box versions there too? I had a PlayStation from 1998 and the only case I remember is the thick jewel ones you got here to fit the manual that had all the European languages in it. Thanks again!
